Rattle happens, quit bitching, buy the least expensive B&M you can find... If you CARE about the rattle, you DONT *need* the shifter...
... that'll be all, thankyouverymuch

the shifters dont rattle...there is a noticable difference in cockpit sound though. you CAN hear your gears meshing. this is because the b&m shifter is of solid construction while the stock shifter has a rubber bushing in there that deadens the noise. I wouldn't be too concerned about the noise though, the gains outweigh the losses by far. Just get the cheapest one available...its most likely a new/non rattling one.

....YES, the B&M does rattle.. and HORRIBLY. What people complain about is not the sound of hearing the gears, its hearing the shitty construction.. two parts to teh knob that rattle:

- there is an insert that is secured on there with 2 o-rings and an e-clip, remove that thing. the shift boot secures onto that, get rid of it.

- the shift knob, some knobs rattle. find a knob that doesnt.

my combination? I removed the insert and now use the standard black nismo shift knob, its perfect -- NO rattle. I must admit, it rattled more with the KA than it did with the SR.. but i eliminated the rattle with both motors, so.

With my OBX shifter, it rattles at high RPM with my Nismo GT knob (not weighted), but doesn't rattle at all with the weighted stock knob. I think having a nice heavy knob will eliminate a lot of the rattle, and make shifting smoother.

I don't know about you, but I would hardly call a little rattle justification to use the phrase "shitty construction" The b&m is the third shifter I have owned...Solid feel, billet construction...NO MISSED SHIFTS...case closed.

By one, get over the noise and enjoy the feel.

any company that tells me the rattle is NORMAL needs to have their head examined.

it was SO fucking loud, SO loud that i couldnt hear my motor.. it was quite distracting. When i called them to ask advice, they told me thats the design of the shifter. I asked them if ANYONE has ever resolved it, they told me that one customer said he wrapped electrical tape around his shifter.

REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALY! Fucking idiots. I am not going to wrap electrical tape around my shifter, I'll wrap it around that guys fucking face.

Anyway, after a bit of grief I tore the shifter apart and figured out....

a) it was their crap shift knob
b) it was their crap insert that secures to teh shift boot.

the actual shifter itself is a quality piece, it had better be for the price i paid for the fucker. BUT, it seems that they were just a bit too rushed to release a product -- and in my opinion, that is what makes a product inferior. When you dont spend the time to actually put it on the car and drive it, test it, it shows that the company just isnt fully there. I have the B&M on my car, i like it, but it shouldnt have to take so much headache just to get something to work right.

If you think its ACCEPTABLE to live with the rattle, then thats YOU. Me? I test shit before I decide to use it. I was ready to throw it in the trash until I figured out the problem.

Like i said, YOU chose what is good and what is bad.

old_S13 = :blah:

Just hav'n a good time with ya man, I respect what ya got to say...

Right on, mine does not have too bad of a noise...I little gear mesh, but I assume that is a result of the solid construction...I agree, maybe they should have tested it for a "comfort factor"...but you said it, its mechanically awesome.

But I do disagree with calling it inferior. That implies there is something better to be purchased...Can you name a superior shifter on the market beyond "old_S13's, yet to be constructed, perfect Short Shifter for the 240sx"?

there is no doubt in my mind that the B&M short shifter is the better quality shifter on the market! I have a B&M shifter in my s13 and if i ever need another short shifter for any vehicle whatsoever, its gonna be a B&M, no questions asked!

By the way, a little tip for shift knob rattle. If it's one where it unscrews into two pieces and has a rubber insert that adapts it to different shifters, open it up and put a drop of white glue in it. The glue dampens the vibration and eliminates the rattle.
