unfortunitly im not talking about any driving tactics here, im asking about this "shift lock" mechicnism found in my friends 95 s14 auto... where you have to push teh gear shift forward in order to unlock the key in the ignition. I never seen it before, was it only on this year model? I know the manual trannys have buttons on the ignition that u press to release the key.
Is there any way to get rid of this feature? Being that its on a auto, we are planing to swap this to 5speed, and i dont recall seeing too much regarding this. I know the auto s13s didnt have this feature, so 5speed swap on those was pretty easy.

They are required on cars that have the newer SRS standards. forgot what year this feature was mandated.
Pull the trim from around the shifter. You should see the linkage below the display. On the bottom plate there are a bunch of wires going to solinoids and switches. The ones near the front are for "P" there is a gear lock solinoid and a switch. When you hit the switch it should click the key lock. when you turn the key you will see the shift lock go in and out. I'll go in to more detail later, sleep time.

On S14s, it's cable operated from the solenoid. Take the column cover off and you'll see it, just remove the cable from the car.

Hmm... i had an 1995 s14 auto and i never had to do anything special to remove the key, just put it in park and pull the key out. Now its swapped to 5 speed and there are no problems.

It was just a matter of putting the tranny into park all the way, I've driven that same 240, from the lot where he purchased the car, as well as owning one myself a few years back. . . . I had no mechanism situation, once I didn't throw the shiftknob into park all the way, inna hurry, and couldn't take the key out, killed the ignition, but couldn't grab the key, until I realized that small fallacy.

No, they also have to be in Park before you can take the key out. It's called the neutral safety switch.

it took me a minute (it was dark when i did it) but if your auto wont come out of park and you have checked all your fuses i can explain easily for you. I searched and searched on this forum and only got confusion.
Take the plate off the shifter that has PRND32 on it and directly below that is the little solenoid connected to a piece of plastic. Force the piece forward and you should be able to move the shifter with the shift button depressed (not the brake) move it into neutral and start it. I just broke it off since i dont care about and plan on doing a manual swap anyway.
Very simple. People on this site sometimes try to make themselves sound smarter by giving tons of information that is not important to the question. I would take a picture for you if you need.
