View Full Version : Strange Kouki S14 window problem

I recently picked up an S14 that needs restoration.

The other day I rolled the window down using the driver side switch, and then it wouldn't roll back up.

I took the passenger side door apart. I noticed there were speaker wires running from the driver side window switch to the passenger side window switch... I think that's how this car was wired up to have the window roll down on the passenger side.

I disconnected those wires and the window would not roll up or down.

I thought maybe the motor was dead or the regulator was stuck so I swapped the window motor and regulator, and the window switch on the passenger side.

It does not work unless you de-pin the harness and switch the up and down wires.

I've tried my main s14 window switches interchangeably and there is no change.

Has anyone experienced anything weird like this?

Funny, when restoring my s14, i came across a problem that was super similar... rebuilt the doors was messing with the seals, trim and glass fitment and all of a sudden the window stopped working...no up or down, tried both side switches, nothing... swore the motor went bad and just my luck. Nope.... ended up being the relay for power windows actn up... it would stick and un stick at will seemed like unplugging the window switch would "reset" it and would work again till it wouldnt.... replaced the relay and no problem again.

You have a Kouki, right?

I found the fuse in the engine bay, where is the relay?

Mine was located in the enginebay fuse box.

I unplugged it, and plugged it back in..worked then same shit, i replaced it no problem

Granted i dont have a fusebox cover and know e actly which one but it solved my problem

usually when this happens to an S14 its the window switch, the plastic box that screws to the back of the door handle with 4 screws. The thing with the buttons on it. When mine does this I just smack it and it works again.
There is a well known issue with it getting stuck "down" and melting / creating a fire.

To avoid the issue, never put the window all the way down.
Although I thought this was a zenki only issue. I've not heard of it happening to 97+

I see a fuse, but not a relay...

On the late model s14, the power for the windows goes through 25A fuse -> a circuit breaker somewhere -> power window relay -> power window amp -> drivers switch -> passenger switch. The switches are grounded to chassis. So it sounds like someone might have replaced the wiring with the speaker wires, and jumped the ground to the drivers side switch.

The relay itself is powered by a Ignition Relay #1 -> 7.5A fuse ->window relay coil

Page 9 for start of diagram, Page 211 for the relay and circuit breaker locations, and Page 155 for power window diagrams and troubleshooting (https://www.nicoclub.com/service-manual?fsm=240sx/1997/el.pdf)

Heres the location of the window amplifier for both windows (Marked as 'B'):

Here's the location of the relay and circuit breaker from the FSM:

I'd recommend busting out the power probe.

not sure if your issue is similar to mine but newer 240's have the relays built into the actual switch.

the diagram someone posted in this thread the relays or "amp" as it's referred to does not exist in later models. You can take your door panel off to see if it's there. The wiring is stupid and runs under the dashboard through both of the doors and hits a fuse in the engine bay fusebox as mentioned. The fuse is normally never the culprit.
