View Full Version : i never thought the day would ever come, for the suspension revamp :D

yeah so i'm kind of a whore and got kind of excited about getting some new pieces for the car and wanted to share.

first off, SERIOUS props to SPLparts for ultra quick delivery and for offering such a reasonably priced coilover to the 240 market. you guys rock!

the list of shitty parts is as follows:

-kts coilovers
-kazama tension rods
-nismo powerbrace
-energy suspension steering rack bushings
-jic inner tie rods
-kazama outter tie rods
-nismo 60mm studs front/rear
-kyo-ei plate spacers for the roller flushness

everythings installed but the kazama outter tie rods and es steering rack bushings. i guess its the same as most of you guys setups, bumpy multilink ride, but goddamnit mine has some WICKED bumpsteer. i really hope the height adjustment on the kazama's can fix that, QUICKLY. the spacers cleanup the sunkness of the 5zigens nicely imo. right now i'm running 2 8mm plate spacers on each front wheel so my setup is respectably 17x9 -1 offset up front, which isn't too bad. i have it setup at -3.5 camber, 8 caster, 0 toe.

i was looking forward to having this all on by the last event of the year and i did minus the couple parts. and i was most dissapointed to find that it was rained on that day pretty heavily. woooooooo-eeee 20-30mph rain drifting, makes you feel like a real dumbass. so i left really early. hopefully i can get good DRY track feedback by next years events.

here's the cheese:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/nismo60s.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/kts.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/kazama4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/kazamatierods2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/jic3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/kidnrg/tooooo%20stock/jic4.jpg

i must say the extension on the jic inner tie rods saved my ass in many situations at the events, i've found the angle of drift is greatly improved while parking is so goddamn easy its crazy. i wanna go for the full monty when battle version releases their s14 tie rod spacers and run them with the jic's for some crazy angle.

oh well, thats my story, i'm happy with the setup. hope you enjoyed the pointless read

oh yeah, i also put on an s14 vlsd and what a piece of shit it is :goyou:
ummm, ATS PLEASE?!

Is this your daily? Not bad, I have a very similar set up. Are your JIC inner tie rods the same length as stock? I installed my URAS tie rods over the weekend and it was about 3/4" longer than the stock and Tein inner rods. Nothing alittle cutting down won't fix, but just wondering if anyone else ran into this?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/driftintoacurb/Image003.jpg

By the way, I haven't had too much of a bumpsteer problem, only on crappy canyon roads in santa barbara. Maybe you need another alignment?

The one J5 showed me, didn't look much longer than stock. But damn, yours look like it came off of a truck or something.

I've had a few people interested in 160-170 shipped, but they've flaked. Somewhere around there though... PM me if you're interested.

Have you test fit the rack bushings yet? I tried mine on a rack and the odd-shaped one is too tight and the round one is too big. Needs some trimming... :-/

holy crap nooooooooooooooooooo! your inner tie rods are longer because it gives you more steering angle!!!!! Uras must give you CCCRRRAAAZZZYYY angle if they're that long, man i wish i woulda held out for them. but yeah my JIC's are longer than stock due to the built-in spacer system where it ties into the steering rack, just like yours have.

Ritz, get those jics dude :D you'll LOVE them!

yeah, this is my daily driver. i get off on having a pogostick looking suspension everyday, never tired of it, never annoyed with it. i kept thinking to myself what if i held out for the Tanabe pro DD's if they would've been better 10/8 rates are simply HOT.

studs? errrr, i think like 120ish front/rear at my local nissan dealer, still need to buy some plate spacers for the rear. i think 25mm should do the trick :D 17x9 -1 17x10 +0 muwahahha.

i haven't test fitted the rack bushings. at the moment of reckoning, i'll bust out the almighty dremmel and give it the pimp hand.

does anyone know where to get nismo flca's with the rigid bushing? i'm told that this "rigid" bushing is really a pillowball. i thought long and hard and tried to afford the spl flca's but i don't even think i'm worthy of those things. so if there's any leads on nismo flca's lemmeknowplzkthnx :blah:

in certian cars 0 toe can cause a steering response problem very similar to bumpsteer

sykikchimp
11-18-2004, 08:35 AM
not the 240.

If anything.. with a lot of caster and camber, it will exagerate small alignment inconsistensies.

The adjustable tie rod ends will help though.

Nismo flcas are just a rigid bushing, no pillowball. It is possible to get flcas with pillowball inserts though. Section also makes them with the bushing end cut off and a pillowball end welded on.
You can usually find them on YahooJP.

I installed TEIN tie rods, and they were MUCH longer than stock. But there was enough threads to just adjust them to length.

We counted the threads on the old ones, set the new ones to the same thread count. BOY! You should have SEEEN the toe-out! Talk about snow plow! :D

But, we just screwed them in and they worked fine.

he's probably waiting to space out the rear before posting pics. 17x10 +25 isn't very flush with pulled fenders.

those coilovers are only 8/6, right? i should make fun of you for getting a street setup, but it is your daily driver and i have the same rates. anyways, those parts are hot. i wish i had stuff like that for my car(s)

where'd you buy the kazama tie rod ends?

everywhere i looked has them out of stock and being ordered in for december/january.

BIG UPS TO THESE GUYS!

i ordered my tension rods and tie rods together 3 weeks ago on a wednesday. was later told tie rods were out of stock, no biggy. but tension rods still made it to my house by friday :D the tie rods were shipped straight from good ol yappy pan to my doorstep. took 2-3 weeks give/take.

it came from Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama haha.

yeah seriously matt 8/6 is weak. i tensioned them a good amount to kinda stiffen them up, nothing like 3wheel motion haha.

Salty, we seriously need to get a shitload of those flca's and sell them here, i would seriously be down for them if i had the $$$.

will post pics as soon as rear plate spacers are on and its dropped more, still gotta relocate the stupid harness before i do that :\

The actual tie rod is almost an inch longer. The steering angle is dependent on that spacer. But for some reason, my tie rod is so long that I have full toe in and can't adjust to zero out (on the tie rod end side). I suppose I could compensate by less caster settings (only at 7 degrees right now), but I don't think it will effect it that much.

Johny5
11-18-2004, 07:10 PM
more caster increases toe in. less caster decreases turn-in response. both situations suck :\ the spacer and the length of the rod can determine steering angle iirc. either/or, i'm jealous of the uras rods!!!

Werd. I'll actually have a set of Nismo flcas for sale soon, but they're for S13. I found a set on YJ with pillowball inserts and roll center adjusters and couldn't resist, so those will be going on...
I'm kind of preparing for a front suspension revamp/upgrade also. :)

I got them from Autobacs Japan. They fit s13/s14/s15 I believe, but the s13 outter tie rods use a different thread pitch. I was selling these, but didn't get my asking, so they're going on my car.

after today if i can make it to the alignment shop then the tie rod ends and rack bushings and blah blah blah should be on. hey guys, can i install the steering rack bushings without losing alignment settings? i mean, i don't want them to be off even a little. oh well, i'll figure it out. also gotta slam it more before the last alignment and move that damn harness.

hey salty take some pics man. i gotta friend in cali that builds suspension for rail/funny/alcohol cars etc. that uses extremely hardcore spherical bushings. i mean basically he builds shit to hold 1000+ hp. so he says he can get very functional shit and he can weld. may be worth a venture? iunno. but front end suspension revamp is where its at :D i just dunno the roll center adjusters. confuses the hell out of me.

They're basically just longer balljoints designed to bring the lca back to stock position when the car is lowered a lot.

Here's some crappy auction pics... They're a little dirty w/ some surface rust, but clean up nice. :ughd:

oh damn, i've seen those before. i kept thinking to myself its as easy as removing the bushing and hydraulicaly pressing the new spherical unit in :\ but i guess its not, you mentioned something about they welded them in?

Salty_X
11-20-2004, 11:55 AM
Those ones get pressed in just like a bushing as far as I can tell. The welded ones are different, trust me you'll know when you see them, they basically look like someone cut the bushing end off a stock lca and welded a pillowball tc rod to it. Hybrid styles.

Johny5
11-20-2004, 08:07 PM
well dude c'mon quit holdin out. when you get the unit please give measurement specs :)

i'd love to put a spherical in place of cheeseball rubber bushings where the flca connects to the suby.

Salty_X
11-20-2004, 08:42 PM
I've already got them... what do you want me to measure?

Johny5
11-20-2004, 09:31 PM
the size of the bushing and its lengh and the size of the outter circular part holding it in. i guess there's no way to get its static rating so i'll probably just buy a really stiff one to have it pressed in.

Salty_X

I'm no mathemagician, but I'll try to get some decent measurements tomorrow.

Until then, how bout some YahooJP hotness?

He also took a picture of the box they come in, but no picture of them unwrapped... gee, thanks guy.
If you look at the one on the right, you can make it out though, it's the hybrid style I mentioned earlier. It's turned on its side, and at the very bottom is the pillowball end w/ rubber cover.

oooooooooh my god those ikeya's are HOT :O i had a chance to get spl flca's at a mega huge discount new but had to turn it down. no fancy pants flca's for my wallet :( so this spherical bushing insert is my last and only idea.
