whats up everybody, so I have a question since I’m changing the VTC gear on my car. Before swapping it , I marked the chain with a sharpie that lines up with the dot on the vtc ( marked with green arrow ) but when I swapped the new VTC gear and lined it up with the dot, it doesn’t go on the cam correct to bolt up. It only fits if it’s on the tooth next to the dot, if I move it over. But I discovered that the old VTC the dots on the green arrows are apart by 15 teeth’s but the new VTC is apart by only 14. Sooo it fits the new VTC if it’s on the 15th tooth like the old VTC but not on the 14th tooth that lines up with the mark. Sooo my question is, do you think I can install it on the 15th tooth of the new VTC but it doesn’t line up with the dot ? But it’s still a 15 count from the green arrow marks like the old VTC ? Sorrry it’s confusing 😂Hopefully someone can help me out, thanks in advance !

This would be much easier if you had set cylinder 1 to TDC (of compression stroke) and used the gear timing marks like just about every other timing writeup in existence (dots at roughly the 10 & 2 positions). But here we are.

In a nutshell, that oil drain hole should NOT be used to align timing. Use the dot on the gear itself, the tooth you have numbered as #1 in your pictures. Count the number of teeth from that spot to avoid your timing being off.

Agreed. Put the motor at TDC and align the cams per FSM. That’s the easiest and safest bet. Remember, these are zero clearance motors. If anything is off, you’re putting recesses in your pistons.

Yeah, as stated above that "dot" is the oil drain hole and not the timing mark. The timing mark is the dot on the actual "gear" that you have numbered "1". You want 20 chain pins between the cam gear dots (I prefer counting the pins not the links as there can be half-links etc.)
Also, do not crank your engine over with incorrect cam timing, you WILL bend the valves. Best to remove both cams, put Cylinder #1 at TDC, and reinstall the cams properly as per the FSM and numerous photos online that show the proper timing.
