View Full Version : 1jzgte vs Rb25det neo... Help!

So I'm in the process of planning a swap for a z32.
I already know all the suspension and interior bits I want but am still undecided on the engine. I'm not a fan of the vg, as its heavy, messy, and a pain to work on... to boot it makes zero power lol.

I've narrowed it down to an rb25det neo and a 1jzgte vvti. I plan on going with a moderately sized top mount turbo on both, and my power goal is 450-550 at the wheels. The car is going to be primarily a street car but will occasionally see some drift events

I've done a very, very rough estimate of 4500 for the rb and parts for the swap and the same rough estimate for a jz is about 4800. Since the price and stock hp are about the same, I am sort of torn on what to do.

from what I've read, neo rb25's are the best rb25, with the vvl, rb26 rods, and solid lifters, and jz's, well, everyone knows about jz's lol.

Has anyone had experience with both engines(or either or) and can give insight into which would be the best bet for my particular swap?

Going large topmount = 1JZ. Exhaust will be on the passenger side, you have all the space in the world without having to worry about your mastercylinders.

i too have heard 1j is better...but 2j...theres some power!

The Toyota 2/1J series of engines are superior to the RB in (literally) every single aspect, and still weighs less to boot and is a shorter overall engine.

Everyone is keen to jump on the bandwagon and you should to! More RB's for me.

All jokes aside, both engines are great and perform awesome in stock to mild form. The JZ is easier to source parts for and can handle more stock. I went RB 10 years ago and wouldn't change it if I could.

Part of me loves the RB and the other part didnt want to swap a Toyota into a Nissan.

If you take a look at lets say Formula Drift... majority of the guys are running v8's and 2jz's
I really haven't seen many RBs being run in FD. Maybe there is a reason why... I believe oil starvation in RBs are a common issue on RB25s when at high rpms, but I am being bias. I run a 1jz vvti in mine and I'm glad I did. Parts are easy to source out in the states.
