It's not hard to do. Just tricky. All you have to do is grab the front of the filter, and use your index finger to find the stud comming off the block, and guide it into the hole in the filter. It used to take 5 minutes or more (first few times). Now I can walk up to my buddies car, take the filter from his frustrated hands, and screw it on in 15 seconds.
Or buy a oil filter relocator, because making one is stupid. It's like re-routing your arteries yourself. Sure, you can probably do it. But a slight mistake and something's dieing.

Not to Hijack, but the topic line sounds like my Every-Other-Oil-Change mantra.
It's not re-attaching the filter. It's taking it off. Is it even possible to prevent oil from going EVERYWHERE?

just dont tighten it that tight anymore, and make sure you coat the oring with oil before you install it. There are tools you can buy at discount etc to get it off.

I dont think he was talking about the difficulty of taking the oil filter off itself.. He was talking about removing the filter during a change and not getting oil all over your engine bay during that process.. yea.. it sucks.. but what i found to work real well is.. get a ziplock bag or a small handy towel.. and slide it underneath when u remove it.. and u can save yourself a messy job to clean up..

I'm not sure about the SR but I know for miatas they have filter relocation\oil cooler kits to make it easier to get to the filter. I'm sure there is something for the SR also.

Hmm.. i dont agree with your last statement.. but the wrench is my best friend man.. i  to it.. did you make sure you got the right size so its snug on that filter.. and it should slip right into your engine down to your filter.. it really saved me from doing a 1 hr oil change job.. into a 5 min oil change job..
Good luck man..

I am running this same kit on my car - easy install, no problems. It also makes ita a lot easier to add a pressure gauge.

take a screwdriver and stabe it through the filter, and just twist. Or go to the gym and work out some.
building your own oilfilter relocation kit is not smart, unless you have connections, and machining ability. even then it will take you hours/ days to do. just order one from takamotorsports.com, that's what i did. Cant speak of the product yet as I have not recieved it yet, just orderd. But I have heard many good things about them.

Well if he cant get it off anyother way, then he has no choice. it will make a mess no matter what. Its an sr, just stick some cardboard underneath the entire car. I had to use this technique to get teh oilfilter off when I first got my sr, the filter must have been on the motor for a long time, while it sat in the yard, then on the boat coming over here, then in the whearhouse from where i picked it up. It was stuck on bad. I took wrenches, didnt work, they just rounded the top of the filter, i didnt have the wrench that is the rubber one, only the ones that go on the end. So I took the screwdriver, and took it right off.

I've used the screw driver technique several times - yes it's messy but it does work.

Has anybody here know of a oil filter socket???!! It goes on the end of the filter (thats what the grooves on the end of the filter are for) and you put a short 3/8" extension on it and turn that sucker off. Oil filter wrenches are hard to navigate since the alternator is in the way.

yeah, I used to have an oil filter socket for a 3/8 drive and it would crush/strip the end of every single filter I used it on any time it required a decent amount of torque to remove. Surprisingly, the most effective tool I have ever come across for taking oil filters off and doing a million other things is the Craftsmen strap wrench; it was eight bucks and it payed for itself the first time I used it.
:bowrofl: Full unlimited warantee on Craftsman tools

oil filter socket is the tool for the job, like others said, spread oil on the o-ring gasket, and do not put it on with that much force. its not a freakin lug nut on a wheel or something..

GOD DAMNIT READ I DID NOT PUT THIS OIL FILTER ON I HAVE HAD THE SR FOR ABOUT 3,000 MILES... i know how to put an oil filter on

Take a screwdriver and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain first, then you just have a small stream that you can easily catch. Then stab the side with the screwdriver and unscrew it that way. Since you drained most of the oil, hardly any will spill out and its easy to clean up. I did it this way first time I changed the oil on my sr, only took me about 20 min and hardly spilled anything.

Maybe you shouldnt do anymore of your own work on the car. Just take it to an oil change place and make it their problem. All your posts are just cry baby comments about how bad your sr is. I love mine even with its quirks.

when i got my SR the filter on it from japan was on there tight as can be, so i shelled out $4 for a filter socket and it came right off. and most oil cooler kits you buy, like the hks and blitz come with filter relocation jobbers

there something like a oilfilter piler style or channel lock, not on of those slip over and then turn wrench, the piler one does crush your filter and then twist, at a gas station i know uses them, oil filter off fast.
oil filter relocation kit.. use a greddy

Ah, just save your self the headache and go to one of those quick lube places for a $15 oil change.. just let them know to hand-tighten that thing and not use a wrench. Change the oil and filter out after 1000 miles for some good shiet.

SR's are not the best engine ever made...believe it or not. I want something that is easy to work on and i can kind parts for... where i live, i now find out that it is VERY difficult to find ANY parts for an SR.. the engine wasnt designed to be easy to work on AT ALL.. that is called POOR DESINGING which tells me maybe its the same on the inside... i have lost faith in the SR. its not what its cracked up to be. so for all of you the luve your SR good have fun cuz 1 more will be up for sale soon

I guess those Jap engineers just didn't understand that we Americans must use big tools and brute force on our engines. :rl:

They designed the engine for power, not so your weak ass can take the filter off.
Why don't you make it easy on yourself and check out:

For the best oil relocation kits and coolers...
Nuff said.
I hate how messy the engine bay gets when I remove the oil filter.
I wanna relocate the filter next to the oil pan. Like on the 4G63 Evo8 engine.
