Is it ok for my SR to backfire? I only had my S15 SR for 2 week now and its starting to backfire once in a while. my BOV is not vented and it happens when I change gears like from 2nd to 3rd and not going too fast. Should I be worried? or is it normal? thanks for you help :)
Do you have a cat?
if not, it's just running a tad rich and it's normal.

Yes I have a cat. Its a 3" cat that I got from another nissan. I'm not sure which though...

Like everyone else has said, it's normal.
However, take care to monitor it. If it gets worse, your timing might be slightly off, or you might be running excessively rich. If it gets worse, check your timing and check your fuel pressure :)
Congrats on the s15 install!

ka to backfire and flames = 2.5" exhaust, no cat, no muffler. trust me on that one. that was my first ever track s13, 14.8 @ 92 mph with minor bolt ons. (i, h, e, radiator, s-afc) also had the s-afc richened a tad bit just for safety reasons since my timing was advanced about 4 degrees, leaned it out at the track.

depends on the definition of backfire. If it's a LOUD boom with flames, that's not normal. If it's just a little POP sound with some flames, that's fine.

yes Its a small poping sound that happens when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd or let the gas go off at 6th gear quickly. But it does not happen all the time. I do not know about the flames (since I can not see the back while driving) but I will continue to listen to it. Thanks :)

trust me, you have flames, you just cant see them. im not saying you are towering flames, you can barely see them, but they are there. my car does it, i like it =)

my KA would pop when shifting extremely quickly at redline into the next gear, as soon as i would slam into the next gear you'de hear "POOOOM!" and a big blast of smoke would flow out of the exhaust. I had 2.5" exhaust with straight pipe back then. On occasion, I would throw fireballs in the canyon while sliding the car but that would ONLY happen when i would play with the throttle during slides, like.. constant on-of-on-off threatment. I mean, i can cant only a handfull of times when I actually saw the canyon light up from the exhaust -- but numerous times when i'de pop and smoke would blow out.
as for the SR, it pops a lot but I dont have any fire.. i run a cat nowadays.. 3" high flow. regardless, if you throw a fireball.. trust me, you'll know it. not only does it sound like a gunshot, you will light up the canyon for that quick second....

My MAP sensor is shot. I have a header, test pipe, catback. I let off the gas and it's flame city.

it would be cool to have an s15 motor with a 6 speed in my car

well wut does it mean if u hear a big KABOOM?? this only happens when im not on the gas and jus coasting in gear. it doesnt happen often but i does happen. usually when im cruzing in a low rpm. usually happens in 2nd in a parking lot when im at a low PRM

My redtop has also been suffering from the shotgun backfire and the little pops.
After your wacking on it in 3rd, till 6 grand or so, and let off the throttle, out comes the shotgun backfire and and the big ass smoke cloud.
I've noticed that the A/F gauge has been reading rich for about 3 seconds after i'm totally off the throttle, which explains the backfire; but whats causing it?
It also really loads up after sitting at a stop, then runs like shit trying to pull out, until it flushes the excess fuel.
I've checked the timing, the TPS, the MAF, Plugs, new O2, and resetting the ECU as we speak.
All that backfire shit really pisses me off, and i'm just about ready to buy the NISMO adj. FPR, to take some fuel out!
What do you guys think?

i was searching for back fire, high flow cat, and exhaust flanges.
I can post where ever i damn want to unless an admin tells me otherwise.

+1. (End the bitchery).
Quick reminder: Not everyone on this forum registered 3-5 years ago. I've never seen this thread before, but it was an interesting read, who cares if it's old? The information is still valid...

im gonna post here too just to be kool!
dude my car backfires like crazy too. i have a lot of problems though leak on the turbo manifold since studs are broken. i need a new iacv. my sr struggles to stay alive idling really low at 500 rpms and runs rich. backfires on gear changes and when i let off the gas.
sorry for updating it again! searching is the shit!
it's not backfire. it's called Afterfire. it's when the engine is missing air and it shoots out rich carbs from the exhaust. which creates a pop/flames/fire from the tip of the exhaust.
my car does this because of vented bov. this is normal.
wow old thread. atleast he searched. alot better than a new thread about this crap.

the mech said i need an new idle air control valve. or do you think its cause of the leak? what about my problem running rich? i can smell the fumes bad. you think its excessively running rich?

I cant believe you guys bash someone for asking a question in an old thread..you would be the same to bash him and say search just to effect your post count..sometimes this board is fuckin ghey as shit...
anyway..yes some backfire is Normal on SR's especially with wide open 80mm exhausts..I get it all the time...some things to look at..If you ar running a BOV and to teh Atmospere this is the immediate reason for your richness and backfire during shifts..and after a hard load and off the throttle to idle...the SAFC II can correct this problem or RECIRC the valve...
If it is running rich as sh1t and you can smell it and you have no aftermarket fuel mods like Fuel Pump, FPR and SAFC, then it could be your IACV as yur mech said, it could also be a bad O2 Sensor...you need (like me I have issues now) a Wide band and Tune to get you in the box..then you will still have backfire, but at least you will have the peace of mind that it is not correctable,,

rossfashow no problem man, glad i could help. Man sometimes people get so bored on the forums and they start bashing on people for little things. Im going to get my friends high flow cat and install my safc II and check my recirc on my bov and hopefully it will stop, although its funny to see people reaction behind me when a little fire comes out of my exhaust.
