View Full Version : how loud would my car be?

I went around trying to find new ways of cheaply putting my car on a diet, but keeping all the things I love to have like carpet and, little things like that. Anyhow I was wondering if someone with an s14 took all that tar crap out from underneath the carpet. How much louder was it in your car? Is really bad or just so so? Road noise doesn't bother me to much, its creeks and, rattles that piss me off. So just on a scale of like 1 to 10 how much louder is it without? thanks.

while it supresses noise, it also insulates the cabin and keeps the temperature normal. without that shit, heat comes in easy and cold escapes easily.

And don't forget that the exhaust runs right under the driver's-side floor, which would make things quite fun right there in fronta your driver's seat.

in an s13 with no sound deadening or carpet, the road noise at 60mph is louder than the motor/exhaust. Any little dust or pebbles on the road, will rattle around your wheels wells behind your head. The interior is frigid on cold cali nights, upside is that you control the incabin temperature with the throttle pedal :hsdance:

..........7..........

It won't really lighten the car up enough to make a difference. Just leave it there and remove the passenger side seat, rear bench, trunk carpeting, spare tire, smaller battery, entire sound system, factory spolier (if you have one), spare change, lose some weight, tire jack, power antenna (if you have one) since you would have removed the stereo system (including factory amps if you have them), passenger sunvisor, glove box, airbag system (again if you have it), all cabin mats, the trunk spare tire cover, etc...:D

Well i could just take it out of the back seats, and floor that shouldn't be to bad. I don't know I mean, do you really loose all that that much weight? I don't want to go to far with weight reduction. Just things i know I can live w/ out.

Phlip: i think you should get a lizard a frilled dragon they kinda look like dogs and you can keep them in an aquarium, so its like the best of both worlds. lol

You don't stand to lose as much weight as you would by removing at least some of the stuff that zero named above, but you would maintain all the comfortability of the car itself, if that is what you seek... I know someone on his second S14 and on the first one he removed ALL that shit int he name of ABSOLUTE weight savings (no shit, any OUNCE removed mattered) and on the second one, he decided to spare himself some creature comforts, removing only the absolutely unnecessary shit.

Well, the trunk is mostly stripped but I have a sub in it. I leave the jack in it because it saved my ass more than once. I'm 6' 0" 140 lb. so I cant afford to loose more weight my self. I like my front seats, but thinking I don't need the rears. I think I might remove the air bags, but I don't know. I think the windshield reservoir is going to go (its broken anyhow ). But other than that until I get my new sub setup I think that's all I can do without driving my self nuts. Well, thanks everyone I was really just wondering how loud it would be w/ out the tar shit but I was going to keep the carpeting in. Guess I'm just broke and looking to get a bit faster in the canyons. I know your all going to get on me about the sub and weight, but it seems to make the car feel more balanced. It's also hard to live w/ out the bumps, ya know?

I'm a pansy.. I can't even go without the thin trunk cover for any extended period of time.

Only stuff I've removed: trunk interior panels, rear speakers, spare tire.

from what a friend of mine told me (who has extensive experience with this sort of thing):

You'd be better off:
a.)leaving the stock tar shit in
b.) stripping it all out and replacing with regular dynamat (not the heavy duty stuff).

advantages:
a.) already discussed in this thread
b.) it'd weigh right around the same, and your interior would be MUCH quieter (think stock new car).

i was actually thinking about doing that, but with that brown bread stuff, since its cheaper. 0.30 lbs/sq ft. if you put all 50 feet of the roll they have, you'd only gain 15 lbs.

if you ever strip the interior, make sure you have a floormat so your shoes don't melt to the floorboard.

everything you guys list are things out of the rear of the car which makes the balance bad right? is there anything you can take out of the front thats not important. nd dont say power steering i like it.

You can use FRP fenders, bumpers, and hoods. Remove the windshield water reservoir. Relocate the fuse boxes under the dash. Use your imagination.

So what does everyone do when they have a flat? Do you get to call mommy and daddy to pick you up cause your spare is sitting in your garage? I know not all of you guys have AAA Roadside Hazard. If you're on the streets, you should have it in there, if you're at the track take it out.

I do have AAA and have had to use it, and I did call mommy to pic me up, what's your point. The next day bought new tires and all was good. Please tell my why I should have it? Now for those of you w/out AAA, then yeah I could see it being a good idea to keep it in the car for the street, but it's your car I'm not going to tell you what to do with it.

Personally, I don't drive without a spare. It's kinda dumb, in my opinion - especially for daily driving. If you're on the track, by all means, take it out. For daily driving purposes, the reduced weight from the tire's abscence will be negligible, given the slower speed driving you'll be doing.

If you plan on keeping that sub in your car, who cares about extra noise, just turn up the tunes, and all the other excess noice will no longer exist to you.
