View Full Version : A/C or heater under glove box?

I just recently hooked up a turbo gauge, and the only way I could find to get the tubing through the firewall was to remove the giant heating/ac/ventillation box underneath the glove box. This left me with 3 big gaping holes through the firewall (and of course really weak airflow through the vents). Now that it's getting cold I have to have heat again!
Now this thing has a giant condenser thing inside of it, and has a power plug. So I'm just not sure if this thing is for heat or a/c, or both. Since I don't have a/c with the SR, this is prob useless unless its actually a heater (of course none of the 3 connections were hooked up to anything) So can I just strip everything out of the plastic box, and put it back in, so air flows properly, or does it still need an connection to the engine bay to bring in air?

that big black box is the heater. my car didn't come with A/C so i had to buy that thing separately. but before i purchased that, i'd still have airflow, but it would either be hot or cold. it's basically the air from outside the car.

you're kidding me right? running a vacuum line is that hard? you need to remove your blower to route a turbo gauge?
im at a loss for words

Damn thats crazy. I just routed it with the ecu wiring harness through the firewall.

For my s14 there was a rubber piece one the driver side of the firewall that i poked through for my vacuum line.

That thing is the A/C condensor. there is a separet little radiator for the heater called the heater core. i have both of mine out becuase my heater core is leaking.

It's an S14... now running it through my old s13 was no probs, there were lots of places i could put it though... but the S14 is a pain in the ass!! It's just so tightly put together, and I don't have anything to make a hole with.. but if that thing is just the AC condensor then it shouldn't be a problem.. that would be the best way anyways..thx guys..

rip it all out like this:

or if you really couldnt get a vac line through a hole you couldve just drilled one and still kept your heater, seems a lot easier this way

There's nine easily accessible holes in the S14 firewall, and another four or five that can be enlarged. You're not trying hard enough.
The box is the A/C evaporator, not the condenser. You can remove the core from the inside of it, tape off the holes, and put it back in, otherwise you won't have any airflow through the vents, or you can order a non-A/C duct from the dealer and replace it completely. Common sense should have told you all that.

Hahahaha I'm laughing cause you probably can't remove your shift knob. I had the same problem when installing my C's shifter. The damn stock one wouldn't come off, so I had to completely remove the shifter put the bish on a vice, and use channel locks to twist it off. What a POS.

lol funny, you are absolutely right!~! I got the biggest channel lock pliers and i still couldnt get it off, it wasnt a big problem though, I had an extra shifter so i replaced the hole thing

Ya well that there is a little more work then I had planned.. Anyways, I was told that unit was soley for A/C, so I'm ripping the core of it out. Thats all I needed to know.. Enlarging and/or drilling was just a problem because I don't have any of those tools believe it or not.. This is just much cleaner.
Thanks

is it just me, or is this thread an absolute display of stupidity.
what does installing a boost gauge have to do with REMOVING YOUR DASH in order to gain access to the HVAC box, all in order to do what.. run a vacuum/boost gauge?!!
seriously, tell me i am missing something here. am i misunderstanding this thread? people should be deleted for asking such stupid questions.
drilling a hole requires a drill. poking a hole through a rubber gromet requires an ice pick, borrow one from peoples' (watch the newer version of the movie Shaft and figure that one out).
