Hi, my names Jalen and I don’t really care for making build threads but I enjoy reading others. Being that the season here in Michigan is over and the offseason is now I have time to address things I couldn’t while driving the car.

I guess I’ll start from the beginning. I traded a 02 5 speed forester I had for a week if that and some cash(more then I should of) for said 91 s13 hatch. The car was honestly pretty ratty and needed love. I didn’t know really what I was doing but nobody really does at first. Either way, this was not long after I bought it

I had spent time learning(attempting to) how to weld and repair some of the rust. The car had typical frame rail issues, rockers, and some very minor strut tower rust. I got the car half decent and paid a dude to paint it. It was sprayed ah3 single stage. It wasn’t the best but it was what I could afford at the time.

Posted up with my twin brother and his Integra probably about a month after paint and me 5lug swapping the car, PBM comp coils and square g33s.

Then, I stored the car for the winter and bought a couple different shit box dailies. First was a 91 Volvo 240 wagon(auto), now I currently own a 5 speed 89 wagon and a 01 330ci.
The car was stored at my girlfriends' moms house for a few months and I would drive from Lansing to Port Huron every other weekend to visit her and work on the car. At this point, I had had a couple of different sets of wheels, MB battles, xt7s, blitz 03s..

I then decided to go pretty hard(in my opinion) pulled the rear subframe, replaced some fuel lines dropped the gas tank and undercoated above it, burned out the subframe bushings, painted it etc,etc you guys know.

Swapped to 5” 12k/10k springs on the pbms, welded the diff, got a one-piece steel driveshaft.

How the car looked after I pulled it out of the garage after everything. I have oem skirts, wing, bumper. The valances are dorki dori.

Put the wing on, changed wheels up. Went all 17’s.

At this point, the car had extended front lcas, gktech outers+inners, and their roll center correction kit. Nothing was fitted right either due to me knowing it was gonna come back off for paint.

Thanks man! I do have more Aswell haha. I’m mad because I was writing for so long that the session timed out and I didn’t save anything so I have to start all over but it’s okay because I’ve been at work trying to do it and it wasn’t written very good

Why stiffer? It's already too stiff, he'll have to soften that rear up if he wants to drive with any sort of grip (if drifting).

Well, my real reason for getting the Swift’s is due to them allegedly being more linear. Before, the pbm comps came with 10k/8k and they allow you to run +/- 2k without needing the dampers re-valved. You may be right though as I’ve never done any real events in the thing yet. so, I can’t say if I’ll like how it truly handles as I have nothing to really compare it too

So, I’m here now haha big thanks to Damon for helping me get a build thread going. I’m going to apologize ahead of time for my lack of going into detail(not sure if you guys really would even like that) so I’m going to go back in time some and try and bring this/myself up to speed haha.

So, basically let’s go to the actual beginning(don’t worry, I’m not gonna use the same pics.)
1991 s13 hatch. When I got it the hatch was a different color, no carpet, holes in the floor, crusty torn up grey leather seats, but it was so cool to finally own a car I had been wanting since I was 15 I think. The car had rust, but I was determined to fix it myself and make the car less of a pile a shit.

This build unfortunately won’t be one of those really concise, everything is perfect builds primarily because this car is far, far, far from perfect.
BUT, I’ll do my best though.

Got the car, “fixed” the frame rails and the rockers as best as I knew how. It wasn’t done perfectly and it was also the reason I bought a welder. I had never welded anything before prior to owning this car. Grabbed a pignose from a local friend because I prefer them over shark nose. I also found a Pignose Lip I drove 4 hours to get for $40

Frame rails were trash and for whatever reason I don’t know where the finished photos of it are(not like they are good but they are better then the angle iron the po tacked onto the rot that was there) and yes I used flux cause I ran out of gas.
I did just cut everything out of I wanna say 16 gauge, again not perfect.

I did this all outside of my moms apartment I lived with at the time on the ground in a parking spot. Yes I undercoated over the rails and all that jazz but don’t have pics.
Next I fixed the rockers by cutting them out and got recommended a guy in the UK I want to say, who remakes sills/rockers. Bought those and chopped mines out not having a clue what I was doing.

I ended up redoing the right side later down the line a lot better.
At that point the car was still stock suspension with the exception of kouki tails, 5 lug swap I did and z32 wheels.

But before I put them on, I paid a dude $1500 for a single stage spray(ah3)with Prep and all that(looking back I would of avoided but didn’t have the knowledge or space at the time) this is a picture he sent me afterwards.

I was hyped to say the least.
Picked up some square g33s 17x9+15 I wanna day and got some 215/45s.

And lowered the car/aligned it(I’m a alignment tech) and enjoyed it for the rest of the summer pretty much.

My rad was leaking so I swapped that out and did a h4 swap with some silver stars,and changed the belts.

I knew winter was coming and I didn’t want to reverse all the work I had done..bought a $700 Volvo 245 wagon and needless to say you know how that story went. Drove my car for about a month in the winter with them salting roads(internally crying)

About a month later, still wanted a Volvo so I picked up this manual 245. Too say the least this car is a fucking blast. It’s slow but it never stops running and it’s a tank in the snow. Pretty sure the car has close to or over 300k as the odo stopped at 260k haha.

My girlfriend lived two hours from me in the city I used to live in and her mom let me store my car for the winter there. So it sat for a while while I was sorting and dealing with the issues that come with buying used old cars.

sorry for the double post, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t gonna have to re-type all this a third time on my phone.

SO, yeah the car sat. The more and more I looked At it it just was kinda boring looking. Simple is best imo but I was really starting to want to do something else. So I decided to go type x as you saw in my first post. Bought 18s. Chrome battles and xt7s a buddy powder coated for me.

Decided 18s, were a little too big for me up front so I went the 17/18 route.
Idk if it was the xt7s, but being they were 18x9.5+12 I had to run a lot of negative camber in the rear to fit them with 225/35s. That’s when I picked up the xc8’s in 17x9+17.

Picked up a key!s 330mm from evasive and wasn’t a fan of it in my s13. I think it was how deep it felt compared to my nardi that I had in it.

At that point I pulled the rear subframe and dropped the gas tank. Only one of my rear calipers locked up so I replaced them both and did the rear brakes along with the pbm subframe risers, eccentric lockouts, all new es poly bushings for the lca’s, rear uprights, isr pro arms, welded diff and Swift’s on my pbms. Then, I had to address the front suspension. Gktech extended flcas,inners,outers and their roll center correction kit which I’ll touch on why I got rid of them later.

Also, got a little cup holder from STI and it came with this cool little postcard of streeter’s coupe I wanna say. Atleast it says streeter on it.

I also did a tune up, deleted egr, installed isr headers and testpipe I got in a trade for my g33’s.

Got a bride rep and some street faction rails which I don’t have any pics of installed.Also, put in some es rack bushings and isr rack lines.

After I got all that wrapped up decided to start searching for some oem kouki aero. Managed to get ahold of two sets of skirts, dorki valances, new oem bumper/extensions lights, oem wing, and dorki poly lip(not the grey one, I had two lips) aero marker mirrors.

I finally got the car back together and on the ground( I was driving 4 hours round trip every other weekend to go work in a unheated/not insulated garage)
And spring was around the corner. My girls mom was moving out of the house so I had to move the car all the way back to Lansing. I eyeballed the alignment and drove it all the way home. At that point, I didn’t have anywhere to keep my car being that I live in an apartment.
Me an my brother decided to go halfsies on a small storage space. 16x38’ with shitty lights, no heat and 110 sockets for electrical. But more ideal then being outside fixing things.

My car was insured but no plate. I had a bunch of fun doing a little streeting and eventually tire caught the fender after I lowered it because I didn’t like how it sat haha. This is the reason I got rid of the rcc kit. It pushes your wheels out 25mm so it works better for wheels that aren’t as low of offset and if you don’t have your car very low. Bought some decently clean fenders for $100 from a guy in kzoo.

Swapped the fender out and the apartment management told me to move my car or it would be towed due to no plate. Put a expired plate on(I know, I don’t think they cared because there’s multiple cars with expired plates in my complex) and they put another sticker on it. I got mad and moved the car to the shop and it was an absolute pain getting the car in the shop do to how low it is.

After fighting with the car, I knew that it was going to stay in there until I painted which was quite the endeavor. I decided to learn how to do it, I asked people on the internet a bunch of questions, red a lot of things but ultimately, I had no one that could stop me from making mistakes. So I prepped, sanded, sanded, sanded, sanded, you guys get it. Deleted the third brake light and shaved the antenna.

Took everything back apart to prime the car fully with polyester filler to get everything somewhat straight and then block it, shoot urethane primer and wetsand it.

Cut the passenger side rocker out about a foot section to make it better then what I did in the past.

Prepped the kit and all that jazz in a day or two. I also bought this air compressor being it was the biggest that I could safely run in my “shop”.

Two things I failed to mention is that I felt I needed a third car for due to issues with my girlfriends car I had to constantly fix(03 protege ughh)
And I picked up a 01 330ci. It’s not the nicest but I didn’t care and it came with some cool stuff. It did cause me to get sidetracked for awhile here’s it before and after I owned it for a few months.

The second thing I failed to mention was that I was aiming to have the car painted before super d Midwest trial at usair. I wasn’t driving I just wanted to give myself a deadline because I went on vacation the week before so I was trying to get the car hammered out. It didn’t happen so here’s a photo dump from when a bunch of friends and myself went out to the dairy state!

Then, the guy I rent the storage from got mad and told me I couldn’t paint In there. I was pretty upset but there was nothing I could do. Then I remembered my buddy had a barn that had a desiccant filtration system and a huge 2 stage compressor. Before I ever even painted anything he said if I needed a space I could bring the car there. So, after a lot of fighting, raising the car and loading something for the first time and in the rain I made to his barn 7 minutes down the road.

I also forgot to mention, i picked up gktech v3 super drift knuckles and that remedied my issues with the wheels sticking to far put up front and hitting the fender. I even went down to a 205...

Got it unloaded and the next day I painted it in a makeshift booth that almost killed me and my brother. It was a good time. Orange peel for days but nothing some wetsanding(which I did) and buffing couldn’t fix.

That’s pretty much where I sit now. Right now I’m selling a bunch of stuff just to get it out of my way. The goals this winter are to: drop front subframe and move the rack forward, pull motor refreshen it without actually opening it up, fixing minor bay rust and paint the bay. Lastly, I really really wanna work on the interior. It’s looked like ass since I bought the car and hasn’t got any better really. Here’s a pic of how dusty and dirty it is inside

Messed around with the car a little today. Primarily the ebrake. I had a spare lever that had the cover that I was missing so I swapped that on. Ever since I bought the car the button to realease the ebrake stays in which I’m assuming it’s the cheaper way to basically make it solely for drifting. I’d rather have a button in it to allow it to function like it’s suppose to and to change it when I wanna use it for slidey things. I also installed my oem boot and the shift knob.

Sorry it’s been a little bit haha been busy with you know, snow. Anyhow, I have progressed with the car.
I’ve been tossing around the idea of rebuilding the motor. The car ran great minus the fact the 3” straight pipe sounds like trash na and I have 0 backpressure. The reason being, the cars odo reads like 262k or something of the like and I just would feel more comfortable KNOWING the mileage and that everything’s done myself aside from machine work.
So, plans are to keep the motor na and not overcomplicate something that doesn’t need to be complicated. Probably gonna grab a tomei headgasket, possibly hot cam swap, arp studs,basically use stock rods and possibly get forged pistons for the future. I want pistons that are forged that will be around if not the same compression that the car is from factory that way it’s not sluggish due to low compression pistons in na configuration. I know the rods can handle some abuse but we will see when I open the block.

Initially I was going to pull the head and just rebuild it and do new valve seals, cam swap and arps. Still up in the air. Yes I know I should have compression tested the car before I pulled things apart and I did in the past and it seemed fine from what I can remember. Anyone who’s been in my shoes chime in and give me some direction haha

Lastly, some more plans for the car. I plan to stitch weld the bay, fix the rust near where the brake line bracket is in the wheel well.
Paint the bay and re-loom the engine harness, relocated the battery, basically clean the bay up. Then,I will dissassemble the motor and have it’s components measured and looked over at the machine shop since I don’t have good mics and suck at measuring things like a machinist can. But, will be back with updates

So, some things happened and I did some things...basically pulled the motor and the trans in a day and today I had time to seperate the trans and remove mostly all the accessories. This is my first time doing any of this on a s13 so bare with me as I try and figure out these things. Just wanna do it right and not have a shit ton of issues. I also fixed the exhaust on my daily and welded some stuff. I’ve been doing a lot of maintenance to keep her running and for 300k she’s a tank. Hopefully she’ll go all winter without any major hiccups

So, been busy chipping away at this thing. Got some cool things in the mail aswell. I’ve also decided to keep the rebuild stock. I’ve been talking to the machinist and just expressed to him I’m trying to keep things simple. I explained that I just wanted to have the crank checked, have the block decked if it needs it, cylinders Honed and possibly bored over if they are out of spec or egg shaped.
I have a couple mic’s and dial bore guages but they are cheap and not great quality so I’m unsure of how much I trust them. Eitherway I’m going to be re-using stock rods and grabbing new npr pistons.
The motor will be stock with the exception of arp headstuds.

Head was hot tanked, resurfaced, pressure tested and vacuum tested to make sure the valves were sealing. I’m not going to go any further doing a valve job or replacing guides. I’m just going to pull it apart and clean up the valves and put some new valve seals on. But I picked up the head today from the machine shop

So, some of my next moves are going to be rebuilding the oil pump on my old cover and getting a oem timing chain kit unless anyone has any recommendations that are on par with oem for less haha.
I need to change the studs on head for the exhaust mani because I have all new studs and I have to extract a broken stud.

Once that’s done, I’m going start reassembly of the motor. Then I’m gonna get crackin’ on the bay bois!! Lol then I’ll move the rack forward to avoid the issues associated with schassis and more angle then stock. Then at some point I’ll really start addressing the interior haha. Saw what happened to your fender from the wheels. To stop that from happening again if you decide to go lower and experiment with wheel sizes, you can take a metal rod from any hardware store. A thin long one and weld it to the inside of your front fender. Stitch weld would be fine. Then roll them up front as normal. Will stop your front fender from crunching up from the front tire

Progress is being made although slowly due to life haha and owning two s13’s. Which brings me to the point that I will periodically update this thread with stuff about the other car aswell but the point of this thread is mainly focused on the red hatch.

So, I left off with my block and crank being dropped off at the machine shop. It’s been around two weeks now and I haven’t heard anything back so I’m still patiently waiting on that. The head is pretty much done officially. All I did to it was change the valve seals and exhaust studs to er spec and have the head milled.
I stripped my old spare valve cover and shaved the letters and painted it wrinkle black. I think it came out pretty rad even though it’s basic haha

I took something’s to work and cleaned them up. Mainly the lower timing cover, rear main housing and the pick up tube. I then replaced the front crank seal and rear main seal with oem seals.
Cleaned everything up and gave some of the stuff a shot of that aluminum spray paint just to kind of make things look cleaner

I’m super glad I cleaned out the pick up tube with compressed air and some brake cleaner lol there was a huge chunk of silicone that got sucked into it at some point in it’s life.

So what’s left on the red car as far as the engine goes is
-assemble bottom end
-install new timing components
-simplify the intake
-clean up engine harness
-rebuild oil pump(parts are ordered)

Then the engine bay will get attention. Generally, I’m not a mis-match bay kind of guy, atleast I’m not now haha, but what do you guys think I should spray it? Torn in between a metallic silver or torch red like the rest of the car and because I already have the paint. But I don’t mind getting something else because I’d rather do it once and be satisfied...

Update on the other car
So, long champs are hopefully going at the end of this week because 14s are a bit too small for my taste so I picked up some pretty weak but cool wheels.
They are 4 lug avs vs-6 16x7+30. I’m going to have 25mm spacers behind them so they aren’t so sunk lol going to run 195/45s on them and maybe go up to a 50. They were just a little cheaper in that size so I scooped them.

I came across a set of some used spl tension rods that I got for a decent price.
Placed a order for all rear adjustable gktech arms and I’m probably going to get their subframe risers aswell just to follow the theme. Like I said, the goal of this car is to keep it simple and reliable. The most I’m probably going to do this car angle wise this year is the gktech roll center correction adapters( I know I should of held on to them) and slip on rack spacers. Trying to avoid the issues that a bunch of angle tends to give s13s.
Also, picked up a nismo gt knob, bride head pad for my zeta, and a 330mm nardi.

Some updates on the bay. Dropped the front subframe so I can clean everything up and modify it. Pulled everything out of the engine bay which included the wiring harness and the fuse boxes. I opened up the hole on the driverside so that the fuse boxes would fit out of them. The cars not perfect nor ever will be so I don’t really care haha.

Anyhow, I have some rust issues to address before anything and then I can begin cleaning everything again and grinding off all the seam sealer and prep them to be stitch welded.

Don’t have running water at the shower so I’m trying to make due with degreaser and brake clean lol.

Small update. Talked to machine shop block is getting honed and I’m going to be using stock bore pistons. Everything else was in good shape as far as the crank went so I’ll be dropping the rods off for them to check out.

After pulling my subframe I decided that now would be the time to move it forward because time and time again, dudes I know would tell me not to run offset rack spacers. I even had a pair but never ran them and just sold them. I’ve heard good and bad about them. Eitherway, this seemed to be the better of the two options and I decided to give it a shot haha. I’m not a fabricator by anymeans. I saved $250 I was quoted from a local doing it myself. All I had to do was buy a spoil of wire.

What’s up guys! I know no one probably really cares and my progress is lame but for those of you do who are even remotely interested I’ll just write up what I’ve been doing lately.

Progress has been SLOWER on the red hatch due to two things. Waiting for things and because the other hatch needed a lot of love so I could have something to get some seat time in come spring.

Got the rack bolted up and the subframe painted and everything looks pretty good and hopefully it drives that way. I swapped the oil pump gears in the cover along with the oil pump relief valve. I noticed that no shims cam out of the old assembly. Not sure if I should add the two that came with the new ones? Would like anyone who has experience with this opinion.

Got a call from the machine shop that the block is ready to go and had been cleaned and honed. Didn’t need to overbore it or anything so just going to run original size pistons. I need to go pick it up but my work schedule makes doing so a bit hard.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on getting my other hatch to a drivable less of a shit box kind of state.

Jk, very much alive despite this weather making me want to not do anything.
So, maybe you guys are or aren’t even remotely interested but the red car has been on a hiatus sadly. I put it on the back burner because like most who own schassis modding one isn’t enough at times. So, these updates will be a little more in depth on the black hatch as it’s what I’ve been spending my Time working on. I can’t really paint a bay when it’s negative outside and assemble an engine when everything’s really cold because my measurements could be off so I’m not going to chance it.

Over the winter I decided to do some maintenance that the po neglected to do.

Did all rear gktech arms and solid bushings.
New isr mbse exhaust and I had to get the rear muffler bracket because the po decided welding a craftsmen wrench and welding the exhaust to the frame rails would last long.

-5 lugged swapped the car oe z32 rears/cheapo fronts

Currently, swapping from a shitty e-fan to the clutch fan and using the gktech fan.
Got new lugnuts and extended rear studs so I can use slip on spacers to dial out some camber with 10j wheels on the back.
Also, I got gktech poly trans mount and motor mounts for the car.

hey, nice progress ive been checking this thread out at work over the months.

with that being said. if that is the oven you cook food in, stop cooking parts in there. the paint needs heat to cure it, but while its curing, it is gassing off and letting compounds free in your oven. the heat just further bakes it into the actual oven itself. when you reheat the oven (such as cooking food), it can release some of these compounds into what you are cooking.

you can usually get away with it a couple of times, but i wouldnt even try it once. get a dedicated oven for parts. my dedicated oven stinks to high hell.

SMALL LIL UPDATE

So, I’ve been chipping away this car sense the weathers been getting better.
Dropped the model 5s off to a buddy to powdercoat and before I was going to pitch the center caps because I thought they were trashed but I ended up taking some nail polish remover and some scotchbrite and sanded away all the shitty blue spray paint. Came out pretty damn decent for some caps I was going to scrap haha and I’m glad I didn’t

Decided to sell some things and ended up picking up a oem type x bumper instead of the frp one I have now. Also grab pole position lights but unsure if I’m going to run turn signals.

Over the past weekend I decided to mount my seats in the car on my sf brackets. I attempted to use the generic sliders but they were just giving me a hard time so I just said fuck it and hard mounted the seats and played with seating position until it felt somewhat comfortable.

I really didn’t want to do this but me being me did it. I pulled the intake off the single cam to replace every hose, gasket and delete all the emissions bs. I got rid of the secondary butterflies (I know I may lose some low end due to velocity of air moving lowering), evap canister, all the vac lines. Pretty much the only things that I’m keeping is the acc and iac.

So I pulled the intake in about an hour or two

Couldn’t leave the holes open for the rod the butterflies screw into and I don’t have a tig welder so I cut up the rod and tapped the hole where the rod enters to put a bolt through.
I then took the cut pieces of rod and some job weld and slathered them in it and pushed them into the openings.

Thanks for the kind words guys. First event is this Saturday but I won’t be driving unfortunately because I’m a lame ass and I need to do a few more things which include getting it legal, making a battery tie down bracket, alignment, fire extinguisher and a helmet. Those would get me on the track driving.

Also, FBG is upon us and at the very least I want to get the mismatch body panels/kit painted.

The car is back together and running and seems good for now but haven’t driven it yet. It’s maiden voyage will be when I bring it to work to align or or get it legal. So, I got the intake back on with new gaskets, emissions deleted, new thermostat, hoses,waterpump, fan clutch and cx racing radiator. It’s been bled and it seems to run fine. Recently, I picked up a yashio factory okatchan temp meter. The v1 version. A cool piece indeed. One issue though is that it’s the obd version and this car is a single cam originally and the ecu had no option for a consult port. This leads me to my next question to you guys. I know for a fact that it functions and has power so can it be hardwired? I know which wires are 12v and ground. The issue is that there are 4 wires left and unsure what wires need to see what in order to give me at the minimum, the water temp.

It will only read .1 and occasionally .2 but it doesn’t do anything else.

I got the wheels back and tossed some tires on. 215/40 on the 17s and 225/40 on the 18s.

I’ve tried testing all the wires with battery voltage though the 12v and grounding the black wire, then I tried each of the 4 wires on the actually temp sensor on the intake. I would imagine it could be hardwired but maybe I’m wrong any insight is appreciated.

Aside from that I got the kouki bumper on, Dmax position lights wired so the turn and drl can function together in one housing.
I eyeballed the toe just so I could drive it because it was way fucked prior to that.

Man, it’s been awhile since I updated this.
Final bout gallery was an awesome event. Met a lot of homies and memories in those two days is Wisconsin. I drove the car 7-8 hrs through the highways of chiraq without a hiccup. It was surreal !

I prepped the car, sprayed the fineline kit, bought some 18” p1s yadda yadda. I smashed the rf fender sliding in the rain. I don’t have any pics of the damage but I got it sorted within a day or so and had everything one color again.

After that, I was really focused on driving. The car seemed solid but there were things it was missing that I felt it needed. I got rid of the 18x10 model 5s, the buddy clubs and decided to go backwards in some people’s opinion. Style is subjective though obviously. I went back to 17s all the way around and picked up a pair of chrome model 5 and some fn01rc’s for spares.

I went, back to oem type x and sold my friend my old hotroad replica stuff.

Thanks dudes! And Lansing is cool although it’s straight up a college town. I lived in flint from the time I was a 6-14 so there was never really a big car scene like drifting growing up around there. But I’m originally from Detroit. Eitherway the Midwest is my home but sometimes I wanna leave!

So another update lol. At this point in time I really was trying my hardest to drive at my local track which is about a hour and 15 minutes away depending on traffic. There was test n’ tunes every Thursday for a bit and the first one I tried to go to got rained out. So I got lucky and was able to get the next Thursday off again which was difficult to get off because it’s a longer day at work.

Long story short, drove there for the car to break 5 minutes outside the entrance. Spent like a month trying to figure out what caused the car to stall out and stumble on acceleration+ intermittent shitty idle.Eventually, it got to the point where I had replaced almost every ignition component, leak down/compression tested the motor, timing, replaced all the fuel related items including injectors and fuel pump. Then, one day my wipers/radio and heater controls stopped working. I had a spare ignition switch and after a friend reminded me that that could be it I had nothing to lose. Swapped it in and boom! She fired up easy and idled better.

To celebrate, I bought more wheels

After making some cash, I had a hole burning in my pocket. Jk. But, I wanted to do something I just didn’t know what. Then, one week my buddy told me about club fr jam and how mike and tony from burstspeed were renting cars out to drift for two days. We rented because he sold his s13 coupe and I really wasn’t trying to put that stress on my car and have to come back to work later that week. Or atleast try to drive back haha. My friend traded them some wheels and tires and they accepted his offer so we got some money knocked off the rental fees. It was very last minute but it was worth every DAMN Penny. I suck at drifting because I’ve only done it on the street and never a track but I HIGHLY SUGGEST EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO DRIVE.....DRIVE USAIR. You will not be sorry. The atmosphere is unreal and it was so awesome to be back a second time in one year. The hospitality and the generosity were second to none coming from guys I look up to. If any of you guys every find your way on this thread, you guys are the most humble, selfless dudes I’ve ever met. So, its been some time and Im pretty bad at updating this thread. Among other things, Ive had a bit more free time due to work being slow from all this virus shit so Im going to pickup where I left off.

So I had drove the rental hatch at usair and after coming back I randomly started putting my ka together haha. It still needs the pan and timing stuff put back on it but I didnt care because I didnt necessarily need the motor for anything at the moment. Heres some pictures of a 75% assembled ka. I had promised my friends that Id drive this event at kilkare in Ohio. It was Halloween bash and really like my first event in my own car. It went really well aside from the fact the second day, the track got absolutely rained out. although people still drove, the layout was the opposite of the previous day and I was content with my previous day of driving. Didnt get a whole lot of pictures of me driving but maybe like two, but I did have some videos on my Instagram. Car did great! Had no issues for the 4-6 hours I drove

I swapped a new overflow and some shifter return springs in. That?s about the extent of my off season prep haha:)

Then, I decided that my reliable Volvo was not fast enough so I swapped a B230ft in I went through and resealed/new gaskets along with that a borgwarner t5 from a mustang with the 5.0.
I completed the swap and had it going down the road in a month. It was still very cold and I have no heat in my garage so it was a lot of dragging going on with work and weather

Car runs great and is actually pretty quick even with a small td04hl on it. Its on 11ish psi and pulls pretty hard.

Then I bought a another daily for my old lady and not a month into owning it blew a headgasket. Did it at work in between actually working on other vehicles in a day and a half.

ALSO, I forgot to mention I had around $1200 worth of tools stolen out of my car which was pretty much everything I had for working on cars outside of work. Yes I have plenty of tools in my box at work but still sucks to have everything ripped out of your hands like that. It was a stupid mistake I made and needless to say that set me back and I will not be making that mistake again.

I ended up parting ways with a few wheels and picking up a pair of fat vs6 to pit with my skinny model 6?s lol. They were white and I was not in love with them in white on my car so I spray painted them and hate it. They are 17x9+35 with 215/40?s. Probably going to end up having them powder coated.

Then and only then did I decide to make a poor mistake. I bought a truck. A big ol’ stinky one. Logical? No. But, after my friend towing my car all the way to Xenia,OH for that last event with his aluminum open trailer, in his duramax Colorado with 4 people...i could not return to street driving to my local track as it’s an hour and a half away. No where near as nice but it fits me in a way if you know me. I like shit boxes.

Man, I?ve sorta been working on this thing here and there. Actually more then I want to but I?m guilty of the fact that sometimes working on this stupid thing is well...therapeutic in ways.
Something in me felt the need to try and do my best to make this car better in a bunch of different ways. The quest for a compromise in between a low/better handling machine. Something I felt was a culmination of what I like in a car.

Any how. Ive been trying to just get the car to a state that I don?t believe it?s been in for a while. So naturally, I ordered some parts. A good internet friend of mines recommended nismo mounts to raise the pan above the subframe and are a great alternative to most of the sold polyurethane mounts that are offered.
So, I scored a full set bnib(trans mount included) for $230 off eBay! Pretty neat.

I sold off my gktech rcc correction kit and paid for heatmaker hotside knuckles that Julian makes.I also held onto a front subframe I modified for my old car moving the rack 25mm forward. Decided to put that in along with some better shape es bushings I had laying around.

Seeing/ride alongs with my friends propelled me to continue working on my car even when 50+ hour work weeks filled with working on cars drains you to the point where working on your own car is well...UNINTERESTING. Hahaha I?m sure many of you know the pain.

Extended the old control arms I had on my car 25mm to pair with the new knuckles. This was my first time And I don?t have the proper tools but I?m willing to try something myself.

That brings me to the rear of the car. Two people I talk to a bunch who are like minded In the sense that they appreciate the low style/stock body style schassis both had ended up getting some driftworks geomaster 2 knuckles for the rear and although they needed a very small amount of modification being they are not built off the stock knuckle. So, I went ahead and picked some up and they went in pretty smoothly. I did run into some issues running higher offset 9j 17s (+35 specifically) in the rear because of this, but I shaved the lcas down a little bit to gain clearance and there?s a chance the car will have to be raised some to compensate anyway for the knew rear knuckles. A small spacer will alleviate this issue.

So, I also ended up picking a c?s (first style) short shifter. I liked the shifter return springs but my cars shifting still felt super sloppy. I personally don?t like short shifters so it was a toss up between this and a nismo solid shifter.

I then fixed the headlight motor wiring. In the time I?ve owned this car, it?s never had functioning pop ups. Along with that, I fixed my headlights in general because after the last event I drove in October I lost one light, then when I was cruising Woodward in Detroit I lost the other. So, I did that and installed some led bulbs in the position lights !

Decided to fab up a small brace for my tension rod brackets. I?ve already dumped more money than this car is probably worth into it so I figured I?d might as well try my hand at something. This is flux core too because I let someone borrow my welder and they broke my regulator so I haven?t used gas since. The bottom of the brackets will be braced as well and I?m thinking of ways I can make them a bit more low car friendly.

Cool car you have here dude. Bang out the bottom of the pan on that thing dude, sketchy! haha. Also make sure you fill it a quart over on track days, that's how my KA bit the dust.

The tension rod brace makes a ton of difference man, really any chassis stiffness that you can add to these wet noodles is a huge bonus.

That?s the hope man! And yeah as far as the pan, that the plan man I was actually thinking about pulling the dent out of the pan with a stud welder haha. Don?t know how well it?ll work and at this point dropping the subframe to pull the pan isn?t too difficult to do anyway

Got the yf gauge and tension rod brace done and the yf braces on. Even managed to get the wiring sorted for the yf gauge. It now displays water/oil temp via two channels+more that can be Selected via the switch that was included.

Hoping these knuckles will show up within a week or so because I?ve missed 4 events since I put my car on stands and I really would like to drive some this season. Those tension rod braces are interesting. Anything to help the wet noodle front end of an S13 I'm sure helps.

Finally got knuckles yesterday. They look insane.So went ahead and installed them along with q45 brakes/ss lines.

Control arms are extended 25mm and I?m using moog s14 tie rod along with what I want to say is a 90?s maxima outer? I can?t remember I have so many combinations of random inners/outers in a box haha.

Eyeballed the alignment and we should be about Gucci to lower the thing today after work and adjust ride height and such and work out all the small kinks as with anything.

Man, this build took a relatively sharp turn south. Haha. So, let?s back track.
I ended up getting the car back together suspension wise and I was hyped. So I started it and I had the infamous lifter ?tick? single cam ka?s are known for. So me being me, I pulled the valve cover and debated on whether or not I should replace just the problematic one or just all of em. So, I found a full set of 12 oem rockers so just went that route.

I then noticed the driverside timing guide was missing a chunk. So then it dawned on me and decided I?d pull the front cover and oil pan off and do the timing components.

You can see the rubber expansion plug I made due to the fact that once I assembled everything something was style making noise with engine speed. It sound like the timing chain so drilled a I believe 2? hole in the front timing cover to ease the removal of the tensioner. I swapped to my old one which made no difference. So I then opted for an even more expensive ?ratcheting? tensioner to see if maybe it was somehow slack in the chain.

What was weird was that the motor ran smooth and normal at idle but above it you could hear what sounded like timing chain slap. Upon this inspection, I realized my oil pressure was reading funny. It always has been pretty low at idle when hot like 6-7 psi but the dummy light never kicked on(yes it works) but this made me more concerned because even with the new pump, the oil pressure wouldn?t rise past 3k rpm. Max it would see was like 40-45 psi cold and drop from there and when revving it it would sometimes go down?? Unsure if my gauge was accurate so I hooked up a mechanical gauge to the sender and gave me the exact same readings.

Bearings were scored pretty nicely on some of the journals so I?m chalking the oil pressure up to worn bearings from pieces of the timing guide being circulated throughout a engine I beat on regularly.



I was torn in between rebuilding the single cam after buying all this oem shit for it and I even went on to trying to hone the block myself with a stone hone. Didn?t really get the desired crosshatching I wanted so I tried to get in contact with 4 machine shops all being atleast a month out. Wasn?t enough time for me to make the last event I?m probably driving this year.

Then, I hit my homie up who?s a machinist and he recommended me a guy that seemed like a really solid candidate but it fell through and I was at a complete stand still.

So I was at a Stand still with what I wanted to do. So, without much time I was looking at the dual cam i mostly assembled awhile back and I didn?t want to swap it because even with machine work I felt the single cam would be a bit cheaper due to the fact I had sold off a bunch of dual cam stuff and for whatever reason it?s seems to be expensive around here for parts. Hell, a dude I know just sold a 1 owner, mint hatch he had for $32k with a single cam on bat.

Anyway, made the decision to just swap to the dual cam because it was my best option at this point.
Specs on the engine are pretty simple
Oem gaskets all around
All new exhaust studs
Oem head gasket
Hone
New rings and standard clevite bearings
Decked head
Arp headstuds
Osk timing set

Then this happened. Broke a stud somehow on the very last torque sequence. All the others were fine and the included fastener lube was utilized. Managed to get it out and replaced

Most of the bay back together. Remounted setrab ps cooler, got rid of the stock ps lines because I kinked the hell out of my high pressure line so just ended up getting the isr kit. Got the body harness plug swapped out and put in a dual cam cluster I had laying around. Throttle cable swapped. New clutch line as well

Signed up for Halloween bash again this year so let?s hope I can have the car together and everything goes smoothly. I?m very close to being able to put it in just have to get the flywheel/clutch on and the pilot bearing swapped out. The knock sensor needs to be mounted(in the mail)still and since I deleted the factory
Pcv intake tree thing I have to figure out a way to tie the the factory pcv in or running a catch can since it needs to see vac I believe to function being that it?s a check valve. So that?s pretty much where I?m at currently with this stupid thing

So managed to get the motor in by myself the other day. I ended up replacing the pilot bearing using the ol greasy boi trick. Work like charm being my first time on a old ka. Anyway it came out in fragments haha.

Went to grand haven for a day trip sorta thing with some of my family and came back and got the harness in and managed a first start today. It has open headers atm so its atrocious but it sounds pretty healthy. Feels good to go from assembling a motor somewhat to being swapped into my car and running in less then two weeks by myself. Feels cool. But anyway, still a lot of tidying up to do and routing of a few wires.

Assemble the rest of the accessories(alt,belts,ps stuff)
Put some water in the engine
Fab up a flex pipe for the exhaust In place of cat
Bleed ps
Make some -8 lines for ps cooler
Break in motor/clutch
Install my sorry looking body panels
Swap some wires around for the pbm/yf gauges
Change oil once or twice before this event
Fill engine with good oil(gonna try redline 5w50)
Align car at work


If everything goes to plan I should have this thing pretty much back on the road within the next week. Cheers!

Cars been running great for a few weeks now. Feels super healthy. Only issues I had was the one dead injector I swapped had a upper o-ring get pinched and eventually started leaking. Got that swapped and all is well.

I was not happy with fitment after tossing extended the first pair of lcas a inch. Like it was okay but I didnt really wanna use huge spacers if I didnt have to. So I had a brand new pair of lcas and made some 38mm extensions. Not perfect but whatever.

Thanks man! I tried to not just dump it like some schassis owners typically do and ride around with it handling like absolute poop. It doesn?t obviously handle like some car that?s not 2? off the ground but I wanted to have some level of handling at such a low height. There?s a couple of cars I?ve taken inspiration from a big one being Mikinyu,asano,keeve,juan,nick,tmy.180s cars being really big inspirations to why I chose to keep the car low. My cars nowhere near their level of dedication to being low. But they are super interesting to me nonetheless and that?s just sorta the style I?m after but want it to be relatively capable on the track.

Hell yeah dude! At some point after my racecar is done, I want to section the frame rails on the street car so I can run it really low. I plan to go through the whole chassis though so I can make the thing last haha.

Going to hit any events this season? I'm trying to get mine together so I can at least do a few. Maybe head down south to do a Drift Nirvana event even.

Pretty much have this thing sorted for the most part. Cars been running good/feels good suspension wise. Got all the lights up front functioning and finally tossed my bumper back on and changed the oil. Ive clocked maybe close to 150 miles on it so far so Im hoping to hit 250 before this event and nut and bolt check the car and change to redline oil/Mobil filter. Right now Im just using Mobil 5w30 for break in.

As per usual nothing went how it was suppose to go that weekend of the drift event. I tried out the kr20a?s on the street and the car had way more grip then I was used to. This was the night of the local Halloween bash that I had did a few laps in my buddies car at. Not the one at kilkare raceway I was planning on driving.
Was trying to sort out the grip issues and sorta get it to where I felt comfortable using the tires before I just assumed I?d be able to drive okay on them at the event. In doing so, spun a bearing on #1 rod. I was fucking sick that day over it and that was a Monday I realized it was knocking. I had the trailer lined up for Thursday night and was going to leave Friday.Tuesday I drove it to my garage(I didn?t care) and pulled the motor.
Before that I drained the oil of course. Weird thing was the car maintained great oil pressure above idle. Unsure of what caused it. Possibly clearance issues that I miscalculated or me ?beating on the car?. Yes I changed the oil multiple times and tried making sure to let the engine break in and go up hills and such to seat the rings.

After that a local homie of mines ended up trading me a ka he had pulled and I went through and did all the basic maintenance shit you?d do while a motor is out. Timing chain/components, oil pump stuff and all the other various seals.
So, that motors in the car and running now as of a few days ago. Super Sad this car has had 3 ka?s in it this year and no events. That?s the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

Maybe source another decent crank if the machine shop doesn?t wanna grind the crank of it doesn?t polish out. Kicking myself as I had a spare ka block/crank I literally set out in the garbage because I thought I?d never need it(had it for 3-4 years) and low and behold lmao. It?s the way she goes though

Man, sorry for the lack of updates. The car has me slowly moving along. It got pretty cold and I hated being in a garage with no heat when it was below freezing. That being said I did still manage to wander out to my garage about 1-2 times a week.

So, i got the ka from my friend in and running. The car had a stupid issue with the idle where it would rev up to about 1.5k-2k cold but warmed up, it would idle at like 1k and falter down to like 500 rpm like it wanted to stall. I checked all the basic stuff like vac leaks, unplugging the maf to see if the maf was giving me issues. The car would almost want to stall with the intake cone filter on and ran better with it off.
So I switched back to the Oem intake and cleaned the maf. Still persisted. Checked the codes and have a recurring code 34(knock sensor) checked the voltage(4.9v) at the sub harness and the engine harness and had voltage through it so maybe the new knock sensor I got was a dud or the subharness is actually bad and maybe the shielded wire is just trash. My clusters cel has never worked and the last motor felt sorta sluggish even with the new knock sensor. I just never checked the codes so it may have been a issue on the last motor as well.

Anyhow, Im replacing the knock sensor and subharness this time around and Im going to check and see if that helps.

Removed the intake because I found what I believe was a small leak at the plenum gasket. Could be slightly uneven mating surfaces or I just failed to tighten everything enough. Anyhow, Im going to run a small bead of silicone with the new gasket and hopefully that squares it away.the knock code could have been due to the vac leak but im not totally sure. Along with that, Im replacing the injectors for some refurbished ones as well.
Ended up making a ugly plate for the iac and the air regulator under the intake. I I know I know, the factory ecu doesnt like to run without them but Im not spending to $200 dollars on a new Oem one and i dont really care if my idle is a bit high and if its super cold having troublesome cold starts. If I get annoyed enough Ill add it back. Cracked the tb and possibly drill some tiny holes in the throttle plate and adjust tps voltage accordingly. Chime in if you know anything about what Im doing and its helpful advice.

Also, to rule out fuel issues, i went ahead and hardwired the fuel pump and got a tee and liquid fuel pressure gauge just to install inline to help verify base pressure and things of that nature.

Ive tried swapping the ecu as well as far as the knock sensor code went and it presented the same outcome. Along with that I swapped out the old ass tps I had with a newer one I had laying around.

Also, ended up getting a 4.9 s14 diff off my buddy. Swapped the covers, got the stripped drain plug out of the s13 cover, new bolts and some solid bushings and a little paint goes a long way.

As far as suspension and interior goes, Ive been slowly using the interior/vinyl paint to convert some of the mismatch panels I had to black. I had blue door cards and a bunch of other small stuff. Next Ill be working on just other small parts and hopefully I can get it back together soon. Aside from that I bought a new seat. Ended up getting the thrashracing pro spec gamma with the yellow carbon/kevlar back.

Really wanted a bride maxis 2 or zieg 2 but that would never happen with todays inflation lol.
So zeta 1 will probably become passenger seat.
Suspension is pretty much buttoned up needing small adjustments to ride height and alignment but thatll happen when the car is back on the ground running.
Went back to 25mm extended arms vs the 38mm which made certain wheels difficult to fit but added grease zerks to the sleeves and installed Es Lca bushings and new moog ball joints. Worth mentioning the quality of the ball joints in the full moog arm is different from the separate ball joints that cost about as much as a full arm with ball joints already.
