Here's the story, I want to buy an s13 from a car lot here in san diego. Problem is the dealer selling the car has not smog the car and does not want to invest money to smoging it. So they will only sell it as out of state. Considering the price of the car it does not matter if I can't fix it and pass smog, I can drop a new motor into it and it would still be a great deal. The car starts and runs. What I need is someone with a out of state license to sign and release the car from the dealer, than transfer the title to me. Thats all you have to do. If you can help please email me.

sounds like a POS car. I would avoid it. You can find shells with no motors in them for probably cheaper.

you will have to register it out of state first.. then transfer the title over here, but in order to do that, you have to have teh car pass smog in Cali first...
You cant really buy a car out of state and bring it here, so you will have to register it in another state first.
1. Register car out of state
2. Smog it in cali
3. take it to DMV to inspect (horn, turn signals, look at engine etc) then you can transfer.
I think it would be hard to bring an already swapped car into cali just becuase DMV looks at it... I think they look at the VIN on the engine

sounds like you guys don't think this is such a great idea. I'm gonna listen to yall and think this through before I buy it.
Heres what I'm working with:
1991 S13 coupe 5spd
the body is completely clean and no rust or damage
The interior is pretty clean except for a minor crack on the dash(I think this is pretty common)
Allthough it has 192K miles the car starts and runs fine.
All this for $800
Most shells usually go for about $500 and they almost never just need a motor. I have my eye on a motor right now, so the current engine in the car will eventually get tossed. I have and s14 right now, if I buy this I will probably sell it and have quite a bit of cash to spend on it.
As you can see this is pretty tempting, but first I'm going to the DMV and get some information before I buy.

Well, just got off the phone with DMV and got all the information I needed. For the first time I had a pleasant experience with the DMV. I did not have to stand in line for 2hrs and I did not have to wait on the phone for 1hr for someone to answer my questions.
1. The dealer is legit, they are not trying to rip me off. They have like 50 cars in their lot. The thing is that they are a charity organzition. All the cars they are selling were donated to them. They don't spend the time to fixed anything wrong with the cars so they just sell them as they are. Since they tested the car and it did not pass the smog, they are merely protecting themselves by selling the vehicle out of state. If they sell the vehicle in CA they are legally obligated to have the car smoged before they can sell it. If they sell it out of state, they longer become obligated because the vehicle was sold with an out of state license, meaning the buyer bought the car with the intentions of leaving the state with the car.
2. I called DMV they told me exactly what the dealer told me. They said the only way I can buy the car is with an out of state license. However I can buy the car do the necessary work to get the car to pass smog, and once it passes I can register it here in CA and keep it here.
All I need is a person with an out of state license to help me out by signing and releasing the car from the lot, after that I will do all the repairs to get the car to pass smog and have the title transfered to my name.
sorry for writing an essay, but won't you agree this is a good deal?

for $800 and bad engine?
I`m selling mine for $100 perfectly running, one injector leaks, and you have to renew the license tag, THAT will be alot cheaper, but.. its a SOHC...

Pretty sure there is a law against dealers selling cars without smog.
Its not a good deal.

I got an idea. Register the car as a not running car. (forgot the right term for it) Buy the car like a property. (Why would DMV bother with you buying a block of metal??) Now fix the smog problem. Then reregister the car and smog it. Problem solved. Also you might be able to give the dealer this idea or tell them it's not legal to sell unsmog car blah blah and offer to buy this car as in a "not running" condition for a few hundred cheaper. :keke:

yeah monkeyspeed you sent me to it.
yes its illegal to buy a vehicle to give to somebody else. unless they are an immediate family member.
yeah technically its illegal for my to buy a car for my gf to drive. usually this law is reserved for drug dealers and stuff that get the money in illegitame ways. because this is a way to launder money.

find out who has the title of the car. then have it sold to you "as is" not running. dealership avoids law suite you get a car. if that works let me know because i think only a private seller can sell a car "as is" goodluck
