Wassup bros. I'm new to the nissan world. Im putting a HG in my s13 i just picked up. I got everything off, exhaust & intake manifold. Upper tensioner, cylinder 1 in TDC, Intake & exhaust cam 24mm bolts off. I stopped at taking the idler sprocket bolt off.

Im confused on if i should put a paper clip in the lower tensioner before i take the idle sprocket off?

Or just unscrew the bolt and take it off w/o the paper clip in the tensioner?

If you can help that'll be hella dope bro's

Is it a single cam or dual cam? I wouldn't use a paper clip, that could accidentally fall in and be really tough to get out without removing your oil pan. You pretty much have the right idea, though. Maybe use a marker to mark the gear and chain link instead. After reinstalling you will need to align the upper timing chain with the lower timing chain which can be a PITA if it's your first time, but the factory service manual on nico has all of the info you need.

Looks like a KA24E, just keep tension on the chain so it doesn't slip off the crank. Mark your cam sprocket and done.

But if you lose the crank side, you'll have to take the front cover off.

Use an actual pin, you could also put a large clamp around the gear to hold the chain into the gear teeth while the cam gear is removed. Otherwise just mark it.
