Hello guys,
New to both this forum and as a Silvia driver so please have patience with me. I should also admit that I'm Norwegian so my Enlish might not be totally understandable.
Back to the point.
I bought myself an fairly modified s14 (SR20) a few days ago and today I suddenly noticed a strange noice from the engine. Only when accelerating or when the engine is under load, in neutral the engine does NOT make this noise, neither at idle or revving. Describing the sound is a bit difficult, but it kind of reminds me of a lawn mower or a tractor of some sort. Again, kind of. The sound also sound abit metalic, but at the same time not. So to make things easier I uploaded a few videos to youtube (Listed at bottom of arthicle).
When I first heard the sound I suspected it might be something with the valves, but then again I thought it was a bit wierd since it only makes this distinctive sound under load, and not at idle or reving in neutral.
I then did some research and found out some people had problems with the timing chain guide, but again my sympthoms doesn't quite match that explanation either.
I then started to worry that the rods might have something to do with it, but again it doesn't quite add up. And the rods are pretty much newly installed.
With all that said, I do know there is an exhaust leak on the car. It hasn't really been to noticable and especially not this agressive, not even close. But if an exhaust leak has the possibility to make this kind of noice and note then I might just settle with trying to fix the leak. (Former owner told me some gaskets were missing from the exhaust). This whole thread might be a no-brainer and that the exhaust is the cause of my problem, but atleast hopefully someone could give me some experience out of this.
I have not noticed any power loss at all. I do not know what oil it is running (gonna do an oil change very soon).
Here are some relevant specs (done quite newly):
-Cosworth headgasket and cosworth gasketkit
-ACL Race rods and bearings
-Garret Gt2860rs turbo
-New manifold
-Tomei Aggesive camshafts
-Tomei Stage 3 ECU
-MAF from z32
-555 Nismo nozzle
-Walbro 255 fuel pump
-Greddy catch-tank
-AUTOBAHN88 Intercooler
There are some more mods but these are the most relevant.
Here are some vids (last one from the outside):
