So basically, my friend and I installed BC 264/264 cams in his s13 with a ka24de. We did everything as per the JWT guide and FSM specs. These cams are supposed to be "drop in", and for noobs like us, we had no idea we were supposed to adjust for valve lash until it was too late.

The cams were loud, extremely chattery, and after trying to check timing and everything else, I decided to check up on the shims and their clearances (which I would have done in the first place had I known... Trust me I read through as many threads as I could on these cams)

Low and behold only a single shim matches the .008 valve lash BC suggests :facepalm::facepalm:

Well after using feeler gauges and doing the whole schabang to figure the new shim size, we decided to drop back in the old cams so my friend isn't out of a car for a week.

Install was smooth as butter until it turned over. Loud. Chattering. Again. It sounds almost like a Cummins its so dang rackety. These were the stock cams in the same location and damn well on right timing.

Can anybody help me out? I dont want to admit its rod knock because I've heard rod knock. Maybe bent valves from extended throw? Either way this is my friends new ride and its so damn clean I'd hate for my cams to be the reason he can't drive it :-/

Sounds like fucked valves and probably pistons. No reason why the motor would be rod knocking because of that.

Would cams with improper valve lash cause that? This is my first experience outside of stock valve-train. is it possible the clatter is from the valves not being able to close in time for spark? I hate to think worst case

Sounds like you didn't install the timing chain correctly. The valve lash shouldn't have caused a huge change in the sound of the engine.
I threw bc 264s in my engine and didn't check valve lash and it was fine for over two years. I just put tomei valve springs in a coupe days ago and still didn't touch valve lash and the car is running fine

I thought maybe the chain was off a link as well, should I take off the timing cover and set everything again at TDC compression stroke?

And to anyone who knows, the KA24DE he has is out of an s14, or at least a later model s13, its an 89 s13. The cams that came with the car had yellow on the intake, and a peach on the exhaust. (At least thats the orientation theyre in now, the sprocket guide matches up with the first lobe on the intake so I assumed thats right..)

If the timing chain was off a link, it would have been so from the start, we marked them and matched during both the BC install and stock.

Thanks for helping out guys, ill update tomorrow with more diagnostics and see where im at. If worse comes to worst I guess its time for headwork a spring kit and some valves :p

All is fun when learning new things :D
