View Full Version : How to "pass" smog with a SR20DET?

Hey guys I recently purchased a 240sx s13 with a sr20det swapped engine and I was too eager about finally getting a 240sx to realize that it does not comply with CA emissions tests.
That said, I am wondering if there's anyway for it to "pass" emissions even if a little risk is needed! (do not want to part w/ the car) :fawkd:
I know that the sr20det is an illegal engine and there is no possible way for it to pass smog in CA no matter what (legally), I understand that much.
So now I come to the forums looking for any hookups or advice you all can provide me with, I live in San Diego btw. :naughty:
PM me personal info for the sake of privacy and comment with advice down below. Please don't flame me too much, thanks! :hsdance:

Some smog shops do test run for $20 without sending out the results. This way you can see where you at and which ones doesn't pass.

I would try that but even if I pass emissions part I would still fail the visual inspection, you know because of the JDM motor... :ugh:
Thanks for the reply. :coolugh:

Go out and make friends. Ask this question in person, not on a forum. What you are asking for is "illegal"
Someone will help you out, just not on a forum

In general any car can do testing first. Why not? Its a Japanese car. Unless if you swap american V8 into JDM car it wont pass visual inspection.
u can pass any emission test with proper catalist and mapping.

maybe you guys aren't in CA, but even if the tailpipe emissions are 100% flawless, you will STILL fail the VISUAL portion of the inspection, since that engine was never sold in the US in a emissions legal configuration.
and dwnshift2drft what are you talking about "American v8 into jdm car" won't pass??? do you not know about the 100% LEGAL E-rod LS engine swap package?
Peter Tarach from Modified magazine did a huge build thread/article series about them putting a 100% smog legal LS engine in his s13.

I've seen this before on a honda swap with jdm type r motor and BARed it no problems. The problem was BAR inspector was looking for a MAF sensor near the air filter other wise they wont accept it, dummy dint know honda don't have them near the filter. They don't know everything.

#1 You can not smog an Sr20 legally in Cali it will fail. #2 You can only pass the visual inspection. I'm saying this because I did it all they do is check vin numbers on the chassis to see if they match your pink and reg. When I did the inspection it was an old lady who looked like she didn't know anything about cars or modifications. Doesn't mean every inspector is the same so there is a chance someone out there can still red flag your car if they want to be dick.

Nothing wrong passing a smog with sr20det as long as you have all the emission in tacked. The only bad part here is the EPA don't want your SR20 in California.
Emission parts for SR20 are rare especially the s14 & s15 are. Only one I've seen in Hayward CA s14/s15 intake manifold with EGR stock. Might be Euro spec?
