I recently picked up a s13 shell, when I got it home and looked under it the subframe was welded to the chassis...is there a reason for this? is it beneficial in any way or should I cut it out and replace?

Sounds unnecessary when solid bushings would pretty much eliminate any play in the subframe.
Does it still have rubber bushings?

Sounds like someone just went the quick cheap route and tacked it.
Got any pics?

I really hope I have a picture on my phone now. I am deployed so if I don't you guys might have to wait a few days until I can get someone to go snap a pic. From the sounds of all of these comments there is not an advantage to this. When I get it off and either put a new one on if it gets trashed or use that one if salvageable, should I just run the solid mounts or is there more to it?

Have fun getting that thing off. If you rip a stud out you're fucked lol.

I hoped they just tracked it on. For God's sake 😂😂

well damn I never thought of that part....surely there is a fix if that happens other than the hoodrat decision to weld it.

That can be salvaged.

you buy this in the country? Seems a "dirt track" kind of mod. Gotta respect american ingenuity when it comes to saving a buck. :picardfp:

Cool so definitely cut it and put solid bushings in? Yes I bought it in the us as a non rolling shell for $200. It should be a fun project as long as I don't find too many more of this nonsense.

Oh this is straight up some redneck engineering shit. Hope it's just plates welded, and not welded because the bolt is snapped or rusted to hell and rounded off.

I really hope so too. My thoughts are that it was a kid that thought it would make the rearend super solid or some shit. The chassis harness was the biggest hack wiring I have ever seen but I have only found 3 spots of rust on it and the frames were perfect.

If it were me, I'd cut the plates, drop the subframe, clean up the body and frame, paint all the things, add poly bushings.

Leave the adjustable arms? They are either Megan or eBay.

Your call. Replace what you want now, or wait. Easier to swap parts when the frame is out.

If it is a broken stud I got some spares

Hope it's just plates welded, and not welded because the bolt is snapped or rusted to hell and rounded off.

This was my first thought: some kind of damage to the stud. Snapped, stripped threads, rotting off etc.

just a heads up but a snapped stud is fixable, just did it in my car last week. wasnt fun but not all is lost.

i am surprised that someone thought that back woods, beaver tooth, hill billy fix would actually work

looks like one good launch would snap that. cut that shit off with a grinder and rebuild the subframe proper
