I have a CEL. When I hook a scan tool to the obd2 port, on passenger side left of the glove box I can't read the code, but I can clear it. Anyone else have this issue? I have read so many threads that say that my car doesn't have obd2 because it's a 95 but I assure you, it does. Why would I be able to get power from the port, delete codes, but not read them? It also has a port by the fuse box, drivers side kick panel, I don't have a tool to plug into it. I know I can pull codes from the ecu but I want to know why I can't communicate fully through the obd2 port.

Most likely because your car was the first year they came out with obd2 (well 96 but you most likely have a late model 95 hence the obd2 port)
You most likely need to use the port by your fuse box to read your codes...

That is the reason people recommend not to ever buy a 95 or 96 car... obd2 issues

I'll probably end up just counting blinks on the ecu. Does anyone know why this issue occurs?

Your car is not OBD2. Many vehicles had those data link connectors before the requirement of OBD2. Cars weren't required to comply with OBD2 protocols until '96. Before that, car manufactures could use whatever communication systems and protocols they pleased. That's why generic scan tools won't work properly on pre '96 cars.

The data link connector is used for vehicle communications but it's presence is not an indication of OBD2.

If your car was sold and registered as a '95, it is not OBD2.
If your car was sold and registered as '96+ it is OBD2.
It's that simple.

Then why does it have an obd2 port? It's weird they would just put that port there, power it and allow me to delete codes but not pull them.

It's not an OBD2 port. There is no such thing. It's a data link connector. It can be used to communicate with Nissan scan tools even if the vehicle isn't using OBD2 protocols.
