KA-T DRIFT BUILD PART 1

A few weeks ago we were brought a KA-T S13 with a laundry list of parts we were going to be installing, as well as plans for a bit of love and normal maintenance here and there. However, the more we dug into the car on the initial tear down, the more we found that needed to be fixed and replaced. No big deal, this was a 25 year old car that was seemingly put together on a tight budget by the previous owner. On the hand, the current owner bought it knowing what needed to be done and how he wanted the car to look and perform, so he brought it to us to fulfill his vision! The first order of business was pulling out the previously boosted KA and checking on its overall condition.

Well hello there! We have a bent rod.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/268/32709940546_d9c031a7fc_b.jpg
This KA was definitely in need of a rebuild and top to bottom refresh.

The chassis itself was a bit on the rough side as well. The frame rails were mostly smashed in…

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/489/32751030215_9e7f259b3b_b.jpg
… or missing!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/748/32751029565_0d2ac78ecd_b.jpg
The waste gate piping was worth mentioning. Very interesting design…

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/682/32751030805_b18c151404_b.jpg
The floorboard had patches of rust as well, this was the worst bit where you could clearly see the carpet through the “floor”.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/450/32751031385_50384bb36d_b.jpg
There was extensive rust on the original chassis so we contacted the owner and planned to re-shell, moving everything we could salvage from the old car onto a new chassis. This way the car would be safe, in better shape than when it came, and would be less prone to problems in the future.

A few things that were salvaged off of the old shell to be installed on the new one!

A fresh steering rack and tie rods ready for the new shell.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/443/31907783074_739f2274a9_b.jpg
Clean! No rust on the shell that everything will be swapped over to.

Perks of being a Florida car, no salt on the roads. We did however find a massive damn spider under the car… Cons of being a Florida car. NOPE.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/564/32751034345_596e6d1984_b.jpg
Solid.

KA-T DRIFT BUILD PART 2

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/532/32751027835_ff47cfdfe7_b.jpg

Back on track with the KA-T S13 drift build, the engine was mostly tied up and assembled in the first part of our build documentation. What was left on the engine was waiting for the turbo to arrive, tap the oil pan for the oil lines to the turbo, and modify the S13 intake manifold. Chassis wise, we’re going to be installing the hydraulic e-brake, coilovers and installing the engine!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/306/32630814511_18ef2fd3d0_b.jpg
The S15 T28 ball bearing turbo sits nicely on the Tomei Expreme manifold!

Cool turbo sounds, awaiting..

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/730/32630815251_4a7e7faaae_b.jpg
We ordered a fresh oil pan from Nissan for the perfect fit, then welded this bung onto it for the oil return line for the turbo!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/406/31911229094_85bba19b74_b.jpg
Everything lined up!

Prepping the S13 intake manifold for a bit of welding!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/437/32630817681_2f43ee7374_b.jpg
If you didn’t know, the S13 KA24DE manifold has butterfly valves built in it to help with low end torque. When the S14 rolled around and replaced the S13, they opted to get rid of the butterfly valves. Instead of us getting another manifold from an S14, we decided to convert the S13 manifold and weld the holes in the runner closed.

All bolted on.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/661/31940134293_6270c61e86_b.jpg
All that remains is to bolt on the transmission and then the engine will be ready to be dropped in its new home!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/760/31940144893_ef7704d0f3_b.jpg
We transferred over the Z32 TT calipers that were on the original shell, only to find out they were completely seized. Rough! So we used them as cores to get a set of fresh re-manufactured calipers.

The engine is in! Along with the intake manifold, we replaced all of the vacuum lines underneath the manifold with new hoses as well as brand new NISMO 550CC injectors.

The car will be sitting on Stance XR1 suspension, with inverted monotube front dampers for extra strength for the MacPherson style suspension on the front.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/736/31911239644_ae82f9447b_b.jpg

With MacPherson style suspension, the shock sees side load during use. Inverted monotube dampers are used because the shock body/casing is much stronger and can withstand the forces, while a non-inverted/ upright damper would be putting all that force on the piston shaft and seals, which can bend from excessive force from Gs or hitting chicanes/curbs/potholes etc. Also, the main body of the damper isn’t enclosed in the threaded damper casing which allows heat to dissipate more efficiently and perform more precisely than conventional upright dampers. It’s a no brainer!

It is just so the brake line cant rub on the metal and holds it in place and acts as a weather seal. It looks to be some sort of window urethane.

Thanks for the input, the silicone will provide a much better seal against dirt and water over a grommet. We have been using this method for years on different cars and it has not failed us once.

This post will be our last project update for this car! It has come along way in its time here at TF, from a whole chassis swap to a built KA-T set up, to a full upgrade on the suspension and chassis. If you haven't been following the build up to now, be sure to check out PART 1 and PART 2. At the end of the last update, we had just dropped the engine in and starting to hook up all of the plumbing:

I wouldn't be advising bolting the harness that low in the back as being "maximum" safety. Also If you flip a car with harness' and no cage, you cant duck when the roof collapses, but to each their own for what you consider safe. Either way its a beautiful car and you guys did a great job, very detailed.

Nice project, I enjoyed reading through the details in each step and ir was a job very well done. I didn't see any mention of a catch can setup - what are you doing for the oil recirculating?

I was skeptical at first when I Saw the harnesses, and when I asked about it I was educated on how how Takata instructs harnesses to be be mounted that way at that angle when there is not a cage in the car. If you'd like to view those instructions, I can upload them here. The owner is planning on having us build him a cage in the next off season, so even more safety benefits will be added.

I must've forgotten to photograph it, you can see the lines running to the catch can towards the driver side of the radiator, we used this one here: http://www.tf-works.com/circuit-sports-480cc-oil-catch-tank-w-breather-filter/

The heat shield is made out of steel, and is the circuit sports brand wrapped in DEI gold heat tape. You can buy the heat shields here:

The main piping has a diameter of 80mm, about 3.15 inches.

The spring is not too hard. The BOV sounds fluttery because the car was being driven under very light load, so the BOV wasn't opening all the way.

Unfortunately, we don't have any outside sound clips of the exhaust. But if your going to USAIR this weekend, he's going to be ripping it this Saturday.

It sounds really good.... like really good. lol

Only down fall on the exhaust is that it sits pretty darn low. Not low car friendly whatsoever. Great quality, and great sounding exhaust though. Perfect for the dudes that aren't trying to go super lower.

Car is actually back on schedule for a full oval pipping exhaust system next week! I'll be sure to post a clip of that. And a clip of the Tomei exhaust before it gets taken away..

Change of plans, no oval pipping. Just a custom 3in SS exhaust.

And yes, would be stainless. Oval titanium pipping would cost an arm and a leg and maybe a liver. Would love to see someone do that though.. lol
