I did a search but could not find the answer I was looking for. How difficult is it to install the rear subframe in a 90 240. can it be done by a regular mechanic or should it be done by a body shop? thanks

assuming your swapping it out you have to drop the differential, exhaust, control arms, etc. its pretty straight forward, only tricky part is supporting the brakes if you dont want to rebleed them.

If I had to do it all over again...
Jack the car up, put jack stands on the frame rail i the rear.
Remove exhaust at cat
Remove wheels, remove brake caliper from knuckles, disconnect ebrake cable from brake calipers
Disconnect drive shaft from differential, I think its easier to remove the diff and the subframe all at once. You can't pickup the subframe by yourself, and having the diff there gives you a nice jack point to push the whole unit back up into place.
Supporting the subframe with a jack under the diff, remove the subframe adjustment straps, then remove the subframe bolts.
Lower the subframe.
It was alot easier to torque the suspension arms in place with the subframe off when I had replace my subframe.
