Awwwww, another thread about money started by a millennial, your guy's favorite!

Anyways I'd like some realistic opinions from the community that's known for being kind and informat- oh... sorry just realized this was Zilvia disregard that.

As the title states in your opinion whats the best "new to you" car to get for 20k now a days? Keep in mind where talking daily drivers, so comments of "just spend it all on a 240 will not be considered (we all know that this is a bad idea, because you end up with a sentimental money pit) We're talking more in the neighborhood of today's hot hatches and lack luster coupes with good gas mileage and reliability.

I bought a practically brand new 2015 Honda CRZ with 6k miles for $18k out the door at the beginning of this year.
It really makes a great daily, and fun canyon car.
It got 48 mpg on a trip to Las Vegas, has super low insurance because it's classified as a hybrid, comes pretty well equipped, and has very neutral handling with throttle lift oversteer.
The 2013-up also come with the S+ system which is basically KERS.
It also has a huge storage area capable of swallowing big loads.
Best of all? It can be had with a really great manual transmission.

in 2013 i bought my mint 2011 civic Si Sedan for a little over 19k. I was looking for cars that were 4 doors (future family car capable) and still fun to drive. 4 door Sis and Legacy's were my top 2 choices. Its a fun car to drive with plenty of room in the back.

Agreed. I too have a CRZ. bought an '11 with 28k miles for $14k in 2014. Probably about $10k now. Awesome that its a 6-speed manual. Not the fastest acceleration, but its fun to floor it all the time in sport mode. Very well balanced and corners like a champ. Brakes like a champ. oil life is something like 6 months/ 15000 miles. gas mileage is rediculous and insurance is cheap. Get a newer model with rear and side view cameras. The blindspots suck, but not a dealbreaker. The stock sound system in the EX model is actually fucking awesome with just a little 8" sub. Interior is roomy, but lacks a back seat even though there's space for one.
I love my CRZ. best daily I've ever had.

Also just bought the old lady a '16 civic for <$20k. Excellent value.

Along with what Yuri said, I had a 2011 Honda CR-Z, with the six speed manual transmission. Drove it to vegas for SEMA and averaged 45 miles per gallon with my sticky tires and BBS's. Would average a little more with my stock 16's. Fantastic car and I regret getting rid of it. Storage was pretty good, was able to fit an S13 bolt in cage in it to deliver to a customer.

After that I had a 2012 Civic SI sedan, very roomy, K series, great interior, navigation, whole 9 yards. Was quick (not fast), great trans, and looked good.

I did test drive a 8th gen (06-11) SI sedan before I bought that, and I wish I went that route. K20 was a lot more peppy then the K24 in the 9th. 9th had a better interior, but the 8th was the better "daily driver but still awesomely fun" car.

So. I've never bought a "new" car before. And by new I mean making a payment on a car. I've always payed cash but the most expensive one I ever bought was 6,500 for a 97 Prelude in 2007 that I blew up shortly after being a boy racer...

I'm honestly wary of having a car payment, and it's probably unwarranted. But I've been considering it as of late. I've got my "track/project" 240. When I retired it from daily duties in 2014 I built a 91 EF Civic for a fun daily. Got bored with that as I basically did a full build over a year since it was cheap as hell to upgrade, and sold it to buy my current daily, a 92 240sx LE Coupe virgin automatic... Woo. I'm mechanically inclined enough to handle daily driving an older car that needs maintenance more frequently. But now that I've matured a bit and make a bit more money, I feel like I deserve something nicer maybe?

Now I'm bored with the daily 240 and keep having this thought in the back of my head that I should just get a "new" car on a payment plan.
Talk me into or out of it :)

Personally I'd go with a Subaru Forester 2.5 XT Sports Turbo and lower it (wish we got the STi version). LOVE how that thing looks

You can also probably get a '13-'14 Fiesta ST for around 20k. i work with someone who has a '14 and it's a peppy hot hatch with great gas mileage. yes Ford, but it's a well done car. same with the newer Focus ST's.

Or wait till the prices on the new 1.5T Civics come down and get yourself manual (the CVT auto sucks ass). the aftermarket support for those cars will get intense in the coming months. (plus, fun fact; Seibon featured a full prototype kit for the sedan at SEMA that was absolutely bonkers)

Would be nice I'm sure. My uncle payed in full when he bought his 2014 Silverado brand new from the dealership for over 40k... It took him since his early 20's to save up that money since he swore he'd own a new truck some day and would pay cash...
I'm not trying to save up for that long haha.

I saw a Fiesta ST in front of me yesterday and got to hear it leave a stop light, little car sounded pretty awesome.

1.5T civic is really peaking my interest as well. 6mt of course.

My daily commute is just too much to justify some of the cars I'd like to replace the 240 with. Besides the fact that car notes SUCK, nothing new currently appeals to me. Hell if my commuting miles were in the single digits, I'd be daily driving somthing from the late 60s/early 70s! '66 Chevelle with an LS swap for now, and another one with a big block once the wife graduates.lol

But on topic, WRX 'blobeyes' are cool.

My next car is planned to be either an imported Legacy B4 wagon, or a '98-'02 Stagea 250 RS Four-S (280 horse, AWD, manual trans and an RB25DET.
I want a wagon because I like to be able to haul crap in the back (you wont believe how much crap I've fit in my Z before) and I want AWD for the bit of snow we get on the west coast of Canada. 280 horse is nice too. Half the drift kids have RB's and parts for RB's so the RB25 is relatively easy to work on for me.
Also both are priced easily under 10 for a minty one with 40-60k miles. (60-100k kilometers)

car payments are for suckers. If I can pay in full, I do.

Considering how low interest rates are, dropping $20k cash on a car is iditoic when that can be invested or used to pay off higher interest debts like student loans, credit cards and medical bills. That type of cash can also be used for a down payment on a home because "renting is for suckers".

See this at work all the time. Plenty of clients paying $40-50k cash. I get the whole not wanting to owe thing, but when you can be making more money investing that type of cash, it's kind of stupid to not take advantage of subvented rates and putting that money to work.

Currently DD'ing a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport. $40k MSRP with all the added factory options. I've had it for a little over a year now and probably going to switch out of it in the next few months for a 4runner TRD Pro or something of that sort.

Sticking with a practical daily in the $20k range, Infiniti G37 4-door in the somewhat "luxury" line. For fuel economy, Lexus CT or a Prius (if you could bring yourself to doing that).

I personally stick with leasing. I have multiple cars to switch around in which helps keep the miles down, it's pretty convenient in terms of maintenance (just about everything covered for the duration of my lease), and being in the car business helps in finding the best deals.

Having crunched the numbers quite a few times, it doesn't cost me a ton more to continue leasing cars. Definitely nice to drive something new every year or two.

Not to mention you can drop 20K on a car then minutes later somebody could run a light and wreck it. You are basically assed out as insurance still paying value of vehicle.

In the real world if I had 20K, no way in hell I'd blow it on a car. I'd pay off all debt minus student loans and take the other 14K, get a loan from a bank for around 9K, ad 4K to it from the 14K. Take the other 10K and let it sit in a bank somewhere.

A good insurance company pays out what it's worth. If you paid $20k and 5 minutes latter get hit, you should get $20k.

Never put money down on a lease however. You won't get that money back since you don't own the vehicle.

Key words there. Plus I mean more of lets say a year later or sometimes even 6 months later. Plus insurance pays on value based on general price not one's personal sales price. If you put 20K down on a 50K car worth 30K (extreme example I know). Your insurance will pay 30K and you will be assed out.

I had a lady put 27K down on a car she bought for like 44K. When we value it at like 31K she was pissed. Until I showed her another dealership like 20 miles from where she bought hers, that had a car 2 years newer, with less miles and the exact same options as hers for $35K.

She had an interest that was in excess of 6% on a 72 month loan for a car older than 2009.

Agreed on the lease thing. At work all the time i have to explain to people how their total loss on the lease they don't get shit because they are not the owner of the vehicle.

I am not the lease type. I get it for some, like Johnny's example but me, no thanks. I'd rather drive something for 15+ years. Hell I would STILL be dailying the S14 if the KA had not crapped out on me.

To address the price posts, the reasoning to spending so much is simply that as I stated I'm a millennial, meaning that unless I've been banging out penny stocks I don't have 20k cash to spend, but I do have good credit and 20k is the price point for many used cars less than 5 years old that you can still get a reasonable loan for.

Go to a credit union. 2-4% interest and you can finance anything up to 110% of its book value.

Terms are normally under $10k is less then 48 months. Over $15k 60-72 months.

My experience has been the big federal ones are the unions to use.

NASA Federal Credit Union
Navy Federal Credit Union
USAA

Locals/Regional can be hit or miss.

But they'll always be better then comparable banks.

5/3 Bank valued a Evo 9 at like $8k when my buddy talked to them. It's like, okay I'll buy 6 at that price please.

KBB lists a Evo 9 at $22-28k.

Last of the 4Gs.

If I can buy anything and pay less then 5% interest over years and years with nothing but build credit why the fuck not. Paying in full does 0 but empty it put bank account

Some people absolutely do not like having money held over their head and they're financial/credit situation might allow it.

I'm not saying I'm a lending expert, but those reasons make sense to me.

Credit Unions? PSCHHHTTTT!!! You guys are a bunch of saps. Spending a large wad of cash on a depreciating item is for suckers!!!!

Alright. got out all my economics 101 banter.

For a usable, reliable coupe that is good/decent on gas, I'd go G37. I'm 6'3" and over 300lbs and it(G35) had enough room for me and my stuff (not including family). I imagine you're single and significantly smaller so you should be good. Plus, it's a Nissan in uppity clothing, so you're good there.

For a fun hatch, Focus ST>Fiesta ST for spacing and utility. Fiesta ST>fOCUS ST for fun factor.
Honda CRZ is good for...whatever Hondas do. So, there's that.

and just in case I wasn't being sarcastic (i was, but just in case I wasn't)

Does a Japanese luxury car depreciate more than something else? Did I miss something?

Why yes, yes they do!

They depreciate faster then their economy cousins. Luxury cars in general depreciate damn fast. G35's are like $3,500 cars these days.

Buying new, you can't go wrong with a Wrangler, Tacoma or 4Runner.

So, what you're saying is that he should get a 370Z instead of the G37 because it won't depreciate as fast? I ask, because the OP asked about a coupe or hatch..which is why I recommended a coupe...and hatches....and not things that weren't coupe or hatches. And G35's that are like 3500 are private party with well over 100k clicks on the odo. Not that the G35 is really relevant to what i was saying as I only referenced in for sizing purposes. But, just so we're all on the same page.

Can confirm. Insurance adjuster, luxury cars depreciate really fast. Had a 2013 7 Series Bmw total in 2014 for 99K. Had a 2013 7 series BmW total in late 2015 for like 42K.

3's series can be had for 11-14k off msrp in only a few years.

My pops in law offer perspective on this. He said most people who want and can afford luxury cars don't want them used, so when they become used they basically get sold to people who could not afford them new, greatly reducing the sales price.

For instant in GA it black people (shut people I'm black too) love to snap up 5-7 Series BMW's once they get 2-4 years off the current year.

Case in point

While of course option wise the cars may not be exact, still you can see the massive differences in price based on year.

You're saying things that EVERYONE DOES!!! It's not just GA and it's not just black people. Italians do that too lol. Italians in NY.

And "can't afford" isn't the same as don't want to pay for. My ex's Dad bought his ex-wife a used SL55 AMG because he didn't want to spend the money on a new one. But, he could 100% afford one though.

edit he's black so I guess that didn't bode well for my point. But..wel...nurrrmine

Corbic, just curious - Is there a reason why when you mention newer daily drivers/trucks, you always talk about the Tacoma but never mention the Frontier... Why is that?

Just get a 1st gen IS300. They're cheap, bulletproof and comfortable.

live cheap and save money for multi-family income properties. Don't be the 99% that buy expensive, depreciating cars to satisfy a false perception that it's going to make your life better. Car payments suck. Plus, when your dog or friend pukes, shits or performs some other disgusting act in your car you won't be as mad because it's a cheap daily beater.

Frontier is a colossal piece of shit?

I just don't like them. Cheaper metal, cheaper interior, smaller aftermarket and ugly as shit.

Resale is also horrible.

I don't know about their rust or frame issues. I like the SMC bed on the Tacoma.

I had a Frontier once. Worst truck I've ever had.

Aside from the mountain of drivetrain issues it had, the interior and design is so outdated.

Bought the truck with a new OEM replacement motor done at a Nissan store. Only lasted about a year and a half of regular use before the motor developed issues...again.

Tacoma's have their problems, too (like any other car), but resale value is insane.

Made $3k back in equity when I traded out of my previous Tacoma and into my current one. Already in a position of equity in my current truck as well.

My dad and brother have frontiers. Both have had issues that required dealer fixes. Both ride like crap. And both get worse gas mileage than my Silverado. And it has the 4.8(no cylinder deactivation), a 4 spd auto(not the 6), and a shorter rear gear(3.27 vs 3.08). Avg 16 mpg. 20 hwy if I leave the ac off. Not bad for something as aerodynamic as a cinder block.

370z hands down. I have had three 240's, a miata, a g35, and I have never been happier with how a car handles and performs, looks and feels, for the price.

Holy crap, I had no idea it was that bad. And are you guys talking about the D40 Frontier with the VQ40 engine? Geez.

If so, I guess I'll just get an F150 or some chevy truck.

The VQ40DE, basically the vq35de with .5 more displacement. I knew the vq line was pretty flawed but i didn't know the frontier caught the big that damn bad.
