Ok so i recently got my 240 and my headlights dont retract Ive seen many posts so dont tell me to search please. 1. the headlights go down manually. 2. They only go up if I turn on the brights. 3. The headlights do go down if i manually put them a little past half way. 4. The headlight button only brings them up. Any info is helpful ty

There is a button to the left/right of the steering wheel (mine was RHD) on the dash, press it

You own an economy car built in the 90's, the headlight motors sound like they're on there way out. Mine never worked so I just always kept them up.

They work because they go up, also they go down if i put the half way down and pop them up, they go down then back up

Works 20% of the time all of the time.

Besides "having cool flip up headlights" is there a reason that the up and down movement is important to you?

lol, no offense, but you can't figure out how to make your headlights go down...

Maybe, it is the switch stuck in a normally open / closed condition? Do you have a multi-meter? Check your steering column / switch? Did you change out anything or try to troubleshoot?

Thanks for telling us they go down manually... that really helps our troubleshooting... no offence

I'm hoping you're not literally that dense. He stated they go down when put half way down then opened back up.

He should be telling you thanks for offering no solution mixed with insults.

it sounds stupid but it is an old car, have you checked all your fuses inside? had an issue similar to this and a simple probably unrelated fuse change was the remedy.

Thank you, and ya i did check the fuse and relays the weird thing is though is when i checked the fuse it had a 20 amp fuse in there so i thought that was the problem but when i threw a 5a fuse in, nothing changed.

And you've checked the TCU? an unplugged or bad grounded TCU can also cause this.

Probably bad motors. I thought the same thing - "they go up fine, can't be the motors". 1 year later swapped the motor and problem solved.

jesus this is a train wreck

first off the reason the motors go all the way down then back up when you adjust them halfway is because the headlight motors don't turn backwards, the up/down movement is all from the motor turning one direction, the motor is internally regulated at the up and down position 180 degrees from each other, after so many degrees of turning the motor forward by hand it jumps all the way back around to the up position because the down position is not working.

now then the reason the down position is not working can literally be such a vast variety of things on these cars that its honestly very rarely worth fucking with it, however I would start with turning the light switch off and break out a multimeter and see where you have power on the headlight motor plug and the headlight switch, there is an up signal and a down signal, the first thing to do is see if your still receiving an up signal with the headlights off or if your just not receiving a down signal.

second, there are (I believe) 6-8 relays for headlight retractors in our cars (that might be an exaggeration but there are definitely at least 4) lots of redundancies and useless circuits for what should be a simple operation

now for what I think may be the problem, so by your first post what I gather is that the headlights will not go up unless you hit the brights or press the button and they will not go down on their own at all? if that's the case I personally would start with a new combination switch, the brights portion of the switch is a different unit from the lights on and off portion which would make sense for why the brights turn them on and not the headlights, after that I would check relays, I have seen the headlight switches go bad from people improperly installing HID lighting (using the power drawn through the switch to trigger the igniters and supply power to the ballasts rather than direct battery power through the fused source or using a relay) the bad switch then in turn burns out various relays or fuses

I have given you the tools, bring me the results

It's the motors brother. I once had the exact same scenario. I replaced the motors and the problem was solved. Don't make this more complicated than what it already is.
