View Full Version : [SR-Z] My SR20DET Z32 Build
[SR-Z]
Wassup Zilvia! Recently finished up my S13 build and decided to move on to another chassis and go all out.
A little over a month ago I traded my trusty Lexus GS300 daily driver for this beautiful 93 Z32. Massive come up considering the Z was completely stock with right under 90k original miles super clean in and out. It was cleaner than my old Z32 and S13 which solidified my ideas of using it as my new base for a build.
The Z32 suffers from having a heavy, sluggist V6 under the hood. In N/A form, these cars are complete turds. I plan to fix that and lighten the car up at the same time by swapping an SR20 into it. I've always wanted to do this swap and I actually have a car worthy of it, so lets get this rolling!

Threw my old FN's on it and really liked the combo, FN's look great on just about anything though. The monster truck height bothered me quite a bit, but I drove it as is for a bit.

Found a local who was selling a set of Powertrix Road/Track coilovers, unfortunately they had 7k/5k springs on them, but it suited daily driving well so I decided to leave them alone and slap them in. Car looked 10x better with a moderate drop.

At this point I had pretty much decide on dropping an SR20DET into the car. Getting rid of the VG was at the top of my to do list, but I wasn't going to rush anything. The swap was going to be done once and done right, I didn't want to be tearing it back apart once it was put together if I didn't have to. Lets get this started!

Glad to also see people giving the Z32 a chance. It has it's quirks but it's a good looking chassis that with enough work and planning could be a viable chassis!

Nice!
What swap kit will you be using with this?? THis is something I have considered considering how cheap clean 300ZXs have become!
you have no idea how fun this car is going to be, take your time and make it clean glad this swap is becoming more popular.
I've heard it makes the chassis incredibly nimble and lively. I love how the car handles now, but you can definitely tell there is a lot of weight up front. I'm going to do everything right the first time so I can enjoy the car, I don't like the idea of cutting corners and worrying about having to replace things down the road.

I got into modifying cars with a Z32, I loved the car, but the VG eventually drove me away. I won't let that happen again and hopefully be able to build a car that is fast, nimble and dependable.

There is a guy who can makes these beautiful billet aluminum motor mount adapters that let you just drop the motor in. the drivetrain will remain the same other than the motor though, these cars don't suffer from issues S13's have snapping axles or killing transmissions.

I've done this swap a few times already, the car def handles much better i want to say it feels much like an FD with this swap. I'm actually using an S14SR20 with a CD0009 trans on my car. Link to my build thread 2JZ VVTI Z32 Build Thread (http://zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=606206) if you have any questions I'll be more than happy to help since i've been down this rodeo a few times.
If the adapters I'm thinking about are the ones you are talking about that you bolt the motor mount on to the cross member then bolt on that adapter to the motor mount bracket and drop it in I would highly recommend making your own mount brackets. That person's mount kit changes the leverage point on the mounts and pretty much compromises the entire mount structure on the long run. (unless you use solid alloy mounts), he got pretty butthurt at me and blocked me from his FB and the "Light weight" Z32 page after i denied using his mounts and posted pictures of my progress.
I managed to run a 1:57.5xxx at AutoClub speed way with the factory engine, head & turbo only upgrade was STi injectors & GTR MAF (with dyno tuning on 91) your car is going to be an absolute riot with the GT3076R I can't wait to see what your cars finished product will be.

I've following your build for quite some time! A friend and I were talking a few years back about swaps and the SR really got me excited, but I was younger and dumb so I couldn't really make it happen ahaha.
I never though about those adapters screwing with how the mounts are suppose to work, but I see what you mean. They distribute the weight all wrong and will probably end up killing the mounts really quick. Only issue with making my own mounts is I don't have the right tools to make them.
I will definitely be shooting you a PM, I would love to ask you some questions!

Yeah they essentially change the leverage point to where the engine is prying the mounts appart every time you get on throttle rather than putting weight on them. What seems like a good idea becomes really bad if you have some common sense. The quality of the machine and welds looks good though.

I am all about making a production run to help these guys but not enough commitment to make it happen. atleast not something I would be willing to put my name on.

Thanks! Stay tuned for much much more!

The only issue with making a kit for this is the extra effort that goes into dropping this motor into a Z32. Its not like all the JZ's, RB's and LS's into Schassis vehicles, the Z is a bit more limited on space. The stock motor is rear sump instead of front sump so crossmember modification is required and most people who swap Z's keep the original transmission which means the kit would more than likely need to be much much more than just a set of mounts.

I totally agree with you about there not being enough people out there right now who want this swap. Most Z32 owners love the VG because you can do breather mods and make 500rwhp and 500rwtq on a stock motor with stock turbos. The DETT swap is cheap and easy where as swapping an SR in right now is tedious.
I hope my swap will make more want to do it. I received mostly positive feedback on a local based Z32 Facebook page recently, other than a few hating on the SR in general. Most Z owners see an SR as just a little 4 cyl that isn't worth a damn. Making them see past that is going to take a lot of work, but I hope my car will be an eye opener for Z guys who don't want to go the DETT route.

Back at it again with a legit build
Shout out to Future240 for cleaning this thread up, back to business!
Suspension has and will always be my first priority when it comes to building a car, if you're driving a car with 25 year old rubber bushings all around you're looking for trouble. Front upper control arms are necessary for going low, only good option is Powertrix and they are insanely nice parts. Shout out to Charles over at Powertrix for hooking me up with the latest version of the adjuster collars for them. Great adjuster design, threw some anti-seize on them to make sure they stay easy to adjust.

My S13 got the full Voodoo13 catalog and was great, but I decided to go with GKTech this time around. GKTech has a much better adjuster and their parts are very reasonably priced, win win. Tension rods are on the car at the moment, but I have basically every other arm waiting to be installed along with solid subframe and diff bushings. Fun fact, the Z32 shares most suspension components with the S13.

My front rotors were cracked and worn to shit, the only reasonable and responsible thing to to was to buy a BBK. Decided to support a local, Arizona ZCar, and grabbed his front 4 pot Wilwood, 13in 2pc rotor kit. Super nice overall, fit and finish is great and the setup is significantly lighter than iron Z calipers/1pc rotors. Also threw some Stoptech rear slotted rotors, Stoptech sport pads and Centric braided lines out back. Fantastic combo overall, huge improvement over what was on the car...

The SR adventure begins
I was able to pickup an SR locally that was completely built with some great parts for next to nothing, invoices I was given with the motor showed over $10k in parts/work that were put into it. It was disgusting, caked in atf from a power steering blowout, but that can be cleaned up. Outline of what the motor had in it/done to it:
Ported/Polished S13 SR20DET head
BC Valve Springs/Retainers
BC272 Cams
Cometic Head Gasket
ARP Head Studs
ARP Main Studs
CP 8.5:1 Pistons
Eagle Rods
ACL Bearings
Balanced Rotating Assembly

Sadly when something is cheap, its usually too goo to be true. Motor was sold to me as "drop in ready" but I had to tear into it. Found some wonderful things inside... First was this sick nasty modified oil pickup, who ever drilled these holes should be smacked, such a stupid fucking idea... Also, who needs to replace gaskets when you can just CAKE everything in red RTV, blows my mind...

https://i.imgur.com/gVnGZpAh.jpg
Got further in and man was I glad I tore it down. Cylinder walls had some scoring, nothing crazy deep, but not what you want to see. Rod bearing and journal #1 looked like shit, probably thanks to that sick oil pickup mod. Hopefully the crank can be saved. No bearings were spun which is great, but it does need a full refresh before its drop in ready.

Sucks the motor needs work, but that cool. I'd rather have a fresh motor to beat on anyway. No worries, picked up a ton of cool shit to bolt to it once its back together! No shortcuts will be taken with this build, nothing but quality parts will be installed on this engine. ATi Super Damper was at the top of my "to buy list", local guy had one brand new for cheap along with a new crank bolt and other little goodies, couldn't pass it up.

Anyone that knows SR's knows that ARP's standard headstud offering sucks, it simply doesn't thread far enough into the block and makes it super easy to rip the threads out. I opted to pick up some Mazworx headstuds for added security all around. Picture below shows how much extra thread you get on the Mazworx studs vs the ARP kit. Also, WHY THE HELL IS THERE ARP LUBE ON THE THREADS THAT GO INTO THE BLOCK

Turbo setup is something I was really worried about, I want response and have a power goal around 400whp. Lucky me found a sweet deal on a Trust TD05H-18G locally and I picked it up. The turbo needed a rebuild and while I was in there I decided it was a good time to upgrade to a billet 20G wheel.

https://i.imgur.com/2usl3Rmh.jpg
This means I'm staying bottom mount so I needed a manifold, local company, Future Fabrication, was having a "Black Friday" sale so I ordered a stock location manifold setup for a Tial MV-S. Insanely nice manifold that uses a Hypertune collector, this thing is a work of art and will help me reach my goals.

And to kind of round things off, thanks to Juan, AKA Bardabe on here, I got a full OE gasket kit, new transmission seals/gaskets and some Tomei 260 Procams. The 272's in the motor are much to aggressive for what I want, the Tomei's should be perfect.

SR Adventure Continued
Adapting the SR to the factory 5 speed is super easy, just a simple adapter plate and some machine work. Local shop bent me over on the cost of the machine work, but did a great job so I can't complain to much.

https://i.imgur.com/2zcOw7Vh.jpg
Keeping driveability is huge for this project so I did not want to run a heavy clutch in the car. I decided on an OS Giken TS2BD. Clutch is used, but has been rebuilt and is ready to go. Super excited to see how this feels, probably one of my favorite parts going on the motor.

Fuel will be delivered by some ID1050X injectors, the car will be running on the E54 blend we have available at the pump here in Arizona. Also got an off brand fuel rail with the injectors, not sure if I'll run it or get a radium rail.

Choosing an intercooler was also something I had trouble with, stumbled on this brand new Blitz kit for cheap on YAJ and had to have it. I have always loved the aesthetic of the Blitz logo and you can't go wrong with anything made by Blitz. The piping will need to be hacked, but that cool.

Since I am not looking for a ton of power, Nistune should do the trick for an ECU setup. Got this S15 SR ECU with a Nistune board installed in it for a steal and since its an S15 ECU it means I get all of the cool features Nistune offers like boost control and flex fuel support.
https://i.imgur.com/kyLhFWBh.jpg

So excited for the clutch setup, paired with the Z32 trans its going to be amazing. As for wiring up the S15 ECU for the S13 SR, not much needs to change other than a few connectors here and there along with the stuff bardabe mentioned. Since its a newer ECU having boost control built in along with some other advantages of the S15 ECU will be really nice.
You may have parted out a sweet build, but that vert is pretty sick :naughty:

Thanks man!
Had a friend give me a hand with reassembling the transmission yesterday, ended up forgetting some really important washers so it has to come back apart, but I'm happy to see a complete transmission again. Really happy with the GKTech transmission mount, it looks super beefy.

Got to work on the car for a few hours today. Didn't get much done, but I pulled most of the shit out of the bay and it looks so much better already. Next step is to relocate the fuse box under the drivers side headlight and try to tuck the rest of the wiring down on the frame rails.

Took the chance to test fit my intercooler while I was out there today. Fits so snug between the frame rails, would like to have it upside down and let the piping to follow the original intake piping holes, but without some cutting and wedging I don't think its going to be possible. Happy with where it sits overall, piping and bottom of the intercooler will be protected by the tow hooks and the core support which is really nice. Gotta love how meaty it looks with the fascia off too :naughty:

I also gave my buddy an S13 shell I had, he is super excited for the project and I'm helping him with it while I work on the Z. It was left outside with no windows for over a year so it needs some love, we're going to put a N/A SR in it for him to learn how to drift and since I gave it to him I'll be able to drive it around from time to time too. I'll probably be posting random updates about this project here too.

Crazy what one can do with a pair of really big dikes ahaha
Little update on some more parts rolling in for the build.
The coilovers on the car are "road/track" coilovers, but they came with some really lame spring rates. The guys over at Powertrix hooked it up with some swift springs. Decided on 8k/7k, since the car is going to have nearly 50/50 weight distribution 1k difference in rate from front to rear should be perfect for balancing the car. They also sent over the revised lower mounts for the front coils and some new dust boots to update the coils to 2017 spec.

Finally got my wastegate, shit head I bought it from took 2 weeks to ship it, but its hear and its getting me even more hyped for this turbo setup!

Local friend Steve, known as 2_Liter_Turbo on here, hooked me up with this authentic Greddy manifold. Should be a great pair for my ported head and its something I've always wanted for a build.
https://i.imgur.com/Zzyaainh.jpg
Lastly, something else I got from 2_Liter_Turbo, I had an issue with the crank case breather on my SR being super loose. This is really common once you pull it out of the block, so he decided to do something about it and created this beautiful part. It turns your crank case breather into a sexy aluminum -10 an fitting that you can run up to the valve cover and never have to worry about a leaky, loose fitting again. Hes got a bunch of these for sale, shoot him a PM if you want one!

Small update, finally got to work on this turd again. I set out to get the suspension sorted today, but only got the front, half done. I've been super busy helping my buddy with his S13 and honestly I am fine with it because I don't even have a motor for this yet.
Anyway, I did get to install some of the goodies I bought on my front coils. New Swift 8k springs, revised dust boots/bump stops and revised lower mounts all installed and ready to rock. Also removed the collar under the pillow ball, this was suggested by Powertrix and on the Z32 its really not needed. Really excited to see how the 8k/7k spring rates work out with the SR.

If you've ever worked on a Z32, you know the front suspension is a pain in the ass. All I wanted was to pull my LCA to install the new ball joint and bushings, but ended up ripping out the upright because its just easier that way. Guess its okay, gives me an excuse to give everything a good look over.
https://i.imgur.com/qk4aEmlh.jpg
The SR was also dropped off last weekend to my buddy Juan at Bardabe Performance. Its in good hands and I am super excited to get it back and get this thing on the road. Making some expensive decisions now to make sure it is super solid for anything I want to throw at it in the future.
As for the S13 I have been working on, figured I'd just put updates on it here too. Background on the car is shitty, a buddy bought it with a blown KA for a project and had his SR stolen by a local shop. He abandoned the project and it sat on some land owned by a family member of mine for about a year. Another friend started to show interest in it and it ended up being given to him.
We've got the new heart for it already, a Type X SR20DE. Decided on this because of a limited budget, but also because it gives room to grow in the future. With the loads of extra SR junk I have we will easily be able to built the motor in the future. Overall its pretty clean, we went through it and resealed everything top to bottom and cleaned up some other stuff. Its basically drop in ready now, we just need a few more bits then it will be up and running.

The clutch on the motor ended up being completely fucked, gotta love these JDM importers that always say "45k low mileage motor" in their ads... With it being a DE, we couldn't find a clutch that would work so we opted for a full DET setup. Again trying to save some cash, a local friend came to the rescue with a Spec Stage 3 and flywheel. Obviously overkill, but it'll work.

With the car sitting outside with no windows for a year we are in the process of ripping everything out of it. Getting rid of anything that we don't need will help lighten the car up and with a non turbo SR that means it will be slightly less gutless :ugh:
https://i.imgur.com/KOhd84ph.jpg
Next weekend I hope to finish all of the suspension on the Z, I've got Saturday off so it will be easier to spend some time working on it. Hopefully the S13 will move for the first time in a few years too, can't wait to see how the car feels with it.

I had a 91 z32 2+2. I tt swapped it, new nissan wiring harness, all deletes, rebuilt turbos, upgraded to 2nd gen 370cc rb25 injector, tuned, replaced every deal etc while engine was out. Car ran pretty great.
Ultimately sold it awaiting for it to have a random problem where the engine would have to come out again. Great choice going sr, enjoy!

TT's are awesome when built right, but they are awful if you don't make sure every little thing is sorted.
If this car had been a factory TT, I would have left it alone.

Thanks! Its really not that bad, there will be a mount kit available soon, with a stock SR you can get a running SR-Z for quite a bit less than a proper TT swap. My build is me not being able to decide what I really want, so I am just going all out to try and make it the best it can be.

nice man! do you have more info of the kit? I wish there was a plug and play harness for it too:-/
Sorry I am going to be blunt so don't be offended :D
1) The kit in question hasn't been commissioned for production as of yet. There is another mount adapter circulating on the market currently and utilizes stock mounts (I actually have tb13's old set lol. But there is a good chance I will not be using them).
2) Wiring for all 90s Nissan is pretty much the same. Adapting a SR into a Z is fairly straight forward and you can reuse a majority of the S13 SR harness. Just takes a little time as compared to opening your wallet
Lets just say there are a few of these going together with varying levels of prep, mount ideas, turbo setups, etc etc etc :coolugh:
nice man! do you have more info of the kit? I wish there was a plug and play harness for it too:-/
The mounts are not done yet, hoping to have a rough pair done when my motor is completed to test out then from there changes will be made and a final product will be available. The set that you can purchase now works, but it is a flawed design that places the weight of the engine on the motor rubber mounts in a way that will destroy them over time. With a setup like mine making 400+whp it is not a design that I would suggest relying on.
As for wiring, like RalliartRsX said, it is very simple. Converting a harness is easy, but you can purchase a new harness from wiring specialties if you wanted to that is plug and play.
Suspension is finally all torn out, the amount of spiderwebs under this thing is horrifying :ugh: Need to go pickup a press so I can replace bushings then I can slap it all back in with all of the new arms.

I did pickup a Z32 subframe that was modified for an RB swap. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but its pretty damn hacked and I couldn't get it to line up in the car so I'm not sure it I'll be running it...

Didn't get much else done on the Z, but the S13 got a lot more love. My buddy spent basically the whole day stripping the interior and knocking all of the sound deadening out. Not pretty, but its way better than before.

Tossed back in what we care about and called it "done" for the time being. Already looks 10x better than it did a few weeks ago.

Finally had all of the parts for the SR so we decided to get it in the car. First issue we ran into was the throwout bearing sleeve, the DE uses a much longer sleeve than the DET. Since we put a DET clutch in the motor we needed a DET sleeve to make it all work. Thankfully there was an SR transmission in the trunk of the S13 and it had the correct sleeve we needed.
https://i.imgur.com/f6AKjobh.jpg
Nearly killed myself trying to get the SR into the car with my tiny hoist, but we got it after a lot of cussing and hitting shit. Glad its in and we can work to get it running now. I can't figure out what suspension is on this turd, its a fucking monster truck even with a ton of shit in the trunk and the motor in it  Don't mind the crash bar, one of my other friends took some of the bolts out and I made the mistake of jumping on it

Its been too damn long since I'd made a real update for this, I've been busy putting this S13 together for my buddy, but I've had some time to mess with the Z and finally have some stuff worth posting.
I have picked up a hacked/boxed subframe years ago from a friends Z that had an RB swapped into it. I hung onto it because I figured I'd end up using it at some point. After trying to install it on my car, I realized it is tweaked and won't fit. Not the end of the world, I wasn't stoked about running it due to how much material had been removed anyway so I notched mine in a more proper way. Still needs to be boxed, but I wanted to make sure I cut enough out before I start adding material back to it.

https://i.imgur.com/L682xReh.jpg
I bought another SR because I wanted some extra parts off of it. I knew the motor was fucked when I picked it up, but wasn't sure to what extent. This motor had its oil pressure sensor fall out on the freeway so I was expecting the worst for the bottom end and it did not disappoint. Here is your daily dose of carnage :ugh:

Using a spare SR block I had, I slapped an oil pan on it and bolted it up to my transmission. Since motor mounts aren't readily available for this swap, I figured having a super light bare block would make everything easier when it comes to making mounts, not to mention being able to just pull the head off will make things easier. It is hilarious how tiny the SR block looks bolted to a VG trans :keke:
https://i.imgur.com/U9L8NJPh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/W1P52JEh.jpg
With that bolted up, it was time to set it into my shell and check out how it all fits. Bolted the transmission mount up and supported the motor with a floor jack, everything clears perfectly. So much room for activities in here now, so refreshing to see vs the VG that I am used to working on. Set the extra head I have on it just for shits and giggles, got me so hyped to get this all together!

I've been running a set of 17x9 +15 FN01R-C's on this car forever. Love how they look and the fitment is spot on, but it is time to change things up. I bought a set of TE37 SAGA's late last year and wasn't sure if I'd run them or not. I tried selling them, but had no luck so I said fuck it and bought tires for them. They are 18x10.5 +15 square with a 265/35r18, it'll be a chore to make them fit, but well worth it. The finish, engraving and SAGA face design is incredible.

https://i.imgur.com/HLbustYh.jpg
Finally have my fuel setup mostly finished up too. I've always hated high port SR's with top feed setups, the fuel rail sits up way too high above the intake and just looks out of place. With a set of ID1050x's and a Radium fuel rail, I can run the injectors without a hat keeping the rail nearly level with the intake manifold when installed. Paired with my Greddy manifold, its not only great looking, but functional.

Suspension stuff is coming along, slowly. I still need to buy a press to get all of the bushings out, but everything is torn apart and I have all of the new parts in hand ready to go. Also really considering selling all of the GKtech arms I have for the car, my tension rods look like hell after less than a year, most of which the car was just sitting for... I already purchased SPL tension rods to replace them, having ran a bunch of different brand arms, SPL cannot be touched in terms of quality and finish. Now to decided if I spend the cash or to hold off...

Working on getting motor mounts worked out, I should have my built motor back soon and I will be able to get all of the suspension back on next weekend, shit is going to get interesting soon :naughty:
Disappointing week over here, found some wonderfully fucked stuff that is going to set me back a bit... :ugh:
Got bad news about my SR head, previous owner had been running the car incredibly lean and now there are some wonderful cracks/pitting around the plugs. Blows me away that someone would spend the money to fully build a cylinder head then have someone tune it who doesn't know what they are doing... RIP ported/polished S13 SR head
https://i.imgur.com/2OTWMcKh.jpg
Getting my rear suspension apart went really smooth until it came to getting my axles out of my hubs. The first came with a bit of hammering, no real issue getting it free. The second though, let me fucking tell you, was basically fused inside the wheel bearing. After smashing the tip of the axle, bashing the back of the spindle and applying quite a bit of heat it finally came free, well almost free. Had to bust the angle grinder out to get the axle out, at least it was already clicking so I didn't destroy a good part.
https://i.imgur.com/0KhTkGHh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/PY8gFzqh.jpg
BUT WAIT! THERE IS MORE! Was getting ready to knock out my subframe bushings when I noticed one of the LCA pickup points is completely fucked. Probably wouldn't really effect much, but I am not going to waste time replacing bushings in a subframe that isn't in good shape. It looks like the LCA has been replaced, so I can only assume the PO of the car had the LCA replaced and they left the subframe in this condition.

Soooo on a more positive note!
A local friend came to the rescue with a head for my motor. It really sucks to have to write the first off, but this one keeps me on track for the power/response I am searching for. This head was built by PortFlow in SoCal, its got Supertech dual springs/guides, +1mm Ferrea valves and a really nice port/polish. Perfect candidate to slap on the bottom end that is being built and make some nice power.

One thing I have been worried about since I bought my turbo manifold was the wastegate placement. Since I have a motor sitting in the car, I figured I'd see how it fits. Thankfully, it fits great! The wastegate fits right under the BMC and easily clears all of the brake lines. Super relieved it fits, but I am going to have to make up some kind of heat shield.

Man I wish I had the budget to go VE, but I just couldn't swing it right now. Plus I already have manifolds, fuel rail, S14.5 cover etc for the DET head. This head is great though, flows on par with a P11 head so it won't disappoint.

Paid 2500, wasn’t starting just bought cas and ptu fired right up! How you like your Powertrix coilovers? There’s not a lot of options on z32 platform, I was thinking about stance xr1s.All Z32's have engine electrical issues, you got pretty lucky it was the easy to replace stuff. I got stuck at work one day replacing an injector, was not fun... I'd suggest a new wiring harness if it's never been replaced, it's incredible how many issues fix themselves and how much better a car runs when the harness is replaced. New style injctors are a great investment too.
Powertrix stuff is top notch. This is the second set of their coilovers I've owned and love them. I'm also running their front upper control arms, I actually got an old revision set from CZP when I bought them and Charles over at Powertrix sent me the revised collars no questions asked free of charge. They take care of their customers and I would highly recommend any of their parts.

On top of all that good stuff, I am also changing up the turbo setup. The TD05 would have been fun, but as the motor got finalized I really decided I wanted more and just happened across a Garrett G25-550. These caught my eye when they were released, but I didn't think I'd ever get my hands on one. New manifold is getting ordered this weekend and I am moving to a 44mm wastegate to make sure I can control boost properly. I'd suggest you get ahold of someone for a quote, it's really reasonable if you do the basic stuff like I did. Shoot Bardabe a message, he deals directly with WPC.

Man, I want to see how that turbo does.Yup! I'm beyond excited to see how the turbo does, I have the smaller .72 turbine housing so I should see really great response and still be able to make mid 400whp with ease. Goal has always been to make the car capable of casual weekend competition, but also streetable with a/c. This setup all together should get me there.

New manifold is here, so I did some mock up to see how everything fits in the engine bay. As with all Future Fabrication manifolds, Jon killed it with this beauty. With the G25-550, proper boost control was something I was worried about, I mentioned this to Jon before I ordered the manifold and he made sure it wouldn't be an issue with a massive outlet to the 44mm WG flange. Should be able to easily control boost for a 91 map.

I think they are some kind of fitted seat cover, there are zippers up the sides of the seats. They have seen better days, the car will get some new seats once we get it properly registered.
Sold off my FN01R-C's and snagged some new shoes for this turd. Regretted selling the first set of C5C2's I bought and was lucky enough to find another set recently. Such simple and appealing wheels, keeping the overall look period correct. They need some refinishing, but that kind of expected for such old wheels.
Before pictures, tearing them down this weekend to get the lips repaired and the faces/barrels powdercoated. Fronts are 17x9 +20 and rears are 17x9 +15, will let me keep the fitment I had with the FN01's.

Hey Juan, I see you are spreading misinformation based on your own mistakes. You know you were banned from my group specifically for starting drama, as I repeatedly warned you would happen before you continued. I didn’t even factor in your personal bashing of me both in my group and through messenger - a fact that Franklin can corroborate and didn’t believe until I showed him screen shots. I even gave you a second chance and you immediately seized the opportunity to continue bashing me and my swap design repeatedly without missing a beat or providing any evidence.
Before you proceed in slandering my mount design, you’d be wise to provide evidence of such a flaw. From here it appears you are simply butthurt that I’ve spent my time and personal resources developing parts and interest in this swap while you were busy trash talking me due to your own lack of foresight.
The set that you can purchase now works, but it is a flawed design that places the weight of the engine on the motor rubber mounts in a way that will destroy them over time. With a setup like mine making 400+whp it is not a design that I would suggest relying on.
It’s awesome that you’re doing this swap! You're making good progress, hang in there. An awesome end result is just around the corner. If your comment about my mounts is based solely on what Juan has misinformed you, consider the fact that he has an agenda and a personal vendetta against me. He has zero interest in keeping things civil to foster a positive community for this swap.
With over 20 completed sr swaps from the USA to Australia, Japan and Europe, I’ve seen no complaints of any such compromise. My design was built using cad and places no undue stress on the mounts. A lot of time and research went into this design to factor in stress, affordability of the overall swap, and I make no profit off any mounts I sell. My investment in the z32 community stretches back decades, and my desire to provide an alternative option for helping keep as many of them on the road as possible is what drove my research.
Keep up the good work. I wouldn't rule out my adapters too quickly, they'll help you reach your goal much more easily. Check out Jimmy Oakes build videos on youtube for better insight.

LOL dude , I don’t have a “personal agenda” to bash your product. When Franklin and I did his swap you sent me a PM asking about mount info I don’t recall if you were the dude who I forgot to reply to or told I wasn’t planning to make a kit / production. Then later when I started my swap you offered me your mounts and I kindly denied told you there was flaws in your kit and I could do a better job on my own.
Then your personal butthurt agenda to tell everyone how mean and shitty I am started. Which is fine by me because everyone who’s dealt with me (and trust me I’ve dealt with far more people in and out of the industry both through my business and during my time as Nissan’s Motorsport Director) that I’m just straight forward.
With that said I’m glad you’ve spent so much time developing parta and are moving forward with something you love. Understand basic leverage systems and materials before crying to the world about how shitty I am. maybe take a Physics 101 course at your local community college instead of being a cry baby. get over it I don’t like your mount design, I never have. If your mount design was good I would of proudly have bought it because it would of made my life easier when swapping my car years after franklins swap. It was obviously flawed enough that other members who know better and understand basic principles of load bearing, heat, vibration and leverage spent hours making our own mounts. Just because a YouTube guy used your mounts and street kids use your mounts doesn’t mean everyone in the world will.
I’m glad I was able to inspire you along with the guys in japan who did this swap before me to do something you like and turn it into a profitable small venture.

Every time you respond to me I appreciate it, because you prove my point with your constant tone of disrespect. I never offered you my mounts, and you never denied or said anything regarding flaws in my design. In fact, the first time I heard you believed that was through other people telling me you had been spreading misinformation that there was some inherent flaw with their design that would cause premature and potentially catastrophic engine mount failure. And yet, you have never once laid hands on my mounts nor provided any proof of said flaw.
The fact is, you only began bashing me personally and my mounts when you realized I had spent years building up a fan base for the swap, and truly I heard nothing until Jimmy Oakes began his swap. I think it angered you so much that I was the one he was turning to, because in your narcissistic mind you fathered this swap by hacking up Franklin’s car before I developed an actual swap setup for it. You want to take credit for the swap, but you can’t with my successes in the way. The fact that you claim I’ve made it “into a profitable small venture” is a solid indicator, because in saying so, you admit I’ve been successful with my resources. And that drives you to anger and bashing.
You also seem to have issues with people that can’t benefit you in any way, whether financially or for your narcissistic reputation. I never told anyone you were mean and shitty. I simply explained to people what was happening behind the scenes because your slander against me is the antithesis to reality. I am about to prove that below with screen shots of our conversation.
When you make comments like “Understand basic leverage systems and materials before crying to the world about how shitty I am. maybe take a Physics 101 course at your local community college instead of being a cry baby”, it really shows what kind of person you are. Not that I need to dignify myself to you, but I earned my degree at Hong Kong University and I build and repair robots for a living. So perhaps you should finish your own community college degree before throwing insults at me for my education and background, about which you know nothing.
And nobody can provide any evidence that my mounts have any issues, because they don’t. The people you know who have made their own are people you persuaded that my mounts have a flaw, which says more about you than it does about my mounts. And of course for people with access to welding, you can cobble together your own mounts cheaper. But they won’t compare in quality or performance to my USA-sourced T6061 CNC mounts. I’ll let people decide for themselves if my mounts appear to be something manufactured my someone with a b-rate education and no structural engineering/cad background.
Our initial conversation and your response to my prototype mount design:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1960/45080668971_df95b15b99.jpg
You asking me why I banned you from the group after your incessant drama mongering and bashing me personally, telling people I banned you because you refused to buy my mounts (from which I make zero profit). And proceeding to admit you were only posting drama because "it was fun, it's way easy to get you worked up":

So you admitted you persisted in posting drama after I repeatedly warned you that the continuation of which would get you banned from the group AGAIN. So quit lying to people, it's obvious that you have a personal problem with me and my success with this swap and there is nothing inherently wrong with my mount design. People can decide for themselves, but it's important for people to know both sides when one person is slinging accusations like you have been.

lol funny thing is you post Facebook messages but you’ve deleted or edited your comments about me in the group before “adding me”. I honestly don’t care about the years you’ve spent building a fan base and your kit. Congratufuckinglations man whatever makes you feel good. You keep bringing up things we have discussed and talked over. You can’t get over the fact that someone else has told you “I don’t like your design, it sucks” and keep crying acting like the big dick in the locker room BEGGING for public attention on how much better you are. I don’t care what you think, I know plenty of educated people. I used to baby sit engineers from UC’s and Cal state universities yet they turned to me for “how does this happen?” “Why is this happening”. So I’m going to stop derailing Brocks build thread with our personal nonsense with this. I’m not in the market to make SR20 Z32 swap kits, I never have been, never will be.
For a person with such a high education \ busy life building and fixing robots you have a ton of free time to beg every Z32 owner to swap an SR20 in their car and use your mount kit. I might be a narcissist asshole according to you, but at least I’m not a cry baby that can’t move past someone not liking something I made. :picardfp:

Another lie. I deleted some of your comments after banning you for posting drama after warning you not to. I haven't posted a single negative comment regarding you. The only comments I ever posted about you was when Brock requested I add you, and I informed him why you weren't allowed in the group after your first banning. It was all fact-based, nothing personal against you. And then I gave you a second chance and you blew it within the first few minutes.
You've proven my point repeatedly. I'm simply clearing the air so people can see how emotional you get over me and that your comments against me are of a personal nature and unfounded. Last time I checked you were the emotional one in this subject and it has all always been personal from your end. You took my constructive criticism and took it as a personal attack. I think Stillens supercharger kit sucks, it was all CAD designed and he sells tons of them. Just because something is machined in America designed by college graduates doesn’t make them correct or the best. Yet I don’t see stillen repeadetly crying online to every customer who thinks the same way I do about their kit and beg for them to prove them wrong unlike somebody I know *gasps* get over it dude. The simple fact that we were discussing other engine swap options in your group was enough to ruffle your feathers about your page and how that’s not allowed in your page. Get over yourself, SR20’s or Z32’a aren’t gods gift to the tuner culture. If your kit truly is doing as well as you claim it is and you care so little why are you making such a big deal out of old news? I wish we could have this conversation in person so you can truly see how little I care about you and your opinion.
P.S. sweet updates coming soon from Brock.

Gotta subscribe to this! This build is proper!
Long overdue update of sorts, finally got off my ass and got my rear subframe prep'd for solid bushings. I nearly lost my sanity doing my S13 solid bushings and wasn't about to break out the hack saw for this. I bought myself an air hammer and Snap-On sheet metal cutting bit. Those sleeves didn't stand a chance, bashed them out with minimal damage to the subframe in no time. Cleaned up the front and rear subframes, rear is ready for new bushings and the front is ready for boxing/reinforcement.

I was having some trouble deciding on what ECU I was going to run, found someone local selling an AEM V2 with converted CAS so I snagged that up. Also grabbed a Wiring Specialties SR-Z32 harness for the AEM V2 setup for MAP/IAT/Flex Fuel. Need to modify the coil pack harness still, but all sensors are in hand. Once the engine is in the car it'll just be a matter of hooking everything up!

Got my Panasports re-finished too. Faces were re-painted silver with some pearl, lips repaired, re-polished and wrapped them in some Zestino Gredge 07R 255/40r17. Stoked to see how these look on the car.

Finished collecting parts for my oil cooler setup as well. Since I am stuck with the stock SR pan adding an oil cooler gives some extra peace of mind as it adds capacity. Whole setup consists of the following:
-Setrab 25 row core
-CZP Z32 oil cooler bracket
-Tomei N2 block
-Greddy/Trust Thermostatic oil filter relocation block
https://i.imgur.com/NCPuijOh.jpg
Lastly I picked up a steering wheel. I really didn't need it, but the OE wheel is ugly. Picked up a Tomei wheel and had an HKS horn button laying around. Really like how this setup looks, waiting on my Works/Bell hub and Rapfix QR to show up so I can throw in in the car.

Nice project man!
Nice project man!
Thanks!
Finished up my subframe yesterday afternoon, solid subframe bushings and some fresh rattle can makes it look brand new, but I ran into an issue. I purchased a set of GKTech solid subframe bushings well over a year ago for this project, on there site it does not show the Z32 as a supported chassis, but when I searched their site for "Z32" they came up so I just figured I'd buy them. I pressed them into the subframe and realized they aren't long enough to sit level with the subframe.
Not sure how I should move forward, should I just send it as is or find some way to fill that gap?

Think I would fill the gap, as the most solid part is bottom and top of the housing. Do you have a lathe? if so you can easily make some "spacerdiscs"

I was thinking the same, posted on a local FB page and someone who has access to a lathe offered to mill down some spacers for me. That solves that problem, hopefully he can bust them out this week so I can get the subframe into the car this coming weekend.
Got my Works/Bell hub and Rapfix II QR today, FedEx lost it for a week in Japan and I was getting a bit worried, but it finally made it here. Super nice stuff, can't wait to throw it in the car and see how it looks.

I know Izzy, his SR swapped Z is immaculate!
Damn! That steering wheel....
My thoughts exactly :yum: I've never had a proper aftermaket wheel setup in any of my cars, figured I should go all out if I was going to do it!
Update! Finally started putting shit back together!
Got my rear knuckles set with ES bushings, I will never put myself through the hell of installing these again. Front and rear LCA's got fresh bushings and ball joints as well.
https://i.imgur.com/WQVYgCvh.jpg
Noticed one of my wheel bearings had excessive play when I went to reinstall it, I have no idea how I missed it when I took them apart... Finding replacement Z32 hubs/bearings is basically impossible so I picked up a set of S13/S14 conversion hubs, replaced both for good measure while its all apart. Still need to figure out how I'll space the ebrake pin out since these don't have the ear like the Z32 hub, but thats a small detail I can take care of when I get the car home.

Had Jon at Future Fab box in my subframe, he did an amazing job as usual. Threw some black rattle can on it and its ready to go back in the car for good.

Finally got some of the parts back on the car tonight, forgot some stuff so I had to leave it half done, but tomorrow it should sit back on the ground! Really not stoked with the GKTech arms I have for the car, they'll probably all come off for SPL stuff when I have some extra cash to blow.

Got a chance to finally see my C5C2's on it and holy hell do they look good. I was really worried about the front brake clearance, another set of C5C2's I had didn't clear my Wilwoods, but these being GT-R spec have a high disk front face and clear with a few mm to spare. Absolutly love how the rotor almost completely fills the wheel face and the Wilwood logo peeks out between spokes.

This build is cool - but why is it taking so long :)
I tt swapped my z in less than a month and rebuilt many items along the way, suspension/brakes/engine/turbos/ etc
The patience you have to keep at it over so much time is something that I do not have.

Well I'm a mixture or busy and lazy. I'd love to have been able to complete the car a year ago, but with the pace I'm moving at it allows me to buy the parts I really want and means the end product will be exactly what I envisioned.

Their adjusters are fucking awful, the design is decent, but their tolerances are garbage. Both of my RUCA's had to be clamped to a bench so I could use a long extension to have enough leverage to forcefully thread them together. The bolts that are used to clamp the adjusters all take excessive force to tighten down as well, not what I expected for brand new arms... The eccentric lockout seems nice though and the V4 traction rods are significantly better overall, but still take some force to thread together.

.......Because swapping a non TT engine into a Z, is not as simple as "rebuilding" and dropping in and go. Its like every single non OEM engine swap into another chassis; there is a shit down of minor nuisances which add up to months and months very quickly :wan:

There is a lot that goes into the swap for sure, but honestly I've just been lazy. What I accomplished last weekend I could have done a year ago :p
I do have a lot of stuff I haven't posted about for the car, I haven't been idle for all this time, its always in the back of my head. When the time comes to drop the engine in I'll show off all of the other little goodies that will make this whole setup come together :naughty:

I’m speechless, the attention to detail is mind boggling, you definitely know what you like & want, then you make it happen, really awesome.
That TOMEI wheel is a gem that sets off the mid 90’s plastic dash perfectly.
I’m currently in the process of building a 500hp FJ20ET into my 510 & draw inspiration from this build, thanks. As soon as the FJ510 build is done, I start my next build, a SR22vet/VQ box into a Datsun 710. Your project gives me the drive to take my time & get it perfect.
That tire and wheel combo is perfect, everything else related to this car really.

Do it once and do it right! The Tomei wheel keeps everything somewhat period correct which was another focus of mine for the car, I think it fits perfectly.
A 710 with an SR22VE sounds like a rocket ship/death trap :rawk:

Straight balling!
Dollar dollar bills!
Car is off to Bad Apple Motorsports for fab work as of today, finally on the last stretch to get this thing back on the road! :wiggle:
Did a little bit of mockup before the car was off to get all of the fab work done, decided midmount was the way to go. Keeping all of the coolers stacked will keep everything as efficient as possible which for Arizona summers will be a big plus. Along with efficiency for cooling, the intercooler piping is going to be incredibly short, response is going to be incredible!

I installed my TT steering rack and SPL outer tie rods, the OE inners were basically part of the rack, but with some leverage and the proper tools they gave way. The Z33 inners I bought are too damn short, so those need to be swapped again, but for now it will be okay to roll around.

Got a care package from ATP thanks to my bud Juan aka Bardabe with all of the goodies to get the SR breathing right. Some nice cast 90*s will come off the intercooler to simplify everything and another off the compressor housing to get the air going the right way. Exhaust will be all custom with proper male/female vbands holding it all together for easy install/removal and no leaks.

Its been a while, haven't had much motivation recently due to a few things going on, but I haven't forgotten about this car.
Fab work to get the car running is complete! Intake, intercooler piping, intercooler mounting, full exhaust, custom fan shroud and some other little things. Opted to mid mount the intercooler, entire cooling setup is very stealth and fits great. Left the wastegate to dump to atmosphere, not sure if I'll leave it like this, but I want to hear it scream at least for a while  Dual Spal 13in fans on a custom shroud should to the trick paired with a Koyo N-Flow to keep coolant temps happy. Also had a -10an fitting welded to the PS return so everything can be connected with clean/simple AN lines.

I had posted about K-Series coils a while back, was planning to use them, but without the capabilities to build a bracket I decided to pick up a Taarks R35 coil conversion kit. I haven't seen much about this kit, but the price is really reasonable so I pulled the trigger. Interesting to see how the front coil is modified to fit. Their site claims these coils use a custom stalk, but from that I can see these are original stalks? This kit will not clear a coil pack cover, if anyone was curious.

While I was ordering bits from Taarks I snagged a PS relocation bracket too. Since I abandoned the ability to have A/C with mid mounting my intercooler I figured I should move the PS pump to a more appealing location. Cleaned up the pump and slapped it on. Need to get a fresh pulley mounted up and clean up my alternator next.

Quite some time ago I went to replace my exhaust studs, the stock SR studs are known to be garbage and prone to snapping so I wanted to get ahead of this. I started from the back of the engine, 7 studs came out without issue and the last snapped off... I was really annoyed and stressed about it, basically pushed the engine into a corner and hadn't touched it since. With the car back from having some fab work done I figured I'd try to resolve this issue.
https://i.imgur.com/KlZV1Ofh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/iy32BR0h.jpg
I didn't want to risk some junk extractor snapping in the bolt so I grabbed a Snap-on left hand drill bit, bolt extractor and punch. Rolled the engine onto its side and got crackin', I let some PB Blaster sit on the bolt for a bit before I started to hopefully help loosen it up a bit. Used the punch to give myself a somewhat centered starting point and drilled slow. The bit paired with some lubricant went through with ease, extractor snagged the both with no issue and it came out with a little bit for force. Huge weight lifted off out my shoulders. I know this seems like such a small issue, but it was really something I wasn't looking forward to dealing with knowing it could lead to other issues if I messed it up.

Brock, not original stalks. The original GTR stalks are not only shorter, they only accept the long skinny 12 mm spark plug.
The S15 boot is the closest, however the length is incorrect. Just about all Nissan coil pack boots can be swapped around with varying levels of success
I'm also running the coil kit. Couple of notes
The inner boot is somewhat brittle (pm me and we chat and I'll send pics)
PS great progress!

Ah I completely forgot about the GT-R using a 12mm plug. Thanks for the info and pictures regarding the boots, I'll make sure to be overly careful when handling the coils ahaha.
The rear suspension arms have all been swapped over to SPL parts as well. Really love the adjusters on these arms, they are unmatched in quality and durability.

While I don't suggest anyone undertaking an in-depth swap on a Z32 due to lack of support, they are very solid chassis to modify. It is a really underrated chassis, partly because most Z32 owners prefer to keep their cars as "pure" or close to how they came from the factory. I guess I'm not one of them, this chassis deserves better than a heavy V6 weighing the front down!

WAAAHOO BACK FOR 2020, oh wait I don't really have any real updates...
Pulled my SR out of the corner and mounted my freshly ceramic coated turbine housing, manifold, downpipe and screamer. Wasn't really feeling black or silver Cerakote for this. Powder coater told me he had some titanium so I decided to go that route, really happy with how it came out. Also threw on a Taarks PS relocation and rebuilt my pump with a KA rebuild kit

I hope everyone is hanging in there through all of this insanity. With not being able to do anything I might actually finish this project :eek3d:
Rolled the SR out of the corner to get the intake manifold mounted up finally. Cleaned it up a bit then dug for the bag of new OEM hardware I bought years ago for this engine. Fresh studs, nuts, washers and bolts along with an OEM gasket, and to finish it off a new red Greddy badge.

Next order was to get the turbo coolant/oil lines figured out. Got a load of goodies from Phenix Industries thanks to the homie Bardabe. Since the turbo is so damn small making everything fit took some time to work out, but this should work. Need to get some proper heat sleeve for the lines still, but I can do that once its closer to running. Also ripped the OEM hard fuel lines off, moved them to the passenger side and fitted up some 5/16 to -6 adapters.

Finally got the engine off its stand and bolted my OSG twin disk up with some ARP flywheel bolts. Transmission got a Z33 clutch fork, chromoly pivot ball and new springs. Need to grab my trans and check throwout bearing clearances, but from the OSG catalog it looks like Z32 and S13 both use the same throwout sleeve so I should be good to drop the engine in by the end of the week!

The stock s13 sleeve is too long for the OgGiken twin disc. It should use a 16-18mm sleeve, unless what you meant was the z32 sleeve is shorter and fits within the OsG spec for their s13 clutch.
Also make sure you have the right throw out bearing for the clutch, it uses a smaller diameter contact area. Oem part is off an old datsun 720 pickup. Part number is on OsG documents.

I've got the sleeve that comes with the S13 kit from OSG, probably should have mentioned that, their chart shows the same size used for Z32. I've got the correct throwout bearing so I should be set there.

Above the Pana's and all of the other wheels I've owned these are my all time favorite wheel, deep concave face and GOLD :boink:

Also bolted my trans up to check if I had the correct throwout sleeve, turn out I don't. The fork is sitting too far forward, not sure if its because of the Z33 fork or something else. I'm going to order the next size down and see if that get me where I need to be, not trying to pull the trans after it goes back in.

Looks so good, keep it up man!
Worked some more things out over the last few days, its starting to get hot again so I need to get my shit together and wrap this up.
The engine harness came with wiring for the flex fuel sensor already added, but was missing wiring for oil pressure and fuel pressure and fan control. I'm completely new to wiring, I've cobbled some stuff together in the past, but nothing I'd be happy with running on this car.
So, I did my research, watched some videos and got to ordering stuff. Ended up with a few pairs of crimpers, 20awg TXL wire, ECU terminals, dual wall heat shrink, sleeve and DTM connectors. 4 way connector carries sensor 5v, sensor ground and signal from both fuel and oil pressure sensors. 2 way connector controls the fan relays, one terminal goes back to a 12v source and the other is pinned into a switched ground from the ECU. Took my time and what I ended up with turned out better than I expected!

Had some trouble finding a spot for the fuel filter, even though I have more room in the bay, the room isn't the most usable. Again something I've never done before, got some random sheet metal from the hardware store and got to work making templates out of cardboard. Filter got set behind the passenger strut tower, due to its overall length with fittings this was the best solution I could find for the time being. Boost solenoid got tucked away on the passenger side under the master cylinder.

Lastly, I got the PCV setup mostly sorted. Ended up ordering a Nuke Performance catch can, showed up in two days from Sweden  Part is super quality, but again I couldn't find anywhere to put the damn thing. Settled on a spot under the nose panel and its actually perfect, entire setup is stealth and out of the way. -10an lines made up off the valve cover go over to the passenger side and under the headlight bucket, just need to get a -10an added to the intake tube to wrap everything up!

Haha, as much as I'd love to sell some wheels to recoup a bit of cash, I can't get rid of my Pana's. I think my plan is to hold onto them and re-lip for the S13 with overs.
Fuel lines in the bay are mostly complete now, missing a few fittings to finish the last line from FPR to flex fuel sensor. Filter placement seems good, was kind of concerned that it may look a bit awkward with lines ran.

Did you use any sealant on the coolant pipe when you installed it? Or did you just do hammer time? I had some major leaking issues last time I reinstalled one (this was 2009-ish). I could never get it to seal. Would drip coolant as soon as it got warm.

Maybe I missed it but would the Altima fan conversion give you more clearance up front?
That would make me nervous considering the radiator mounts have rubber bushings and can flex a little...?

I just tapped it in, seemed to fit very snug, we'll see if it leaks once its running ahaha

I doubt it, this setup isn't very thick overall, going to play with the radiator position a bit and see if I can move it forward to give me some more room. Hopefully I can get the clearance I need, if not, I'll just go back to the stock bracket.
Have a little update on the car, finally got the differential, axles and driveshaft back in and set the car back on the ground for the first time with an engine in it. Feels good to see if sitting on the ground again. Hopefully it will be off to fab this weekend to get a few things changed up.

Ended up selling my AEM V2 that I had for the car, was lacking some features I wanted and I didn't want to deal with trying to work around it. Picked up a Link G4X PnP for the car and got it installed into the factory Z32 ECU case. Huge thanks to @bardabe for getting me setup!
https://i.imgur.com/ekyA3sUh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/uTV1bw4h.jpg
One of the main reasons I ditched the AEM was its inability to display critical information via the CAN stream. Since this car is mainly going to be a street car I wanted to keep the factory dash and run a few AEM X-Series CAN gauges to display oil pressure, fuel pressure, flex fuel etc. Picked up a nice din mount and love how clean and proper it looks with 3 matching gauges.

Not sure how much attention this will get for the next few months, its starting to get hellishly hot so it may go back to storage and sit for a bit even though its so close. Realistically shooting to have it tuned and ready to rock at the end of summer so I can enjoy it all winter long!
Car went for some more fab work and has been back for a bit, completely forgot to give an update because its so damn hot and I haven't touched it at all.
Intercooler piping was re-done, due to some changes in where the engine sits I the previous piping didn't fit properly. This piping also has all of the necessary fittings/nipples for IAVC, BOV and IAT. Also had a bracket made to set the PS reservoir between the BMC and clutch master, surprisingly there is not much room left in the bay with the SR. Engine bay is finally looking somewhat complete!

that obs is flawless
I love it, its even cooler getting it running again and seeing all of my family reminisce over old memories with my Great Grandpa that I was never able to meet.
Looking so good, great work!
Thanks! Hopefully once it comes together it'll be everything I have wanted for the last 3+ years

Appreciate it! One day I hope to go on a venture with a Z32 chassis like you are doing with your Z31!
I for sure need some of those, the zip ties were meant to be temporary, but I never ended up ordering any separators :ugh:

Everything about this is great. Hope to see it around later this year...?

Brock who ended up fabricating your intercooler piping? I need to get some done as well.

Thats the plan! For sure going to be driving it around town and probably take it out to the track a few times while I wrap my S13 up.

Nick at Wild Child did the intercooler piping, it came out really nice.
Car is off the trailer and with the weather cooling off I will be diving back into it soon.
Finally got a chance to throw the Jspec fascia and Stillen skirts on the car. The fascia completely changes the front of the car and the skirts flow well with it. Threw the RG's on one side and left the Pana's on the other, not 100% sure which set will stay on the car, but I think I am leaning toward the Pana's.

I also picked up a new oil pan for the car, since the Z32 comes factory with a rear sump pan, the front subframe needs to be notched to clear the SR oil pan. This isn't that big of a deal, but you get stuck with the stock SR pan which isn't great. I have wanted a rear sump pan since I started this swap and recently someone test fit a CXRacing SR Miata pan that clears the stock subframe with ease. I decided to pick one up and was really surprised that the pan its self is a quality piece.

The oil pickup on the other hand is far from adequate. Its strainer design is awful, it isn't braced to the girdle and it sits way too far forward in the sump*green tape is where the pickup sits*. The pickup is going to need to be re-made and when that is done I'm going to have some baffles added into the pan to make it a proper solution for my setup.

The silver wheels look absolutely amazing on that car, they look like they mean business. The gold wheels look like what you throw on your N/A auto 300z in high school.

Looks like theres a convenient threaded hole on the main girdle just past where the pickup is to bolt a bracket to reinforce it to.

Should be pretty straight forward to re-make it, those extra holes will come in handy for sure when making sure its going to be stout

The Pana's do have that more grown up look, really love the lip too. Since these are known to crack, once they do I'll be able to re-build them a bit more aggressive to fit even better!

Thanks, really happy with it overall! I got some hose separators that I threw on which really cleaned up the look in the engine bay. Still need another fitting added to the intake tube then It'll be complete.

For everyone who has completed it, its a very rewarding swap. I can't wait to drive the car again and have it be entirely different!

I've been part of that group since the beginning! Will be posting more over there as the car finally comes together.
Got my oil pan back today, officially time to finish this project! Jon at Future Fabrication took care of me and got the pickup and pan sorted.
Pickup was re-made using a Subaru OEM pickup as the base, this is a much better solution than the weird sandwiched CXRacing pickup and has proper bracing back to the girdle.
Some basic baffles were added to the bottom of the pan to keep the oil around the pickup. These along with the big oil cooler should keep the engine fed with nice cool oil regardless of what I'm doing.

I've got some time off work coming up and the weather is finally giving us a break out here. I am determined to get this car back on the road before the end of the year!
Ohhhh boy, what a shit show this oil pan has been. I ripped the subframe out of the car and installed the pan, really wasn't that bad of a job, but...

Well it simply isn't going to work. Pan sits at a super odd angle that does not match the factory pan. This puts the sump at an odd angle and the pan is hitting the steering rack. Should have measured this before I had baffles welded in and tried installing it, should have known it was a shit part from the get go. Setting it next to a stock upper/lower and checking the angle gives these results. Hopefully I can get the pan modified to fit, at this point I may as well considering the time and money I have spent trying...

After all of that frustration I decided to try and get the standalone sensors sorted. Remote block will fit perfectly on the passenger side under the cowl and hold the MAP, oil pressure and fuel pressure sensors. Picked up a bunch of push to lock fittings and plumbed up most of the vacuum system as well. Really like how these lines look and fit, may need some metal fittings off the wastegate, but we'll see.

And lastly I decided to test fit my Regamasters off my daily. They are 18x10 +35 square and fit the car incredibly. With an alignment, I think these will be perfect and let me run a meaty tire without fender clearance issues.

Bummer on the pan.
I do dig the remote sensor mount, might try something similar when the time comes.
