Hey everybody, thought there may be one or two who could take an interest in this so here goes.
I've previously owned an R33 GTST, 03 350Z track & SR20DET S13 track car
The car is a Saker GT (spaceframe kit car), in most cases they run a EJ20 but I'm more familiar with the SR platform so that is what we've opted to go with.
Specs wise the car should work out similar to the likes of a daytona prototype. Approx 950kg (2100lbs) fully laden with me in it and gas. Aiming for approx 600hp.
The car is setup with EVO 6 brembo brakes right around, I've just had a set of 2nd hand penske 8000 series shocks arrive for it. Also just ordered a rebuilt audi 01E transaxle for it and the plan is to order the remainder of the rotating assembly, studs and dry sump kit from mazworx in another month or so.
For more regular updates follow Vesuvius Racing on Facebook.
Now for some photos:
Here it is on the day we picked it up with the subaru drivetrain just sitting in place.

The vents on the guards had essentially just been stuck on so one of the first jobs was trying to flare them into the body work.
http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy78/nitromenace/13095972_1050948354952798_7566456003895266415_n_zp socmqrbqc.jpg
The rear cowling also didn't fit that well so we had to re-glass it and extend it. I have a sponsor who is going to tidy up the body and paint side of things so at this stage we're just trying to make everything fit "loosely".
http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy78/nitromenace/12472290_1038792052835095_665372788003726488_n_zps tw6hv696.jpg

We also extended the front splitter by 120mm and glassed in 20mm foam sandwhich for the under tray to give it some strength.
http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy78/nitromenace/12376625_1038792029501764_7921847625448749223_n_zp szpzn5sez.jpg
One of the next jobs was throwing the SR in to see how it was going to fit, to run a baffled sump wasn't going to work without seriously modifying the chassis and going to a dry sump will also enable us to lower the engine to get a better C.O.G. and give us more room for the cross braces coming down from the top of the fire wall.

Then we set to making up the diffuser and wing mounts, the idea was to try and make it somewhat resemble the Group C cars that it is loosely based on by making it more of a "long tail" deisgn.

Made up a bracket to mount the digital dash off the bosskit
http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy78/nitromenace/IMG_20160519_162708_zpswulianqw.jpg
Currently this is basically how it sits, rear bodywork still needs mounts made up to attach it properly.

Suspension is now bolted in but the mounting points still need some work.
Got the head shimmed the other night, all within spec now to suit the VZR cams.
Started mounting the seat, hopefully have that finished this week, nothing is "off the shelf".
Also made some mounting brackets to attach the rear bodywork and welded (and painted) pipes onto the chassis to give us some jacking points as the car is too low.
This is how it sits currently.

Damn, this is completely awesome.
This looks to be one of the quickest ways to a road-legal Group C car.

They're road legal both here(NZ) and in some of Europe, I intend to use it purely as a circuit racing car. They were first designed and built in 1989 hence the resemblance to the Group C era.

The moderators must be on holiday or something as some of my replies aren't getting through, hopefully this one does.
A minor update as It's been fairly hectic studying for my final trade exam and sorting out other stuff.
After 2 1/2 months I've finally got my paperwork for the roll cage homologation so she's all set to go.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy78/nitromenace/IMG_20160621_171356_zps4wjezwiz.jpg (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/nitromenace/media/IMG_20160621_171356_zps4wjezwiz.jpg.html)
Valve shims are setup to suit the VZR cams

Ground all the urethane off the chassis from the previous owners engine mounts he'd installed, was a bloody messy task.

Seat is also in and bolted up, anybody over 6ft tall would probably need a gurney buble to fit. Still needs to come back out and get modified slightly, aswell as get a coat of paint, not far away as it sits.

Gear ratios should work out to about this depending on what tyre size it ends up with. Shouldn't be far off the limiter in 5th at my local track once it gets 2bar of boost.

About time for another update, been studying for my final trade exam so haven't got a lot done.
They are road legal here in NZ and in some of Europe, but my M5 is enough of a handful on a wet road without trying to drive this thing. Figured it's better off being kept as being a dedicated track car so then you aren't compromising on anything.

Cheers guys, I've been trying to post another update for the last week but it isn't getting passed the moderators at this stage.
Trans has arrived, put it on the scales and it's 60kg dry. Not bad when you consider the weight of a Z33 box and an R200 diff combied.
These cars are road legal in NZ and in some of Europe, I'm keeping mine as a dedicated track car so there is no compromises as to what I can and can't do to it.
I'm busting major nut over here... Loving the idea and build so far.
What's the rough cost of one of those kits? I imagine the frame is already done, and you just put the body/drivetrain/susension/interior in? Their US based site is a little light on details.
This is something I'd definitely sell my S13 for as a balls out track car.
And good move ditching the EJ20! :D

I paid approx $15,000 USD for the car as I bought it in the first post, had been through a few owners, mostly elderly gentleman who had grand visions of what they would like to do with it but never completed it.
As far as what one costs out of the factory I'm not too sure, I've seen some pretty big numbers thrown around for complete ones. As you can appreciate there's a lot of man hours involved in something like this.
I had originally looked into using the newer style 6 speed STI gearbox behind the SR but the R180 diff and the idea of running a lockout spool to convert it to fwd was giving me nightmares. Once I found the site I got the 01E off I was sold, standard ratios were too tall for my application but what I've purchased worked out a treat plus it has a 10" cw&p so the diff shouldn't be an issue.

My posts with pictures still aren't getting passed the mods, how many posts do you have to make before you can post freely?
Anyway, it'll just have to be a picture free update:
This weekend I've basically got the adapter plate finished, just have to drop it off this week to get it cut out on the band saw and countersink a few more holes. (Jig saw cutting 12mm alloy is a bit tough for it)
I've got the center cut out so the flex plate fits, got the adapter plate recessed so that the starter motor will fit in the standard location. Trans and motor are all bolted together in one piece and doweled nicely, need to modify the bell housing on the trans slightly for the starter when it pops out.
Drivers seat is also roughly bolted in place, chassis rails have been cleaned back and the urethane removed so we can start working on motor mounts in the next week or so.
My order was also picked up from Mazworx the other day so I should see it in a few weeks and start getting the motor assembled.
You can see the photo's here: http://forums.nicoclub.com/sr20vet-saker-gt-build-t608950.html

10 i believe (not that youll ever see this as it seems their slightly slack on actually approving fresh posts 😅)
This things pretty rad, theres one of these thst gets out at mallala here in SA with some NA subie motor for a track toy. cool seeing a decent build thread for one.
That's lame that the posts aren't getting past mods. Maybe just spam some posts?
If you want to PM me the post with the img tags, I'll post it up for you in the meantime.

Thanks for your offer, I'll take you up on that.
Started setting up the motor and box in the car today and working out what we're going to do for engine & trans mounts. The motor is on a steep angle but being dry sumped it won't be an issue.
Looking at the way the DET top mount exhaust manifold sits we'll more than likely abandon that and make a custom low mount one, for the sake of space and keeping the C.O.G. down. Could have lowered the engine down further but it just looked ridiculous, lowering the trans would mean the axles would be on a rather steep angle, as it is they're on slightly up hill. This is part of the reason they run EJ20's as they have a high crankshaft in relative terms.
Pics incoming...

Fingers crossed this gets passed the mods.
My order from Mazworx was delayed by a few weeks and only left a couple of days ago but I should have it in 10 days or so.
In the mean time I ordered a few other bits and pieces to keep me busy.
Made up some brackets to mount the intercoolers and oil cooler, still need to make some shrouds to stop the air from bleeding off around the sides and we should have some pipes here this week to start joining things up, can't finish it untill we have the manifolds in place and the turbo.

Also started working out how we'll mount the harness in and what is required to modify the seat, have the chief scrutineer coming around this week to discuss that and getting a custom fuel cell made to fit in behind the drivers seat.

Radiator also showed up so that's also on the to do list to make some mounting brackets for that and then some brake ducting etc.

Also made some inquiries with DSS and cableshift.com in regards to getting the shifter setup and getting some axles to suit the trans and subie hubs.

What'd you do to insure that everything was centered when you made the adapter plate?

Thanks gents, I got an adapter made to go over the input shaft and slide into the back of the crankshaft. That allowed us to center the trans/motor and then dowel the trans to set it at the angle we wanted. From there it was as simple as deciding what bolt holes we could use and drilling everything to suit.

Also modified the bell housing to accomodate the starter drive gear in the standard SR location.

Made a start on the shrouds for the intercoolers and radiator, Radiator one still needs a little bit of modifying and then make some mounts for the radiator itself. Hopefully get that done this weekend.

Also got the seat and mounts well on the way for mounting the harness through them, had to widen and strengthen the top a bit for piece of mind and to get the belts at the right width apart.
Shipment also showed up finally, the moment of truth was getting the inlet manifold in position and confirming my fears that it will need some modification to clear the firewall. Will shorten the plenum and the Q45 TB a little so we can get enough room to fit a 3.5" bend infront and line everything up.
Also won't be able to fit the dry sump tank where I'd originally planned but I've found a solution just unfortunately means I'll have to route the lines back and forth across the firewall.

Why not flip the plenum and having the plumbing come from the "backside" of the motor? It would be pretty simple seeing as the plenum is just a "cap" so to speak. This would save you from having to hack it up.

That was my original plan but I still have to fit the exhaust down that side and I don't really want to be running the inlet piping and exhaust one on top of the other, plus I also start to get limited by the bodywork and intercooler piping as I've got the two sidemounts in parallel which means we make the already "long" piping another meter and a half longer.
Don't mean to cry ya down, it is something we'd seriously considered.

Have you guys considered using a air to water intercooler setup? Would save you considerable length of intercooler piping and AN lines are a whole lot easier to run than aluminum pipe.
Deezal
08-04-2016, 07:56 PM
Yes that was what I originally planned to do but from the research I'd done there wasn't much positive feedback for a water to air intercooler after 15 mins of flat out driving, the general consensus was it gets too much heat soak and your IAT's will be hotter as a result. A seperate 300x300 radiator was going to be limited in what it could do.
Would have been a lot less work though.
You worried about the Audi trans holding up to that much torque? Seems they're a little iffy over 300 tq to the wheels.
Deezal
08-22-2016, 11:19 PM
The fwd transmissions are stronger than the quattro ones as they've got solid shafts in them, not hollow like the quattro and mine has a cryo treated main shaft plus the later model wide 1st gear so in theory it should be alright. I doubt I'll see anything over 400LB-FT at the wheels anyway.
Just picked up a few more bits and pieces tonight so should have another update in a day or 2.

Got the seat finished, just need the mount in the floor now for the crotch belt. Door cards, internal door releases and door close straps are all done now also. Plenum and IC pipes are also welded up and I've started to give them a bit of a polish up. Dry sump tank and breather tank are also bolted up, now just need to weld some mounts onto the chassis to bolt the backing plate too and give the coolers a flush. Also got the drivers side radiator pipe bent to suit so that will run through the suspension out to the radiator.
Dad drew the flywheel up last week and I've just ordered the ecu and fuel pumps etc so that's another few things ticked off the hit list. For the sake of simplicity and fuel volume now though I think I'll have to run a traditional fuel cell in the passengers side of the car instead of trying to run a passengers seat and get a custom alloy tank made to fit behind the seats and seal that off.

Progress has been a bit slow, the old saying of two steps forward one step back definitely rings true. Turbo, BOV and FPR showed up courtesy of Rapid last week but as suspected it sits too high to fit under the chassis so now I'm looking into getting a custom "top mount" twin scroll manifold to drop the turbo down to where I'd like it. In the process of working out how much room we've got I realised the alternator doesn't fit so now I'll have to make an adapter to move the relocation bracket up 30mm to allow the alternator to clear the chassis rail.
Thanks to Anthony from Ralston Sheetmetal I've got most of the IC piping in and polished up again, obviously can't finish that untill we have the final location of the turbo.
Got the reservoirs for the shocks mounted up, fuel pump brackets have many uses. Rear view camera also showed up so got the screen mounted on the dash.

Felt like a kid at Christmas the last few days, flywheel is now finished and ready to be sent off to get balanced with the rest of the rotating assembly. G4 storm, coils, fuel pumps, surge tank, breather bottle, fuel cell, radiator pipes etc have all shown up aswell as the radiator duct and the intake cowling so I've got plenty to do for the next few weeks.
Flywheel is only 7.8kg (17lbs) which isn't bad at all given how deep it is to get the twin plate clutch to fit on the spline of the input shaft.

Got a bit more done lately, the intake scoop on the rear cowling and the radiator vent and deflector on the front so now she should be able to breathe.
Also made a start on the exhaust manifold, will have to modify the motor mount slightly to get clearance on cylinder no#2 otherwise it should tidy up okay given how limited we are for space.
Also had the clutch and a few other parts show up as well as the slicks, the wheels should be underway courtesy of 41 degree wheels either this week or next.
Doesn't look like it'll be ready for the December meeting like I'd hoped but we'll have plenty of time to get it ready to rock for Speedfest in February.

Time for a pre Bathurst update. Got the manifold as good as finished, just need to plumb up the wastegate. As a result I've got the piping sorted out to go to the pod filter and will be finishing off the intercooler piping up to the turbo in the coming days.
The last of my parts have also arrived from the states, M300 custom axles to go between the subaru hubs and audi trans aswell as the cable shift setup, the mounting brackets for the trans took a little modification but got pretty good feel with the shifter now.
Also got most of the radiator piping sorted out and a custom reservoir all cut up and ready to get welded.
Wing uprights have been galved and painted and will have most of the bodywork around to Dean Howden to get tidied up in the next week or two.

My pleasure, glad people are finding it interesting.
About time for another update, I'd been holding off till I got a few other items finished but as is always the way with builds of this nature, something always slows ya down.
Huge thanks to Dean Howden for getting the first half of the car painted, now it's just a case of getting the remainder of the car finished and dropping it off in the new year to get tidied up.
Courtesy of Limitless motorsport my new precision wastegate and plazmaclamp have also showed up which enabled me to finish off the intercooler piping. We're in the midst of finishing off the exhaust manifold but given the space constraints and size of the wastegate it's taking some time to get it right.
I've also mocked up the enclosure for the fuel cell which Ralston's are fabricating for me at the moment and opted to move the surge tank and fuel pumps to the engine bay and leave the lift pump in the enclosure with the fuel cell.
Gary from Probuilt Engines has also finished setting up the bottom end for me and between Dad and I have started assembling the remainder of the motor. Hope to have it finished in the next week or so depending on what takes priority.
Another job I've started on is mocking up the switch panel for the car and mounting the ecu, saving the wiring till last as I'm dreading it a little. Got the fuel, oil and vacuum lines all planned out.
Replaced the old rubber brake lines with new braided ones and greased and assembled the hubs/wheel bearings.
Another big thanks to The Driveshaft Shop, after my custom axles showing up from the states and finding they'd stuffed up the lengths, they got another one landed in Invercargill in a couple of weeks and now everything fits a treat.

Finally got the exhaust manifold finished off, the precision 66mm gate proved to be difficult to find space for but still a lot easier than 2 38's.
Started plumbing up the fuel and oil system, got the coils in and mounted up. Welded tags on to mount the dry sump tank and breather.
Also got the motor 90℅ together, still need a few bits and pieces to finish it off. All going well I hope to have it in the car this coming weekend and get the clutch and trans setup.
The first of the wheels showed up from 41 degrees just to check the measurements before it gets tidied up and the rest are made to suit.
Slowly getting closer.

Found that the clutch won't fit in the trans as it hits the housing for the diff so will hopefully get the flywheel machined down 5mm during the week so everything fits like it should as we had the first clutch plate approx 5mm onto the input shaft anyway.
Decided to slap the trans on anyway and get everything in the car for the first time. Huge thanks to Anthony from Ralston sheetmetal for getting the intercooler and water piping welded up for me, only a few things left to tidy up. Then it's just a case of flushing it all out and clamping it down.
Got the fuel feed and return lines from the fuel rail done aswell so half the fuel system is plumbed up.
Dash and switch panel are now vinyl wrapped black which made a huge difference, got the boost controller mounted and tabs welded on to mount the switch panel. Just a case of painting and drilling it out to suit now. Another job done was getting the conduits in and mounted for running the wiring, vacuum lines and throttle cable through to the engine bay. Also got an extra bit of box section welded in the passenger's side to give me more fixing points for when the fuel cell goes in there next weekend hopefully.
Notched the chassis rail to get enough clearance for the alternator to fit, and modified the P10 throttle pedal to make it a floor mount so it sits nicely next to the wilwood pedal box.

was that an F430 engine sitting in the garage?

Yeah I was skeptical about keeping it 4 stud, it made no difference to the wheel selection as buying 16x10 and 16x11 wheels I had no choice but to get custom 3 piece wheels anyway. The cars were originally setup with datsun front hubs when the first one was built in the late 80's and hasn't been changed since so they're 4x114.3. It will end up with 2 piece rotors etc later on, came with the evo 6 Brembo's on it so I'm just going to see how it goes with them for a start and work out from there what is the best solution moving forward.
The engine in the background is out of a 575M, the guy I bought it off intended on using that in the car but for racing purposes I couldn't even contemplate the thought of maintaining it and the space constraints involved in fitting it. He basically threw it in as he was sick of it sitting around his garage, been trying to sell it for a few months now as the VE has costed a hell of a lot more than what I'll get for the V12.

Roughly 10-14k USD on most of the European wreckers websites. The ones on eBay are overpriced.

Hi everybody, long time between updates but it's not due to getting nothing done.
Weight as pictured was 880kg with 20L of gas in it.
Fuel and oil system's are finished.
Wiring is as good as done, all the essential things are finished. Except for possibly needing to reroute the cas wiring.
You'll see from the boost curve it appears to be a combination of exhaust runners being too large for the length and wastegate being too big as the boost curve follows the HP.
Going back to the cas wiring, the car wouldn't cleanly rev past about 7000rpm on the dyno. Believe it's an interference issue at this stage. Tried earthing out the screen at the cas end directly to the block but it didn't fix the issue.

For running so much boost a small 38mm wastegate should work just fine.
What size gate did you go with?? Also, at 700HP, the larger runners should not have such a drastic affect on spoolup.
Other things may be a play here as well. Not sure if only the gate is the issue here, especially since you have having issues with the CAS. If you have timing drift due to incorrect readings from the CAS, that could affect your cam phasing which could very well be negatively impacting spool.
I would get that sorted first (since it may very be the cheapest way) and go from there.

Thanks guys, that's why there hasn't been any updates as such. Been too busy getting stuff done, been roughly 30-40 hours a week after work for the last 6-8 weeks.
I know you'll tell me it's too big, running a 66mm precision gate but have tried running it at the track with it free boosting and it made no difference, was pulling 25psi at 5500rpm. Checked with the company who supplied the turbo today and they made a manifold using the same size runners for somebody else using the same turbo. Design isn't ideal as we were space limited but it's a damn sight better than a log. Wastegate loses like 20-30% of its area with the two pipes merging into the wastegate. Typical twin scroll setup is 2 38's and I've ended up with similar area to that.
Tried rerouting the cas out the passengers window and removing it from the engine loom and it made no difference. Next test will be to try extra earths off the coils to the block. The cas itself is brand new from nissan and has a pretty good fit in the back of the cam. Getting it back from the body shop tomorrow and will get the side windows in and tidy up a few things and go from there. Long weekend for me so will try and hire the track for all 3 days. Running 16VE cams they might have too much overlap which may also be causing issues with exhaust flow in the mid range.

As always there's never a dull moment. Over the last couple of weeks we've had the car out a couple of times. Had issues with the trans blowing oil out the breather so have put a catch can on that. Blew 2 frost plugs out, one of the back of the head and one out of the back of the block. Melted the plug on the boost controller which fried the board in it so it's been sent to aussie. Found the wheels were just hitting the shock canisters on full lock so also had to make new mounting brackets for them to keep them out of harms way.
Then last week the guide sleeve for the release bearing worked itself loose, would appear as though when it was assembled in the US one of the threads was stripped and it has fretted on the other two till they let go and jammed the guide in the release bearing and tried to take the diaphragm out of the clutch.
All of which has now been sorted except for the boost controller as I've just put a bleed valve in. Also replaced the brake cylinders to try and get better feel. Wheels finally showed up and got the tyres mounted but have no found I've got next to no clearance to the calipers so have attacked the calipers with a belt sander.
Replaced the trigger wheel in the cas with a 24 tooth equivalent and recalibrated the ECU aswell as installing some MSD superconductor plug leads which appears to have fixed my missfire issue at 7200rpm and it will now pull past 8000 without load. Will find out tomorrow night what it does with load on it.
Also fabbed up a new header tank to help prevent the cooling system sucking air in as on the first iteration the neck was too close to the top so if any air came out and the water level dropped it would suck air into the back of the head.
Got the car corner balanced tonight and it sat at 58% weight to the rear and 966kg with me in it and the front/back off the car. That's with the undertrays on and 35-40L of gas onboard.

The frost plugs that I blew out were in the water galleries not the oil. You'd think it would try and blow off hoses first if the headgasket wasn't sealing properly. Find out tonight if it's still doing it.

Unbelievable progress, congrats on getting the power put down. If you're still having issues with the CAS is suggest a hall type sensor similar to what the engineering2slide guy uses on his SRs

Yeah a hall effect kit is the next option if I'm still having issues. Wanted to try and make the cas work as I haven't got the time at the moment to be pulling the head off and getting it setup for the sensor.
As far as harnessing the power, needed 5th gear on the dyno to get it to stop wheel spinning

Had it on the dyno ironing out some kinks both nights before the race meeting, found it was pushing water out but that was due to air locks in the head so we've added a bleeder in the frost plug which goes up to the top of the water gallery. Replacing the trigger wheel with a 24 tooth unit and making new MSD leads up for it appears to have fixed the missfire also and it now revs out like it's supposed too.
Qualifying went without a hitch. In race 1 I DNF'd due to broken wires on the TPS. Race 2 I started 34th and finished 7th after battling through some heavy traffic.
Saturday night I wound some more wing angle on and dropped the front splitter down but I wound it too far so between that and the spring perches unwinding on the track it wore over half the front splitter though in the 3rd race as I got from 7th up to 4th after a good battle with a V8 ford Capri. There was a lot of vibration coming back through the car though with it bottoming out which made it rather awkward to drive.
Last race of the day I DNF'd but managed to drop another 1.8 seconds off my time from qualifying and had a great tussle with the 358CI nascar powered falcon. The DNF was a result of a fuel line which had vibrated loose and lost fuel pressure as a result. When I pulled into the pits the fuel vapor ignited and I ended up with a small fire in the engine bay. Thankfully it was quickly extinguished.

Cheers. Had it back on track last weekend and again this evening. No issues tonight but as you just mentioned I did have another little fire during the weekend. After my issues with trying to get it going again after the last fire I'd flooded it and ended up with a bit of enthanol in the oil which ended up in the breather tank for the dry sump and the fumes ignited so I've now moved the breather to the intake side of the engine. On the plus side I was roughly a second faster just out there testing than in the last race meeting and there's still so much left in it. That was running at approx 23psi, slightly less than the last race day.
Will have a lengthy update next week with some pics and hopefully some onboard footage also.
I update the facebook page more regularly, Vesuvius Racing.

So it's been fairly busy over the last few weeks fixing various little issues and creating more... Made some new shock mounts and altered the rear ones, move the breather for the dry sump tank etc.
Found that the VVL wasn't working on the intake cam last night, so with that sorted again it made a significant improvement to the performance on track today.
As far as the other issues are concerned, the wiring for the cas had got that hot it had shorted together so the car wouldn't start and a few of the other sensors were giving funny reading so I replaced those. Found that the main fuse for the ECU had blown but was still conducting 9.5V across it as it had a very high resistance connection. As soon as it had any load it would just brake down and run terribly, that was a tricky one to track down.
Today I ended up with an oil leak in qualifying and some overheating issues. Still managed to stick it on P4, Only got a few laps in before the overheating started to flare up again and then we realised why the handling was so terrible. It wasn't due to the oil on the tyres, it was as a result of the bolts holding the 3 pieces wheels together braking and quite a few of the others are loose. The right rear went completely flat and the front was down around 15-20psi also.
To top it off we found the exhaust side motor mount has torn into 2 pieces, so that's another thing to add to the list.

Overdue for another update.
After the last race meeting we also found a few other little issues, one of the major's was the fact that the exhaust side motor mount had been incinerated and torn itself in half which is presumably why the engine has been hitting the chassis. Have now replaced it with a jockey wheel and a bolt through it to make it more rigid and added a heat shield.
Also pulled all the wheels apart a few weeks ago and replaced all the cap screws holding them together, found 1-4 on every wheel where the threads had bound up so I'm glad I did the whole lot. Had to replace the right rear tyre as the sidewall had let go after running it half flat.
A few other alterations we'd made before the last meeting was the lagging on the exhaust, head shield for the cas and added DRL's to help make it easier for people to spot me in their mirrors given the roof line is less than 1m.
Made a new fitting up for the frost plug and got Anthony to weld an extra plate of alloy on the side of the header tank so I could tap another fitting in. Now there's a constant circulation through the 8mm hose back to the tank so in theory it will bleed the air out of the head itself.
All going well I'll get it back out for a wee test to make sure all is good before it gets parked up for a couple of months. Just heard back from the organisers running the sprint series at Highlands and it sounds as though I'll be eligible for that next season. http://www.highlands.co.nz/

Been a bit lazy getting this updated. Been tidying up some of the bodywork and modifying bits and pieces. The front splitter is almost ready for some undercoat after reglassing a more foam onto it and building it back up again. This time it will be certainly getting nylon rub strips under it before it goes back on the track.
Added more glass in around the intake scoop as it was cracking from the loads at the end of the straight and have built the glass back up from where the gel coat let go due to the 2nd fire.
Also had it back on the polytec dyno and have decided to replace the head gasket for piece of mind as we suspected it may have had small leak.
Got the motor stripped down and threw the Kelford cams, new head gasket and rod bearings in this week. Plan is to have it back on the dyno for a retune next month and get the record back for the highest output 4cyl on the APET dyno as well as getting a lot more mid range. Head gasket had been leaking and the head needed 2.5 thou cleaned off it but she should be ready to rock again now. Bearings still looked like new which was a nice bonus.
Numerous little updates planned as far as a new twin element wing which is currently under construction and to complement that I'm going to make some new tunnels through the front of the car. Also going to get a new sway bar made up as the existing one can't be adjusted from where it is. Also just giving the chassis and bodywork a little bit of a tidy up since everything is in bits, finally flaring the vents into the side of the bodywork as I hated the way they were essentially just stuck on the surface.
Few other things in the pipeline as far as finishing the graphic design for it and getting the blower/wiper etc mounted and working as being in Southland I'm sure it'll get used.

Hi guys, I've been getting chased to put up some updates. Been a bit slack after photobucket decided they wanted everybody to pay $400 for the privilege of 3rd party image sharing.
Found an alternative now so here's a little update of what's been happening recently.
Got the trusty SR running again a few months back, 1st crank on the starter and she burst into life.
Made some good progress on the bodywork also, got the rear bodywork tidied up again but that all deformed where it was on fire above the turbo as the structural integrity of the glass is compromised and have just had to fix it again and put a heat shield in underneath.
Also rehashed the front splitter a few times after it getting severely worn at the first race meeting and modified the pickup points and changed the way the threaded rods mount through the splitter. Also added some nylon rub strips underneath to maintain airflow under the car and help prevent further damage.
Got a new double element rear wing made up also in carbon/foam, based off a profile dauntless racing cars were using. 250mm main chord and 110mm secondary that's 1.8m wide.
In the midst of mounting up my windscreen demister under the dash and modifying the accelerator pedal to make it wider and give it some more feel. Also added some grip tape on the floor.
Got a new sway bar made up so now I can actually adjust it as the other one was hopeless in that respect.
Had it on the dyno a month ago and made 700RWHP and 480lb-ft (approx 800 flywheel hp and 520lb-ft) on 28PSI with the new kelford cams installed.
Still slow building boost, believe it's because we have the low lobes set on the high lobe centerlines as there's no mention of them being different on the spec sheets or which center it refers to. We'd assumed it was the base setting for split timing it. Will retune with them on the right centerlines next year.
Had the car at the track for the first time since March there a couple weeks back and even on 17psi on a greasy track it was only 1 second off my PB so it should be interesting to see what I can get out of it in another fortnight for the first race meeting. With my new Gopro 5 having on board telemetry it will be interesting to have some data overlay on my onboard videos.
Also got sent a CAD file the other night to play around with, it's just a basic silhouette so will try and add more detail to it over the coming months and try and do some basic CFD analysis of my own as I've got a few more ideas in mind for aero advancements.

Finally got the formatting sorted out, all the images fit properly now.
Should have new springs to throw in it at the end of the week, up to 700lb fronts and 850 rears to try and stop it bottoming out. Got 70mm clearance to the chassis at the front and 80mm at the back and under braking it was bottoming out at 65mm, lifted it up and cranked the bump stiffness up on the shocks to get a decent run out of it.
With the self bleeder off the back of the head it was maintaining 80degC on 20psi and purring along beautifully, pulling 250kph (155mph) and still braking pretty early seeing as we can hire the track with no safety crews or anything on site. All you need is to have a spotter out there with you.
Youtube links still won't embed no matter what I do.

Unfortunately pulled the pin on the race meeting today as the forecast was for 25mm of rain and wasn't that keen on learning to drive it in the wet in those conditions so opted to leave it on the trailer. Am now doing an event at a track I've never competed on before in 2 weeks (Ruapuna - some of you may have seen it on videogames eg. project cars) so hope to have the car back out this weekend to make sure she's all good to go. Then it's off to Highlands Oct 7th and home again to watch bathurst on the 8th.

Had the car out on Saturday before the round at Ruapuna but wasn't too thrilled with the handling characteristics so was busy making changes. Unfortunately I had no further opportunities for testing so will just had to drive the ass off it In qualifying regardless of how it is after making these adjustments. Modified the mount for the throttle cable to shorten the throw and make it easier to heel and toe, changed the rear shocks mounts top and bottom to get more droop. Also found the shock canisters a little low on pressure with the left rear being completely empty and changed the mounts for the swaybar.
Didn't get a chance to go any faster than a 1.29.4 had gear change issues for the last 2 races. Only running 18psi so the porsche cup car had far more straight line speed especially having a sequential. Within half a second for my first time up here isn't too bad, would definitely have liked to have found another few seconds. Potential is definitely there, untill next time.
Whipped the trans and clutch off after the meeting and couldn't fault anything mechanically in there. Have changed to motul 75W140 in the trans due to the temps we were seeing and think that may be the issue, the diff likes it but it may be too thick for the trans especially at those rpm's. Will change it back out and see if the problems go away.
As for the gearing through the infield I spoke with Link and found out that with my ecu setup the way I have it it starts to soft limit a few hundred rpm before the limit I've set which is why I'm 10kph below my calculated speeds on the GPS. Have now lifted the limit to compensate which should also help with the powerband allowing it to wind further past peak power.
Have CV boots as the inner one is well and truly stuffed and finish cleaning all the grease up. See if I can get some better balance and get those peak lateral G's closer to 2.5
Onwards and upwards!
Had the car back out to see what was going on with the trans issues, after changing back to the 75W90 it was heaps better but still occasionally playing up but noticed when adjusting the shift cables that the pivot bracket the cables go onto was rotating independently of the selector. Have since pulled it apart and found the roll pin that locks on the tapered flat on the underside of the selector was bent and allowing it to rotate stopping the selector from getting full travel. Have thrown a new pin in it and it should be all sorted.
Also had the header tank welded up again as it's cracked down either side of the neck.

Diffuser looks like it's doing its job looking at the oil trails running through the tunnels. I think the shape of the oil in the outer tunnels is that way from the vortex generated off the edge of the flat floor under the engine as that's roughly the angle it comes back on.
Some footage of race 1 before I kicked the throttle cable off the pedal.
Looking back at this it wouldn't take much to find a second more if not 2 just from braking points and corner speed and then wind the wick up.
Rather uneventful to watch but interesting to finally have some telemetry overlay, the handicap would have been good if not for my gear change issues coming back on lap 2. Should have been right in the hunt for the win.

Will wind a little more boost up it for this weekend, pretty low speed track. Maxed out in 3rd for most of the straights and I doubt I'll exceed 200kph on this configuration we're running.
Appreciate you sorting out the link. I wish I knew why I keep getting those silly error messages.

Hopefully between the build video I threw together and my facebook page it will keep you satisfied.
Will get an update together over the next day or two. Was a bit of a non event at Highlands but has given me a well needed kick in the ass to sort a few underlying issues out and get on top of things.
This is awesome...
Any worries on the gearbox holding the torque?
Also, your VVL cam change sounds pretty late, where the turbo has already built up some boost. I found you want to change it right as you start getting reasonable positive pressure in the intake manifold. You can't just do a sweep on the low lobes and then on the high lobes and pick the point via that, as the turbo will be a dog coming into boost down at low RPM on the high lobes. You've got to use the low lobes to get the turbo somewhat up to speed, then the high overlap and early exhaust valve opening of the high lobes will make it really come on boost quickly.
If you still have trouble getting the boost to come in earlier, I'd probably go to a tighter turbine housing A/R, as I think another few hundred RPM of powerband in the midrange is going to make you faster than a tad more power on the very top of the powerband based on how the car drives. It seems slowest compared to other cars coming out of corners, and it's easy to miss how much time that costs you on a turbo car. Versus I think you're looking at maybe a tenth a second max per lap if you took off 20-30 HP up top.

Cheers, yes I am a little paranoid about how much more power I can get out of it but speaking to another tune shop last week confirmed my suspicions that the dyno my car is tuned on is rather optimistic. In reality it's more like 550WHP and quite peaky at that as you've just made mention to. It's not the VVL you're hearing switch that late, that's the wastegate opening. That's how lazy it is building boost. The transaxle has a 10" diff in it and had the back off it when I was having shifting issues and everything still looks like new in there.
After having the car away 10 days ago and getting smoked by 200HP honda's off hairpins I pulled the motor out and got the info from Kelford to get the cams on the right centerline's. Inlet was out by 6 degrees and 12 degrees on the exhaust as we'd worked off the high lobe centers on the spec sheet thinking that's what we were after. With the engine mounted the way it is you can't do it in the car.
Then got it out for a quick test on track Thursday last week, had unfortunately damaged the wastegate lines getting the motor in and out so it was free boosting. Definitely had far better spool than previously, booked to go back on the dyno next Saturday and see how much we've achieved. Tune is far enough out that I'm not keen on trying to road tune it at that boost level.

Was a mixed back at Highlands, will have to put a grub screw into the shifter pivot to lock it onto the selector as it gave me grief again in the morning.
Qualified on P2, the warm up lap for the first race was that slow I couldn't get any temp in anything and went off on the first lap at the hairpin as it wouldn't stop while trying to retake my starting position after avoiding other people on the first turn. Was almost back through the field when I tried to make a move down the inside on the LS powered RX7 and ran out of space, tried to pull back out and tangled wheel to wheel which put me out for the rest of the day as we couldn't get a tyre on the spare wheel before we came up. Also gave the bottom arm a good tweak. I'll take some of the blame as it pinched the front right which I'd already flat spotted quite badly going into the 2nd hairpin infront of the museum in qualifying.
Had a spare outer at home so have swapped that over and glued it back up, will have a tyre back on it next week.
Definitely need to fix the spool issue before I go back up there as it's lucky to have 100wkw coming off the corners, trying to pass 200hp Honda's and they were going back passed untill I could get it spooled and to go down a gear it was too short. Was going bloody nice through the high speed left hander through the trees, apex speed around 185-190. With some more confidence I firmly believe I can go through there flat at 200+.
Have also found I'm getting quite a bit of flex in the rear hubs and the brake rotors are eating the sides out of the bottom ball joint carriers. Job for next week to work out what's causing that.
On top of that, have found I'm another victim of the notorious cracked Mazworx inlet manifolds, runners for cylinder 2 and 4 2/3 of the way around where it attaches to the head flange. Getting them welded back up and will get the mounting face machined as I found it has 0.5mm deflection in it.

The cracked manifold could have been one of your reasons for such slow spool this whole time. The turbo and wastegate was having to overcome the pressure loss.

Only hairline cracks through the outer surface of the welds, not right through the runners. More cosmetic than anything but I'd rather not leave it to get any worse.

Fairly successful day on the dyno, made 565RWKW = 758RWHP There's been plenty of discussion about how generous this dyno is but I'm happy to lay claim it's a healthy 700hp at the fly any day of the week on 27psi. Took the 2wd record, 5kw more than a 2JZ MK4 supra on 4psi more boost than the JZ. Was going to run more boost but on a standard bore I thought we were reaching the limit as it was starting to breathe quite heavily so called it a day. Remembered when I got home that I hadn't drained the breather out so it was half full of ethanol after trying to get it started... Oh well
Definitely made a huge difference for spool moving the cams after getting the info off kelford for the low lobes. Moved the exhaust cam 12degrees and the inlet 6.
You'll also see the boost curve is a lot flatter on 22psi which is where it will be spending most of its time. 3rd graph is an overlay from last time, both on 60% duty cycle.
Should haul off corners far better now!

Big thanks to the guys at Ralston Sheetmetal and Probuilt engines for getting the inlet manifold and a few other things tidied up this week and milling the manifold flange to get the car on the dyno today. Hopefully the runners don't crack again now that it's all squared up.
Made some PTFE lines for the wastegate today so I can get rid of all the nuisance rubber lines I had been using.
Top element for the rear wing is getting an extra layer of carbon wrapped around it as it was getting a little bit of twisting action going on at speed.
Next major item on the hit list is sorting out the suspension arms and hubs. Thinking it may need billet hubs in the back at least. Rear wheels were moving over 10mm forward on the dyno today and we've also noticed that the rotors have been giving the bottom ball joint carriers a touch up. Joys of pioneering something that was never designed to take the power it's being submitted too.

Had the car back out a little over a week ago, unfortunately the new hubs and bottom A arms weren't ready so had to make do.
Qualified on Pole and won the first and second races convincingly.
Unfortunately kicked the throttle cable off the accelerator pedal half way through the 3rd race so DNF'd that one, definitely need to modify how it mounts to the pedal as my extra 2 cable ties to help hold it in clearly isn't enough to cut it. Have since made a bracket to hold the crimp on the end of the throttle cable so it's locked in place and won't allow the rubber retainer to be able to shoot out the side.
Won the last race of the day quite comfortably in a heavily reduced field. Best lap times for the first 3 races were within about a tenth of one another and then managed to get another 4 tenths in the last race to get down to a 61.7 as the track started to come back as the day cooled off. I suppose 1 tenth off my official PB on 8psi less boost on a slow track wasn't too bad. Whole new car to drive now with more throttle response.
With my corner speed still lacking to what I wanted I never bothered to wind up the Boost, best times of the day were on 16PSI. Approx 450hp, was enough to keep the supercharged LS7 corvette behind to the loop so no point in giving it anymore.
Now for some soul searching and a new set of tyres for speedfest and see if I can find another 10+kph around the loop.
Below is footage of race 2 as I didn't get the farewell recorded, obviously knocked a button and ended up with a 2000 photo time lapse of the race.

Update time again gentlemen, hasn't been too much happen in the last 2 months just the usual mad rush now to make sure everything is ready to rock for next weekend.
The hubs and new bottom A arms are finally in and finished. Had the car out last night and unofficially beat my PB by over a second just testing. Only would it up to 19psi for the last 2 laps before we threw it in the trailer. All new rubber going on for race day as the tyres are over a year old now and have done all the miles the car has done since the first race day.
Huge thanks to Wayne and Des from MPE for looking after me on getting the hubs and arms sorted out, was a good test for the new Haas CNC machine, machined out of billet 4140. Arms are now the thickest wall molly in that size and we've done away with the ball joint and gone to a spherical bearing on the bottom also. Made the plywood jig at home to keep the geometry as close to the same as possible and setup the arms/hubs and ensure everything would bolt straight in.
Also swapped out the master cylinder for the rear brakes to try and get more rear braking as we had the bias bar maxed out. Numerous other little tidy up jobs on the go also, car is the best it's been without a doubt. Just got to get the rear grip back again...

Cheers, racing 3 weeks ago was a dud. Alternator had failed for qualifying and didn't even make it 1 lap on 6 volts as it wouldn't even fire the coils, the car draws 30A at idle. Then for race one the throttle jammed on the warm up lap as I was a bit rough on it and bent the bracket for the throttle cable. Started off the back for the first race on Sunday and the brakes felt pretty average from the beginning, found after the race that both front brake rotors had pretty big cracks in them. 2 seconds slower than in testing with a best lap of a 1.02.4
Took 2 laps for the new tyres to come on song but after they did it wasn't feeling too bad.
If nothing else the old SR20 was going nicely, the old Dawker Camaro is a healthy 700hp and managed to get Jeremy to the line by .001 from a good 4 car lengths back.

The brakes were one of the only things on the car when I bought it, found that the rotors are off a Mitsubishi 3000GT so off the shelf performance ones are out of the question. Got some DBA rotors and custom hats machined to suit to replace those.
Today on the other hand was far more successful, achieved my first major milestone. Broke the minute barrier 3 laps in a row, got a few laps in on the wastegate to get the car to a point I was happy which almost had me there and then dropped the tyre pressures a little and threw 19psi at it. The new DBA rotors with custom hats made the brake pedal feel a lot better, still got to get more accustomed to the complete lack of feedback in the pedal. A bit more confidence makes a huge difference in being able to push the car.
Only real drama was the left rear tyre now has a nice chunk missing out of it somehow? Have to get another one, and tidy up a few little things for Highlands in a months time and we'll be away laughing.
Doing a sub 60 for real will have to wait for next season.
For reference the best of the weekend warriors in 997/991 Porsche cup cars do about the same times I was doing today. Pro's are roughly a second faster on soft tyres.

Cheers, I kinda forgot all about updating this. Got some far more realistic power figures now, did 570whp on a mainline at 31psi on a 2nd gen Precision 6062. Far more responsive than the old Holset, just had a race day on sunday. 2 2nd places and 2 1st places plus the round win. No footage worth uploading as the day was pretty miserable, Next race day is in a months time.

I got the precision at cost, so I really can't complain. Supposedly every bit as capable as a GTX3576 and it's a lot better than the holset I had before. I couldn't justify the extra cost of going to a EFR and butchering a lot of what I've already done. If I was starting from scatch again though I would have genuinely considered it.

Hey guys, been a while. In the december meeting the head lost the head off a valve which then took out another 2 valves and more or less destroyed that engine.
The only bits we saved without having to give them at least a little TLC were the crank and the valve springs. On the plus side I now have a lot more spares...

Full rebuild and 2 months later we had it back on track for the classic speedfest. Qualified on pole but lost my time due to a transponder issue so started 8th. Caught my brothers R32 mid race and stuck with him through traffic. Now had custom Manley 1mm O/S valves instead of the standard ones which everyone assured me could handle the heat?
Car is a lot better in the handling department now after some major spring rate changes and other minor adjustments.

Race 2 was a wet race, started on pole and drove away from the field.
Race 3 I started on pole again and set another PB on Lap 3, Lap 4 would have been faster again if not for getting a little loose through turn 2. On pace now with Factory spec GT3 cars in race trim.

Race 4 I lined up beside the 750hp VQ35HR turbo toyota levin, he keeped creeping on the start and as soon as the lights went out I nailed it but found the rev limiter almost straight away. He had no such issues, especially having a sequential. Managed to pass him on the outside through turn 2 and manage the gap till the end. Brakes & tyres went off big time mid race.
