Recently went to a drift event with my car. Car ran great most the day, engine has always had an intermittent knock/head noise. anyways

s14 sr20, 9:1 compression (unknown pistons ) 2871, and basic upgrades with a apexi power FC commander.

I pulled off the track because i heard a nasty knocking from what sounded like the head, I idled off the track and there wasn't much of a noise at idle, but when i gave it any gas above 1200rpm it would make a nasty knock/ slapping noise. Kinda figured it was a rocker, but I inspected them now that it's home and there are no visible issues. No chunks of metal in the oil either. When i would rev it up, the power FC would show knock, It ran for maybe 30 seconds all together once I noticed the noise.

Any insight? I plan on taking the intake off tomorrow and looking inside a little better.

You have rod knock. Where a bearing is spun and starts beating on the crank journal... slowly wallowing things out till you have a more serious failure.

You want to pull that thing and rebuild before you experience what I did. Fun pictures below.

could be coil goin out or rocker arm...pull valve cover and check top end...rotate engine by hand...etc...

I rotated it by hand and everything thing top end is looking great, and sounds of good compression. Guess i'll just tear it completely down
