I've owned two, an 89 and a 97. The 89 broke down just once in the 3 years I owned it, and that was a sensor issue. It already had 100k+ miles on it when I bought it. I drove my 97 for 9 years without anything major. I put 100k miles on it myself before I changed the timing chain cover gasket. To date, the most reliable car I've owned. Mine also stayed stock.
I'm in the same situation. I want a reliable driver with a straight body. And I'm having to do an 8 hr round trip to get one this weekend.
Probably looking at $5-8k for one, while kbb value one these things is maybe $3-4k tops.

Finding a stock one in great shape is harder than I expected. Finding a stock 5 spd is like seeing a freaking unicorn at this point.

Welcome to the community! Don't mind the trolls here.

A 240SX in good shape is very tough to find, best of luck there. They are very reliable cars in general and have plenty of parts or swaps you can do to spice them up however you see fit when you're ready. You're right to expect to pay $5-8k for a decent shape, unabused (no mods that is) running 240.

When you do check out a car you're considering to purchase make sure you look over the frame - get it on a lift if you can. Like most cars a buyer should do this, but early 240s especially had some accelerated frame rust on the driver side rail below the firewall. So just check for that. You may also wish to stick to 240s with the KA24DE (91+) motor, you don't want the single cam KA24E (89-90)

As for the 200SX, since you're a Mustang guy, I don't suspect you'll enjoy that FWD as a DD (US Version that is). IMHO, of course, given your existing ride.

Shake off the trolls here and there is a lot of good info buried between the quips and asshattery.

Again, best of luck and welcome aboard!

Do you just like older cars that aren't going to be classics? I mean, with 12k, the 240sx is REALLY low-balling yourself. That said, they're reliable as a whole. You'll get more creature comforts in the later models (95+). If you don't need that stuff (and I can't imagine why you wouldn't with a DD), the S13's are the way to go. But, for that kinda money, you can also get a 350Z/G35 coupe. Both are a LOT heavier, but both are a lot more powerful stock v stock. SR swap/KA-T money is roughly the same as turbo money for the VQ's (Z/G) and LS swap money is about the same for as the motor/tranny/swap kits are readily available for either. I'm only bringing up the newer RWD Nissans because you get SO much more for your money. I mean, I LOVE the 240, but I don't know if I'll ever buy another one based on value per dollar. Plus, the hoonigan lifestyle is ruining them at a rapid rate.

I had the same train of thought when I decided to look for another 240. But I just don't like the 350z and g35. Not the biggest fan of the 370z either. Datsun/Nissan cars were a part of my childhood. My dad owned a 240z, then two frontiers. My grandfather drove a 280zx. And they both loved them. For me, it was the 97 s14. It was the car that I fell for. The one that made me enjoy driving. And that is why I'm willing to pay more than I logically should for one that isn't turned into a stance nation shitbox.

I fell in love with the S13 curves (or lack of them lol) and never looked back. I've owned both 350Z and G35 and as much fun the 350Z was I absolutely love my S13. I get so much more satisfaction in driving it daily that I have never with any other car. But, like you've already noticed it is difficult to find a clean example as most are being trashed by the "Hoonigan" and "drift missile" crowd mentioned above. If you find one in good shape thats not overly overpriced, I wouldn't wait too long to make an offer! It took me about a year to find mine. From experience, I would look elsewhere than on CL and forums as drift tax will drive the costs up. GL and welcome to the community.

I battle with this all the time, I have come to realize the 240sx will never be a classic, although I never thought it would be. There's only a handful of people that understand me dumping money into an old Nissan, and the other ones give me crap about it. Yes, it's a terrible investment but hey just from the short time I've been on this forum I know I'm not alone. I've always wanted an S14 and never got one due to one thing or another.

The 350Z and G35 have never done anything for me either.

Good luck to the OP on your search, be ready to spend some money!

Why would the S13 never be a classic? I think its on the right path.

I got all kinds of shit from my parents when I bought this one. And I'm damned near 40 and live 200 miles away from them.
Anyway, I grabbed this for $6800. For the most part, it's clean and stock, but it does have a few issues. They're out there, just keep searching.

Believe me, I'd rather have a stick, but stock was slim pickings in my budget. I found one local, but it looked too shady. There were others, but they needed more bodywork than I wanted to deal with.

before anyone else says anything stupid... the S13 and S14 were known as the "200sx" in Europe. So if you wish to continue flaming, please know what youre talking about instead of just making yourselves look even dumber!
