So going to be under going a a head rebuild buying the car second hand. It is said to have bent valves i have a head gasket kit and timing chain and tensioner kit on the way. Other then that i want to know how to properly make sure its at tdc on compression stroke since I'm sure its out of time now. And don't say go look on google i have everything is very vague or links are broken i have fsm on the way for and it is in a 1992 240sx coupe. Any small help would be greatly helpful i know this has probably been asked millions of times. I just want my own thread to come back and check stuff thank you in advance. -Alex

The TDC mark on your pulley is the second mark from the left. So using a 27mm if I remember correctly, rotate the pulley/crankshaft until you are at that marking. Then check the lobes on your cam. If the lobes for cylinder 1 are facing away from eachother like <> rather than facing eachother >< then you are at TDC on your compression stroke. If cylinder 1 cam lobes are not pointing away from eachother then rotate the pulley 360 degrees and that will be compression stroke.
Also, since I'm assuming you're taking the head off to check the valves you can just install the cams like this^
Just make sure that your intake cams marking is at about 10 o' clock and that your exhaust's is at 12 o' clock and then line up the colored links on your new chain. Yellow goes to the marking on your crank sprocket and the dark grey ones go on your cam gear marks.

Thank you for the response okay so have lobes ^^ up when removing and checking head. Go to do a head gasket. And alright i was so confused every forum i looked at said tdc cyl #1 conpression stroke. I was like how do i know if its on compression stroke if i cant turn it over and have to remove the head. But okay 2nd notch from the left side. Think i should have block check i am going to take a flat blade and check for warpage and head will be sent to machine shop. Just wanted advice to make sure.
