Hi Guys.

I got a used turob that the previous owner sold me as a "Disco Potato" Gt2860RS but the CHRA does not have any Nameplate. It actually looks as if it came off. The compressor housing and Turbine housings are real garrett for sure. There is also a Number ( serial number? ) on the side of the CHRA . There are some letters in the casting as well. With the flood of non- Genuine alternatives I'd like to know what I have.

I have pictures below of the CHRA as well as the compressor wheel, I took off the Compressor cover. There is no abnormal play in the shaft either side to side or in and out. The previous owner claims it was used for 3 months then left in storage for a couple of years. The compressor wheel leading edges does seem a bit rough.

Can i use this turbo like this. Was thinking to hold off on maybe compressor wheel change etc. should I do that? I got it just to keep my car running for the mean while.

Some oil was in the compressor cover I cant tell if this would have some from a leaking shaft seal or from intake. Because the Compressor wheel is pretty clean. I welcome your thoughts on this turbo and it's condition Please.

The place where the tag may have been. I feel a little point on the bottom RHS of that sode of the CHRA probably where the rivet was attached?

Gunk in the compressor housing see the black on the inner circumference .. Could this have meant an oil leak from the fron seal ring ?

Thoughts, opinions will be greatly appreciated from those who may have had some similar type experience. I've searched the web and couldn't find much details.

I'm assuming you took it apart? You should know if its usable or not? Garrett is a brand\company!

I took off the compressor housing only. It spins fine and there is no abnormal play. It is a ball bearing for sure. I'm no turbo expert. I'm just apprehensive since I couldn't positively identify if the CHRA is genuine Garrett( which is what i was told) and I only noticed the true state of the compressor wheel when I took off the housing.

The price was fair just wondering if it's worth the risk to go ahead and use it like that.

You can easily identify a ball bearing chra usually by the oil feed port. Take a picture straight down into the port.

Again to use the turbo is your decision, clean it up use or trash it or resell.
