I just picked up some sweet JDM S14 light up kick plates but don't know which wires to tap into. I've checked the 3 wires coming from the door sensor and none of those will work.
I basically need 12v when the door is open and 0v when it is off. I purchased an inverter online and im not using OEM stuff because it never came with it.
Im scanning the FSM but maybe im not looking hard enough.
Thank you all.

I hate wiring so I am not sure where these wires run, but if you could somehow tap into the 'roof' light, that would be the best option in my opinion.

go buy a multimeter and some probes. it really shouldn't be that difficult, but I wouldn't try to use the door switch to power a light. you may be able to use the signal from the door switch to trigger a relay that powers the door sill lights though.

Tapping into the dome light is the best method in my opinion. I usually splice into the dome light wires routed up the passenger A-pillar. This way the courtesy lights on both doors will illuminate of either door is opened.
Green and Yellow wires power my courtesy lights.

They are originally wired on the door switch for room lighting (dome light door mode). If you need help LMK. Do you hang out at starbucks san bruno?

I'm in Fremont, my car is hard to miss, I run bumperless with a oil cooler and a light bar hanging off my bash bar.

When I finalize my wiring I will definitely go this route, thank you.

I have a 12v constant running to both drivers and the ground tied together going to the passenger door switch.
When the door is open the wire grounds out, when the door is closed that wire turns to 12v which is why I was confused AF.

Wiring is a love/hate thing for me. It's fun because im alone when I do it but it is pretty time consuming.

Its should be tap on the color R/W wire driver side door switch for 12V.

I don't know much about how diode works. When you look at the FSM an SE and with OE theft alarm system have diode before the door switch. The Base model don't. Try wiring them before or after the diode and see if they work.
BTW did you test them first before you install them? Its the best way to start before wiring them onto the car lol.

I can see how this would be confusing. You must have a basic understanding of electrical lighting circuits to comprehend what happens on this dome light circuit. You must also know the difference between voltage and current.
The door switches simply ground the dome light circuit. They do not provide power to anything. Two wires on the door switch: Black wire is connected to ground. R/W wire is connected to the dome light. It is the negative side of the light circuit. When you open the door, the door switch connects the Black wire to the R/W wire. The R/W wire becomes grounded.
So why do you see 12v on the R/W wire when the door is closed? Because the circuit is open. Voltage will exist on an open circuit but current cannot flow.
When you open the door, the door switch completes the negative side of the circuit. Current can finally flow through the light bulb and the voltage will be "used up" or "converted" to light (and heat). The light bulb will use all the available voltage and there will be none left on the negative side of the circuit.
When you close the door, the door switch opens the negative side of the circuit. Current can no longer flow through the light bulb. The voltage is not "used up" in the light bulb and hence it will exist on the negative side of the circuit.
Long story short; you can't use the door switches to power anything, only to ground things.
If you want both door lights to simultaneously illuminate when either door is opened, you must tap into the dome light wiring like I did.
If you want the door lights to illuminate separately, you can use each door switch to ground that particular door light.
