Damn how much boost did your motor see? Is the turbo still alive?

MrKaisan
09-15-2004, 10:56 AM
i think it was about 14 psi that did it.

and the turbo did survive the incident. it happended at the track so she didnt run to long like that.

14 psi on what???

MrKaisan
09-15-2004, 11:36 AM
um lets see if i remember correctly,

t3/t4 .50 / .63

yes i think thats the specs. honestly i cant remember exactly

that looks lovely man, now you got some cool paper weights. haha. any pics of your block? interested in how your cylinder walls look.

Well, 14psi on a KA+T3/t4 will do that on stock internals. ;)

Hehehehe..been there, done that:

Detonation...doesn't take much for those stock pistons to break!

You've got it worse than me, though...

Get it back together and get boosting again.

what kind of fuel setup do you have?

orion::S14
09-15-2004, 07:36 PM
Yeah, I'm curious as well.

What's the whole turbo setup..? JWT or S-AFC? I'd guess just some 370cc injectors, or maybe an FMU?

can i answer for you kaisan??

fmu w/ stock injectors

Yeah...with no timing control, that would have happened (eventually) at 8-9psi...even with proper fuel tuning.

How much boost was it running, and what was it going to be after the MBC was installed?

Was the base timing retarded at all, or was is stock?

MrKaisan
09-15-2004, 10:46 PM
yes, base timing was adjusted and i was shooting for 10psi (which i had run before with no problems)

matt answed my setup for fuel management.
10-1 fmu w/ stock injectors

ill tell you though, when all that boost came on, she fired off like a rocket!

i am going to replace the internals with forged pistons(JE), chromoly rings, forged rods(not sure who), and beefed up bearings.

any one know if anyone has ever stroked a ka before?maybe say a ka26det?

i actually appentice at a local machine shop and could do all of the work. i just dont know where to go for the custom pistons, rings, and rods. any suggestions?

Ooh.. I was thinking this was on a sr, and was questioning what went wrong, but 14psi on a ka was asking for it

The KA is stroked stock.

The KA is stroked stock.

really, i didnt know that.

well, maybe ill just bore it and go from there

No, if you want high hp out of the ka, deal with the crank first. Its starts to wobble like a dilldo at 350+hp.

10-1 fmu w/ stock injectors..

Dude...FMU are a good low boost solution (5-6psi), but get dangerous at fuel pressure levels over 100psi.

You're pushing +140psi under boost!!!

That's not safe..many cars have burnt to the ground due to fuel hoses blowing at pressure levels that high.

Be careful...maybe even rethink your fuel setup.

^^ I agree with Brian

This will be a good time where you can upgrade your fuel setup.
Either 370cc + safc or 370cc +JWT ECU is way better/safer setup than the one you have right now.

ok, but what if i want to go to say 450-500 what kind of fuel mangement should i be looking at? i figure stand alone is the only way at that point but, is there an alternative?

i will check the balance on the crank and see what i can do to improve it. more than likely though, i think ill have to go mith something custom. who should i turn to for this?

Whoa...I missed this when I posted my last reply.

Who gave you this bad info?

Have you missed all the +350rwhp KA running around with stock cranks?

Have a look at KA-T.org for a sample...and add Mike Li (sp?) to that list (he's at 540rwhp with no crank issues). And Adam Hutchinson (KA24E-T)...

We know that a KA can't do high revs due to the balance of the crank and the long stroke...but that's the only issue I've ever heard of.

Have anything to back that up?

Hehehe...you need something with timing control!

JWT is decent, but won;t make the highest power.

Standalone is great, but the tuning required scare many people off...and some people (like me) want to just drive a car, not spend all day tuning it.

I'll gladly sacrifice a little power for safety and ease of plug-and-play.

Only other option is S-AFC + MSD BTM + Z32 MAF + FPR + blah, blah, blah...a bunch of piggy back shit that won't work well together.

So for 450-500rwhp, it's JWT or standalone. Or some other ECU tune, if anyone else is doing it for the KAs at the point you'll be reaching that level.
