I have a s13 sr20det in a 260z, have been combating timing issues for a long time, and haven't been able to fix it at all. I know timing an sr20det has been beaten to death on forums, but I cant seem to find an answer to my perticular problem

Problem:
Vehicle timing is 1 inch to the right of 20 btdc, and can not be set to 15btdc(can adjust cas to it, but car falls on its face)

Symptoms
Current timing(1inch right of 20btdc): idles fine, loss of midrange power(4-5000rpm), computer has to fight timing to prevent knocking, pulls to redline
If timing set at 15btdc: vehicle sounds like a v8, misfires on acceleration with rpms unable to pass 3500, loss of power, rough idle.

Mods
-s13 sr20det w/ t25 stock ecu
-freddy intake, megan racing exhaust manifold, straight 3" exhaust, front mount, stock injectors, stock maf, new coils & plugs

Measurement
-Vehicle enters timing mode fine(ground neutral switch and all)
-Timing light used on loop in back of motor, or off #1 wire directly(no -difference)
-The timing light verified good
-Timing measures at about 1 inch to the right of 20btdc(so its way off)

-restabbed cas causes vehicle to no longer idle
-Confirmed crank pulley tdc matches cylinder tdc
-no signs of chain slack and tensioner appears fine
-no check engine light

I have read about a billion timing forums, and just cant seem to find an answer. the crank lines up at tdc, the cams are at 10 and 12 with correct links between, the cas looks good and is almost in the middle of the bolt adjusters, am I doing something wrong? Or anyone have any ideas that may help??

When crank pulley tdc matches cylinder tdc...what do your #1 cam lobes look like? The should look like this < >

Cylinder #1 cam lobes at tdc are < and >. They're not perfectly perpendicular, maybe a slight incline to both, but I cant see how they could be perfectly perpendicular and maintain the correct number of links between them. Sorry for the bad photos

The car acts like the cam timing is off, like the valves are open at 15btdc, but they look spot on(photo in post 1)???? Could I be wrong?

Remove the cas rotate the engine by hand over to 10°btdc, remove the tensioner, install tensioner rotate crank pulley backwards watch tensioner release, rotate engine over to tdc, if the tensioner still has not fully extended keep rotating another 4stroke cycle then proceed to set engine to tdc, install cas.

To set engine into timing mode disconnect the tps rev 3xto3krpm, or use consult, any other way I can't help you with.

with the lobes facing out, piston 1 tdc (second mark from left on pulley) you install the cas so that it lines up the 2 dots and then LOOK at the cas to make sure its mostly center right there, with the 2 correct dots lined up (the ones that line up as it falls into place, the second pair). If the cas is mostly center, you put it back together and it should start up normally. Thats your first clue its right.

Then, you get the correct timing light. some do not work. the correct timing light will read correctly right off the bat: with the 2 dots on the CAS lined up, when you first put the timing light on the pulley, it WILL read around 15* btdc with the CAS nearly centered. If it doesn't, you reverse the pickup (flip the wire clip around) and if it STILL doesnt you swap to a different light.

I'm 99% your CAS is not installed correctly. Check out this guide: http://www.frsport.com/How-To-Set-Crank-Angle-Sensor--CAS--Timing-on-the-SR20DET-Engine_t_25.html

The dot closest to the notch is supposed to be lined up at TDC. I would start there.
