ive got an sr20 in an s13 chassis and I keep blowing up gearboxes so was going to swap in an rb25det box out of an r33, however they are way more expensive over here compared to z32 gearboxes. I already have a sr-rb gearbox adapter plate. ive never seen a z32 box so was wondering how different the mounting bolt holes on the rb and vg30? on the engine side of the bellhousing.and if I can get away with using my rb conversion plate.
google suggests that if I fit a r33 transmission the shifter will be at the front of the hole in the tunnel. fitting a 300zx transmission will move the shifter backwards by an unknown amount. can anyone clarify how further back they sit?

the kits arent cheap this is for a full kit minus clutch and pp/flywheel which would be sr stuff

this is just for adapter cheaper alternative still have to source everything else.

i would say the shifter moves back a few inches rather then the rb25 trans which is on point but it sits a little lower then the ka trans shifter i have a spacer in between the trans and shifter raises it a inch or two

The Z32 box has an external linkage that changes gears where the R box is internal. This moves the shifter back a considerable amount. The swap packages generally supply a shorter shifter plate and a new shifter for the Z box install. This still pushes the shifter back to back side of the hole far enough that the hole needs clearancing(Mazworx kit). One of the kits shortens the linkage between the trans and the shifter and the shifter plate so no modifications to the shifter hole are needed.
You'll need to use a VG to SR adapter for the transmission. The two hell housings are completely different.

cheers for the quick replies,
so the bellhousing are mega different. that's a bummer.
I planned to cut and shut the standard shifter linkage. how much further back would you say it was? as a few inches could be 2 or 10, if you get what I mean.
the thing that im not keen about the r box is that it moves the shifter real close to the dash. I sit quite far back in the car so having the shifter further back would be a bit of a bonus.it does seem more messing around compared to the r box, does the shift still feel good compared to the R box?

im guessing the square plate to the top left of the mazworks kit is to cover the original shifter hole. so that's the amount it moves the shifter with the stock linkage.

Yes, approx 2.5-3" back and 1-1.5" off center(closer to the driver). I can't measure for you right now because I'm out of town.
