First off, I'd like to apologize if this is the wrong place for this, it's my first time posting here, anyway, on to the issue.

I have an s14 sr20det notchtop, and there's a knocking/rattling noise around 2.5-3k rpm.. it is not present at idle, or while under boost.
I had been having knock issues under wot. So I replaced my spark plugs with bkr6e on accident, and that's when this all started. My knock readings went off the charts and I started hearing a knocking. Put bkr7e's in it, and my knock readings disappeared, but the sound stayed.
My mods (if they matter) include: splitfire coils, 770cc injectors, gt2871r turbo 12psi, apexi power fc, fmic,

Timing chain guides broken might be the chain rattling around

may be your vtc gear, disconnect oil control valve and see if it still does it, if it does not rattle with valve disconnected its your gear.

I think it may have been a rod, trying to lump it home, and it got exponentially worse, and now does it all the time. Towed it home, and now it waits till I can rebuild the bottom end  :fawk2: :-/

Drain the oil into a zip lock Baggie and throw s small magnet on it. You can also look at the oil in the light to spot metal flake. I'd pull the pan and wiggle the rods, as most likely it's a rod bearing.

Still haven't had time to actually work on the car, but I've done some research and found my issue may be a bad vvt sprocket, anyone have any input on this? It's the better of the 2 scenarios, I think :x:

he already answered this

Ill repeat the correct response: is to disconnect oil valve and move to verify by significant correlation

s14 sr are notorious for vtc gear making noise mine only does it on start up but what kingtalon said is how you make sure its the vtc. Other thing is your lifters might have air in them there is bunch of write ups on how to bleed them id start there since its the cheapest.

After removing the valve cover and doing some inspection, the chain/guides appear to be good, and after disabling the vtc sensor/solenoid, the noise persisted. I checked my filter and there is no metalic residue. And after disconnecting plugs, the noise didn't go away, almost completely ruling out rod knock. There IS some scoring on the cam lobes, and I cleaned out the intake oil squirter for the cam and there was some gunk in it, going to clean the exhaust side, and change my oil, and see if the noise goes away :x:

This video link is the knocking noise im hearing within my engine. It sounds top end like it might be the lifters, but im not too positive. Anyone ever have any issues like this? I just purchased this engine and dropped in with new oil, filter, spark plugs, harness, clutch etc. I did not pull the engine apart at all. If anyone has anymore information to help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

if you already see gunk in the oil holes for the camshafts, that is a sign that filth has entered the engine and that the orifices are clogged up and it probably wont live much longer. One of the main keys to keeping an engine happy is to keep is clean inside, surgery, doctor clean.

that does not sound like a lifter. A couple things come to mind.
1. it sounds kind of like a spark. check the ground for the coil packs at the back of the head. I've heard it arc to the head cause that sound.
2. it could be exhaust gasket. pretty sure it isn't, but easy to check, wait till the engine is ICE COLD and have someone start it while you cup your hands all around the ICE COLD manifold/exhaust parts check for leaks while its cold.
3. otherwise, it could be an arc off a coilpack, although that should cause the engine to misfire. still, worth alook, remove each coilpack, inspect the rubber boot for damage. Look down each plug hole for obvious signs of arcing sparks. try unplugging each coil one at a time to see if one stop the noise.

I think what you mean is: if you pull the coil pack off a cylinder and NOTHING changes, you found where your misfire is coming from. If it were working correctly, it would get worse if you pulled a coil off.

he has a noise not a misfire

unplug coilpack = no spark = no arc = no noise

assuming noise is a spark jumping a gap. Which I said already, very unlikely to find in the valve cover recess where the coils are, but I know its possible because I've seen it jump when there was some kind of grounding grease available in the valvecover's "cylinder"

It sounds like a worn cam lobe to me along with bearing failure. It could just be the worn cam slapping the rocker etc. But I also heard the knock prior to full startup. So multiple issue exits. If the coil packs have cracks or have exploded yeah, you can bet they are arcing.
Examine the coil packs! I hear what you hear there, but I'm not sure it's just arcing.

That startup though, I'd definitely be taking that engine apart.
