I have recently installed oil pressure gauges after purchasing my First s13 with a SR swap done already.

The temps have been rising in California and so have my oil temps.

Background on the motor and problem occurring.
Thermostat is stuck open. Oil temps get to around 170 after 15-20 minutes of freeway driving. Oil pressure at that temp at 3200-3500 rpm is 20 psi.

When the oil is cold >100 my idle pressure is 40-60.

I use 10w-40 and just recently changed the oil and did the filter sand which install for the sensors.

Once I get off the freeway to get to work and my car is at 170 degrees oil temp and I put it in neutral the pressure will drop to 2 and rise up to 12 when I cost to a stop off the exit. I have seen my cars oil red light go off when it hits 2 which isn't enough to get oil to the head and you can tell when it drops real quick from the smell. The oil temps cools off to about 130-140 when it sits for about 5 minutes.

I plan on getting a s14 strainer this weekend from FRSsport local pick up but I need to figure out something to not kill cams until then. Would possibly adding a half quart to my system bring up the pressure at hot temps on idle?

I need to get my temps up for 3 more days until I can bust a mission to FRS.

Opinions on how to save my head until then!

that pressure is too low. are you sure the gauge is right? Is it a mechanical gauge? the fact the light came on kind of confirms it.

At 2000rpm with fully warmed up oil, in an engine with 150,000 miles or more, I will usually expect 40-45psi of oil pressure. You need at least 10psi per 1000rpm as a rule of thumb.

The entire engine is at risk, not just the head. If you want to save the engine, you could try replacing the oil pump, but it might be too late. Also inspect the pickup (first) by pulling off the pan, redtops are notorious for dropping pickups.
