Hey folks. I recently picked up a bone stock 97 s14, and the window trim appears to have expanded over time, causing this gap to appear on both sides of the car. Inside the gap you can see the crumbly remnants of old silicon or rubber? Not exactly sure as i'm new to the s chassis. (been a Z owner my whole life... never dealth with windows like these)

A body shop recommended that I don't mess with it because i might create more problems, and said that water getting in here won't cause rust, which i find questionable. I wanted to pose the question here since y'all are very familiar with these cars. Is this a common problem with the aging s14 population? What course of action is recommended here? I know the quarter glass and rubber come as one piece and hard to get these days. I DO see some drips of water come through after washing the car. Rust is definitely a concern in my mind.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would suggest going to another shop to see if they would help.

When I carried mine to a shop, they refused to work on 'these types of cars'. But be careful though, you do get what you pay for.

I would suggest taking it to a glass shop. They should be able to replace or possibly even fix, the old trim.
