View Full Version : Red wire to Alternator Grounding OUT?!?!

So i have been chasing a battery drain, and it lead me to the small White wire with the red stripe on the plug that goes into the alternator. Wiring Diagrams indicate this goes to the bulb check relay (same as charge lamp indicator?) in the wiring diagram. Which I imagine is for the light in the dash ?
Is this supposed to be grounding out with the car off?

I need to know before i start stripping the harness.

On my 2jz, with the ignition switch on and the motor off that pin goes to ground and turns on the light on the dash.
I wired it up a while ago but I think it was that one of the pins on the alternator gets 12v+ constant ("s" source), another gets 12v+ with the ign switch ("ig" ignition) and the 3rd goes to ground ("l" dash light) when the other pins are "on" but the alt/motor is not running. That wire should also then float or get a couple of volts when the motor is running to turn off the light. I'm not sure if your alternator is the same or not but it would help if you could post the wiring diagram.

Ran man here is the link, page 3 is the diagram I am referring to. http://www.240edge.com/manuals/89-90_240sx/wiring_2.pdf
This should all be chassis wiring so let me know what you think.
Thank you

Your wiring looks to be a bit different than mine. My output from the alternator goes directly into behind the dash light for the batt circuit.
Your alternator has 2 pins "B" and "S" (the white wires) which should get 12v+ when the ignition switch is in the accessory on position but not when the car is cranking. They are fed from the Accessory Relay #2 and should not have power when the ignition switch is turned off. It has a ground "E" likely just though the housing and a white/red light wire marked "L". From there the "L" wire ties off to an ABS module, the instrument cluster, and a bulb check relay. Ensure that you have good continuity across the wire from the alt (pin "L") to the instrument cluster (pin #12) it's white/red.
If your problem of a power drain is at the alternator it is more likely related to the "B" and the "S" wires not turning off with the ignition switch for whatever reason than the signal cable but it is nice to have it connected and working as well, you could sort of say that alt doesn't car if the "L" wire is connected. It senses voltage and knows when to turn on from the other "white" wires.

To be clear the wiring diagram indicates pin15 (not 12)for the abs unit, that means I need to find the abs control unit and probe the #15 pin, and check continuity to "L" on the alternator ?
Do all 240s come wit abs modules even if they don't have abs?
Still trying to find where the issue is, My backup light switch is not hooked up due to the z33 trans, and i saw that it is also grounding out. I have continuity(4mega ohm) to ground from the green wire w/blue stripe at the back up sensor harness clip.
also when probing the fuses in the dash driver side, the rev. light fuse on the bottom right also has continuity to ground, with the key off, is that normal?

sigh, i really struggle with wiring. I am not sure where to go from here..
the reason i believe i have a voltage drain is when i use a noid light on the negative terminal of the battery and the ground wire, it flashes slowly, and then when i remove the alt 75a fuse. it stops flashing, as if something in the alternator was shorting out. I pulled the alternator and ran a diode test and it checked out. thats when i discovered the white wire with red stripe is grounding out with the car off.
