View Full Version : Run Its The Cops!!!

The setup: OK, I cruise out to In & Out in Fullerton, CA for little "import" meet-up. I run into a few guys, there ended up being about 6-7 240's...very nice...However, in the parking lot there are also WRX's, Evo's, and yes, Honda's of every variety. Oh yea, I can't forget about the FC...Nice guy...Clean ride...So what are we doing? Standing around, shooting the breeze, talking about what else....our cars...We stare, laugh, cry at the cars that pass by...some are clean some are funk. Basically we are doing nothing.
The problem: So what happens? A cop shows up...funny thing to because I say "Hey look the PO", and the guy next to me says "ah, he ain't doin nothing"....BAM all of sudden sirens, a towtruck, and a cop on a loudspeaker...Basically chases everyone out of the parking lot, and onto the streets...I felt pretty lucky, I got away... :keke:
The *****: First, I have a real problem with this sort of police action. First of all, we were all "standing in a parking lot"...I have to say, besides a few folks bumpin their stereo's, it was pretty tame night. So we were basically enjoying our hobby...What pisses me off, is that if we were driving a bunch of camaro's, mustangs and chevelle's....THE COPS WOULD HAVE LEFT US ALONE. That really burns me...its like, if they see "imports" they ASSUME trouble is brewing.
Second, whats with the louspeaker and siren? Yea, here is an intelligent idea, lets scare the hell outta a bunch of people, and have them running to their cars, and rushing to leave a parking lot...Sounds safe to you? Sounds like bull**** to me.
Seriously, what the hell is the problem? Have few bad seeds ruined the fun and enjoyment for everyone else? Are we "that bad"???

hahah i was gonna go tonight, but i didn't.
awesome.
solution: if you have an illegal car, dont go to stupid gatherings like that.
if you have a legal car. what is there to worry about? let them siren you all they want. my car is legal. i would have stayed.

Yea, I'd definately be down for some canyon runs, we should call a small meet in So Cal, I'm moving to riverside next tuesday but I'll be back in Garden Grove every weekend. The guy with the silver moss 240sx with the bronze fno1's is going to be living in Riverside too. I'm thinking you would be in Riverside too (UCR)? We should be able to get a nice group of cars, I can think of atleast 2-3 cars besides myself who would be interested.

but such is life. if you want to play with your car, you gotta play with the law.
you know... living in america, you shouldn't have to deal with this. It's farkin unconstitutional.
1st amendment..
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
and 4th
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
I don't believe there is probable cause in a car that is not even running with no one driving....

Maybe a call to the local PD letting them know what's up would keep shit like that from happening.
If you make arrangements with the owner of whatever parking lot or establishment you're gathering at, and let the local PD know you'll be having a gathering there and that it's been arranged with the location owner's consent. You can bet your bottom dollar that you'll be WAY less likely to be harassed by cops, and if they DO show up, you can pull their pump card by telling them that their dept. should've known about this. If you're doing nothing illegal they have no cause to bother you, and since you're on private property at the owner's consent, they can't shoo you away. If an incident DOES occur the owner of the property can complain to city hall and the police dept for harassment.
It's all about knowing the system and what IS and ISN'T a good idea.
That said, daytime meets are less likely to be messed with, as nighttime meets ARE suspicious, whether you think they are or not.

Brian, your car ain't legal! its so low it makes my car look like its still stock height =p
as for the PO PO stuff. some people have some serious, serious abuse of power issues. But on the other hand, it is preventative measures i guess cause half the time something bad/(fun for us) goes on at these large import meets as penis measure contests start popping up and the peeps start doing other things than chew the fat.
If they really are out of line, and they're just intimidating cause they're asses, i think there is a serious problem. I personally see it as our responsibility as citizens to keep the authorities in check since hell, no one else does. File complaints if you feel you're mistreated, get the officer's badge number and put them on the spot. Illegal actions goes both ways.
sykikchimp: actually, i know of more than one state where it is illegal to be out in masses at night. i forgot which state, but one of them classifies a group of more than 4-5 pedestrians as a "gang" and reserve the right to break it up. constitutional? nope, sane? nope. But policy makers aren't the smartest bunch, they're just smarter than the majority of people who think the law/policy is always right.

look at it from the cops perspective...
it's late at night. there's a good number of kids with cars that look modified. that's two huge flags right there. anytime there is a bunch of kids about there's going to be mischief. imports tend to be a younger crowd then domestic owners. its just a breeding ground for fighting, vandalism, street racing... he'd be negligent to not at least check out what's going on. i'm not saying you guys are that group; but you have to admit that most of the people who 'trick out' their cars are testosterone driven attention whores... trying to be 'tough' and whatnot. don't blame the cops, blame the 90% of import 'tunerz' who ruin it for everyone else.
thats the reason i stopped going to those "meets" 2 years ago... why go somewhere to set yourself up. the police are simply doing their job and most of the cars that go there are setting up races later on in the night.

this is why cars shouldnt be mainstreamed as entertaining or a hobby, it brings in
[email protected]%^... I dont see any problems with car meets or groups of people, but its the
[email protected])%* that ruin it.. becuase big car gatherings probably have had bad situations with law enforcement in previous times that pretty much sets up a "standard" that something can happen at any meet.

Yeah, well one morning it was me in blue s13, my girlfriends in her red prelude, and another one our friends in a blue protege' driving to an autocross. were were NOT speeding but since the 3 of us were driving in a line he "assumed" we were up to no good (at 9am on a SUNDAY). he pulls us over and gives us all a speeding tickets for the same exact speed. i knew it was BS so i went to my cousin who is in the sheriffs department in that area and he talked to the officer and you know what he told him,
hehe this is golden,

You all have made some great points. I truely believe that some bad seeds/immature idiots have ruined our ability to hangout. What's funny about the meet to me was how different each crowd seems to be. Honda/Acura owners were making the most noise with their muffler. Some truck was blasting music rediculously loud. 240s seems pretty laid back. Some people drag as they leave for no reason, I bet you that's what got the cops attention. Team 505 anyone? Whatsup with the smoke, lights, and shit??

mrmem hit it on the head. The legal precedence to move you guys out is loitering. Look at it this way: you are in the parking lot of a business (this is private property, "right to assemble" means nothing), taking up parking places, likely making some noise with stereos and whatnot. You blame the police when the complaint likely came from the business. If you get consent from some business owner before using their lot beforehand, then there is no need to leave. The police likely won't show up, and if they do they aren't going to do anything about it. Shit, what's with the running anyway if you weren't doing anything wrong? Why not speak to the cop? Find out what the problem is, he may even give you some advice on where to meet up. Cops are people too :P
On the other hand, I do like how you went about telling your story. Glad you aren't one of those F*CK THE POLICE assholes :-)

Who's to say the property owners allowed such meetings on their property?
Perhaps the manager of that In-N-Out called the police to break up the gathering?
You can assemble peacefully all you want, but you also have to respect private property.
As for legal arguments, well, by all means get a good lawyer.

Arright. . . somebody got rid of the rant smiley. I liked the rant smiley. Now I need to rant without a smiley. Thanks, jerks.
Hilarious, the original poster just finishes talking about how some immature people tend to ruin otherwise great gatherings. . . I try to shed some light on what actually might have happened (police usually respond to complaints-- they don't wander around looking to get in everybody's way). . . Immediately afterward we get not one, but TWO ignorant posts. Your attitude that the police are an enemy is only going to cause you and people near you trouble.
Consider the In n Out: how much business are they going to lose because a group of kids is parking in their lot blasting music and making noise? I am not comfortable parking my own car near a group of teenagers hanging out at night. Not that I don't trust teenagers, but kids tend to be careless and they oftentimes don't have respect for other people's properties. OK, so maybe I don't trust teenagers, but I don't trust them for good reason. I was one of them not long ago at all.
A police officer is a civil servant, they are here for us, not against us. Grow up, guys. Your attitude may have been a hit in high school, but it only makes you look bad in the real world.

original poster here...I have to admit the line for the drive thru was huge...Packed all night...Plenty were patronizing the establishment...How could you not? Its In & Out...But I do acknowledge your point...fully.

this has to be one of the more ignorant comments i've read in a while.
point being? if you were ANY group of individuals with noticeable cars in a parking lot at night, you'de get noticed. shit, even if you DIDNT have a car, a bunch of people in a parking lot, would get noticed. the loud speakers, exhausts, motors, and flashy cars will of course, attract attention -- both good and bad.
its not the few seeds that fucked it up for "everyone," its the type of meeting you guys decided to have, that caused the probem.
You want to hang out and talk cars, go inside the restaraunt and eat.. meet with your friends, talk cars. i'm not against what you guys did, but use some common sense.
IF I WAS in that situation, and cops came blazing sirens.. I would have locked my car and gone inside to get a bite to eat. They cant ticket my car for me not being there, and they cant impound it. Difference here is that you were with a bunch of kids, who think like kids, and run anytime they see "5.0 po po" blah blah. Shit, i'm 26 and I have enough sense (and balls) not to run anytime i see a cop. Folks who run, run because they're either scared or hiding something.

Sorry, but until the event is called a car show and treated as such, to business and police it will be treated as a large gathering.
And unfortunately large gatherings with no security = trouble. No matter how much you keep the peace, all it takes is for two assholes to ruin everyone's night. And in America, that happens ALL THE TIME.
So, until someone changes society and make everyone more humble and more respectable towards each other, this game of cop hating will continue.

I have noticed that certain areas are actually looking at meets and gatherings as a profitable measure. out ini riverside during the summer we had a meet near UCR, we notified the owner and he even gave us a 50% discount on drinks that day. it wasnt just 240s, you had honda/acura, domestics, toyotas... cops came by and everyone waved. peace officers made there presence known and me personally if i see someone being an assclown and law enforcement is nearby, i wont hesitate to give your liscense plate and which car and have you harassed by them. like at the shine street meet in the beginning of the year. it was laid back until that guy in the decal'd S14 started revving his engine and doing burnouts. i work with law enforcement so if kids are out at nite you will be noticed if you have someone go up and speak to the officer more than likely they will comply. i have actually had officers that liked the cars and got out and were checking out the imports and comended the owners for using there time in something like a car then smoking weed or some random sh*t

and to that comment I say this. I live in a small area and if you've been in minor trouble with the law, tend to speed, throw or go to parties you usually know almost all the cops. so basically if your a teenager that follows the normal rule of thumb for teenagers you know cops. most the cops here are pretty cool and sometimes only a few years older. I know about 5 of them offhand that owe more money to there credit cards for building up a civic, or eclipse, or whatever than I owe on mine for my car. I also know a couple that have musclecars. yeah the older guys are probably like "god damn imports, get some real power" but they don't discriminate. I mean shit, a good number of punk asshole kids drive old musclecars, at least around here.

Well cops are just like everyone else, only now they 'got da power'.
I am 33 years old....I have gotten in to my share of trouble, but generally I play by the book.
I sold my 1997 GTI VR6 in 1999 to go back to school. I bought a 1996 Saturn SC2....at first I thought it's = suck, but I grew to like it, the handling was very good and braking was great..it was comfortable. Not a bad college car at all and I started 'practicing' mods on it. By the end it was a really nice street car. It wouldn't win much 1/4 mile races (low 15's) nor top speed runs, but it was a fun and cheap car.
Anyway on to the story...me and my Japanese wife are heading to the Island of Palm Beach to Citibank...it's closest branch to us. I enter the island in my blacked out black Saturn and Sheriff Barbrady is on my a$$ the moment I cross the bridge (to the island)...he is 6 inches from me for about 3-4 mins. I do everything right...my wife is confused. We get to Citibank and the asshat pulls up behind me 'T' style. No sirens, no lights. We get out of the car and walk up to the bank (I am thinking he is just being an a$shole and seeing who I am...
as soon as we open the bank door he gets on his squawk box and demands us to come back to the car with our hands in clear view. Needless to say the bank all poured out into the parking lot as this 'cop' tells me how he could have shot me. We went back and forth esp. when I told him flat out I just finished school and I made more than a cop going into it and now much more....plus I would have loved him to shoot him over going into a bank I need to use to conduct international banking with Japan....can't really explain it all here though as you have to know West Palm Beach and the surrounding community.
He gave me a ticket with no explaination, no envelope who to pay, just a citation number and no fine listed.
Turned out he gave me a 'tint' ticket (my windows were both down during my driving, he did have me raise them and checked them, but didn't tell me what the reading was...he checked my lights, my tires, checked seatbelts, and under the hood).
I had to call the police department to find out what to do with the ticket. Apparently this 'new cop' thought working with millionaires made him the new sheriff in town. His Sargeant explained the ticket I got, asked if my tint was illegal (I said it was, only a little though not the limo/5% tint the citation was for), he told me what the fine should be, how to pay it over the phone and that it was not a remove and inspect type offense.
He also assured me that he would be talked too.

true that, bigtime. thats why its fun to call idiots out, for being stupid. oh shit, its the po po, lets ruuuuuuun! its a fuckin human being doing their job, they're WORKING for chrissake. everyone is human, everyone likes to fuck around from time to time. i have customers who are cops, they tell me they want clear sidemarkers even though they are illegal. they've told me "put amber LEDs in there so its less visible, that way some of the other cops wont clown me" .. then he later told me that some hardass cops would even site him, so he's like "can i keep my originals just incase."
serious man.. what a joke. funny shit though, i get e-mails from TONS of domestic car owners wanted "clear lights y0, but with amber bulbs so that they dont get hassled by the po po" -- and what do you think, a DOMESTIC car owner says this.
everyone has to deal with the law, everyone. its just a matter of HOW you plan on dealing with the law.

Here in Boston a few people are trying to round people up to meet up at 24hr car washes because you can stay there as long as you want and not get busted....instead of running from parking lot to parking lot. If a cop does say some thing just throw a few cars in the wash and thats that...whats he gonna do?

What pisses me off, is that if we were driving a bunch of camaro's, mustangs and chevelle's....THE COPS WOULD HAVE LEFT US ALONE. That really burns me...its like, if they see "imports" they ASSUME trouble is brewing.
this has to be one of the more ignorant comments i've read in a while.
point being? if you were ANY group of individuals with noticeable cars in a parking lot at night, you'de get noticed. shit, even if you DIDNT have a car, a bunch of people in a parking lot, would get noticed. the loud speakers, exhausts, motors, and flashy cars will of course, attract attention -- both good and bad.
its not the few seeds that fucked it up for "everyone," its the type of meeting you guys decided to have, that caused the probem.
Folks who run, run because they're either scared or hiding something.
end
Old S13, you can say what you like, but I DO NOT APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENT ("ignorant"). I just want to make that known.
Second I have owned both domestics and imports. When I use to run with domestics, all we ever got at an IN & Out was "hey nice cars" . Because if you have ever been inside one, you'll notice how they market this idea...the nostaglia of a by-gone era where musclecars ruled the streets...
Lastly, if you actually took the time to read my ENTIRE post, you will notice that, although I do not appreciate the WAY the police made their presence known, I ACTUALLY FINISHED THE POST WITH THE QUESTION:
"Have we screwed this up?" "Are we really that bad??"...and it appears, especially from what other posters have mentioned...YES WE ARE. Period. End of story. I am not flaming the cops...maybe questioning their tactics...but thats all...
Everything that folks have mentioned, especially concerning proper ways of organizing, are great suggestions. And it is a service to all those reading this thead to know HOW to do this properly.
I did not run...I walked...I noticed that others were running...
And by the way, I am hiding something...the SR under the hood...

If you want to have a fun and safe meet/ event you should:
Obtain a license or local permit (usually less than 100$) for your event from the local municipality who will then alert law enforcement not to BOTHER your event, also arrange rental fees or agreements w/ the establishment owners/ lease holders where you are going to have your event (so that your parties do not break the law by loitering), and post up rules that bar parties from entering and creating reasons for law enforcement to come to your event because of citizens complaints such as: do not allow stupid behavior to happen such as burn out and public drunkenness.
wylin
09-13-2004, 02:15 PM
Sorry, but until the event is called a car show and treated as such, to business and police it will be treated as a large gathering.
And unfortunately large gatherings with no security = trouble. No matter how much you keep the peace, all it takes is for two assholes to ruin everyone's night. And in America, that happens ALL THE TIME.
So, until someone changes society and make everyone more humble and more respectable towards each other, this game of cop hating will continue.

We should take an example from texas's book (especially california) and allow everyone to carry a firearm as long as it is not concealled. That would reduce the number of ASShats that try to act tough and show off.

I don't think its the matter of what cars are hanging out, but more of what the people look like. think of it this way if you were a cop.
you're driving by and see a bunch of 16-late 20s guys hanging out with their imports, you're going to think eventually a race or fight or something will break out. same thing but this time its guys in there 30s and 40s hanging out. you'll probably cut them a lot more slack. same situation with the young kids but this time musclecars, you'll think the same thing as the first time most likely. and last situation is 30s and 40s with musclecars, you'll think the same thing as the second time.
basically its a matter of who drives what. the majority of modded imports are driven by teenagers/young adult males who as a general demographic group are trouble makers, not meaning major felony crimes, but just mischevous stuff. whereas most musclecars, are driven by guys in there upwards of 30 who usually are generally law abiding citizens. if you were a cop who would you be more wary about hanging out in a random parking lot? businessmen, or testerone filled young adult males?
I rest my case. Your witness.

Thank you, I will start my cross...
What mainly comes to my mind would be what is currently being pushed as the norm...Imports driven by stupid kids...I call this a "recency effect"...the most recent available information would be stupid kids driving imports...So what I am saying is, IMPORT CARS themselves are a "cue" for mischievious individuals...hard to face eh? I think it sucks.
However, if it were a group of decent looking musclecars, with some mid twenties drivers (I'm 27)...I bet they would be left alone, if not complimented on there cars...Face it, people, especially the older gen's can appreciate musclecars MUCH more than imports....on average...Again the location fits in here...In & Out markets this very musclecar, nostalgic past...
Now mind you, I limited my comments to CARS, you are talking about people, and I have already agreed that folks were not being smart about their presence...
nismo2491
09-13-2004, 11:00 PM
Yes I did bring up groups. I did not say that imports are limited to the teenagers/young adults/mid-late 20's males (just for easier reading lets say 30-)but I merely stated that it the major demographic. whereas the major demographic for musclecars is middle aged+ (for easier reading we'll use 30+, by no means is 30 the definite cutoff) males. also if you look at minor crime rates (ie street racing, loud parties, noise problems, underage drinking, minor drug use, etc) the majority of those are being commited by the 30- guys. yes there will always be a few 30+ guys involved in that stuff but normally its the 30- guys (And in no way am I excluding females from this its just that they are a definite minority in the car scene)
here we face the problem of image. the image of the 30- group is young, dumb and full of cum. whereas the image of the 30+ group is of course more mature, less apt o break laws, etc.
now here is where that image comes into greater play. as a cop if you look at a group of 30-'ers with decent musclecars you will most likely think somebody who has a steady job, good head on their shoulders, and generally more mature. if as a cop you look at a group of 30+'ers with imports these guys usually stick the more expensive imports, ie the late model rx-7, rx-8, bmw's, 350z, etc. the musclecars of imports if you will.
also take into play the groups reaction. as soon as he hit his lights they ran even though they weren't doing anything illegal. as a cop if that happens what would you think?
personally if I am at any type of meet and a cop rolls up I am usually the one to walk over and introduce myself to the officer in the most mature and polite way I can and ask if there's a problem. if there is he will then usually tell me plain out. be it the building owner does not want us there, we don't have permission to be there, etc. if there is not a problem he will usuallysay something like he's just checking it out to make sure we're behaving. I then go relay that information to the group and if he said we have to leave everybody leaves in a normal manner, rather than getting out as fast as possible, if he says we're cool we stay.
in closing of this counter-counter-counterpoint I ask this question.
If you as a cop, see a group of 30- imports hanging out somewhere and a group of 30+ imports hanging out who are you more apt to bother?
KEvin
my response shall come tomorrow, I'm hitting the sack.

Kevin you are a good sport...At least you acknowledge the fact that I have proven my point...
...You note that 30-'ers with decent musclecars are perceived more favorably...
Thank you.
Now on to what you mentioned....
I agree. 30-'ers with "upscale" imports will most likely be perceived in the same fashion as 30-'ers with decent muscle cars...
One thing to note here...It can be said, that the honda's of today are really no different then the mustangs and camaros of yesterday...Cheap, available cars you can modify.
I would, as a cop, based soley on the INDIVIDUALS, be skeptical of the 30- group...Again, your question focuses on individuals rather than cars...Buts its cool, I am not going to bullshit to make a point...your right about individuals...and so I wrap this up by saying...
Closing arguement...
Who is more associated with import cars? Young stupid kids/racers. The media promotes this, individuals (by their actions) prove this...and it all ends up in Joe-bag'o-donuts-cop's head. And THAT is why imports attract MORE attention than musclecars.
The defense rests your honor.

i never get hassled with my car, its got an SR and has a complete stripped interior. i've had them ask me if its stolen, i tell them that i'm rewiring the car and they leave me alone.
if your car looks like its ready for F&F, then thats your problem for making your car excessively flashy and having poor taste. not saying you are or arent, i cant tell since ive never seen your car -- but i can speak for my OWN car and say i dont get hassled.
now, if its ANY authority that IS going to waste time hassling, its CHP and motorcycle cops. if you're gonna talk shit, atleast talk about them.. because they're the ones who hassle EVERYONE.. not just imports, ANY ONE.
wake up man, you just make things seem like the world revolves around you and your SR. big stink, you should've walked away and gotten a soda. a car sitting in a parking lot isnt going to get towed by the cops.. "fleeing" from the scene is. people run when they've got shit to hide.

Its good to know you are comfortable about being asked if your car is stolen...I figure thats obvious when I hand him the registration. I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy someone, no matter who, accusing me of stealing.
You say you don't get hassled, but cops have asked you if your car is stolen...hmmm...ok. I buy that. Then you say the CHP harasses everyone...whats it gonna be? Are you hassled or not?
My car is not a F&F look'a like, no stickers, no neon, no street racing...
Lastly, no, I do not think the world revolves around me and my SR, there were quite a few individuals in that parking lot besides me...I was merely questioning the police tatics, and the discrimination they have toward import enthusiasts...or, like Nismo stated, 30-'ers...Maybe you like to be spotlighted...like you are when they think you stole your car, but I don't.
I DID walk to my car...and left the premises..."fleeing from the scene"??? I was asked to leave...I left. why push my luck? I just spent plenty of money on an engine I would like to retain. That I DO CARE ABOUT.

Everytime something like that happens to my group and I, we stay where we are calm and wait for all the ricers to haul ass out of there. Then, when the Police come and ask us what we're doing, we simply tell them we're just hanging out and didn't feel like running from them as it would cause problems and a dangerous situation.
Most of the time, they simply tell us that we did the right thing and leave us alone.
As long as you're smart about things when those situations arise, you won't have a problem.
