View Full Version : ca18det oil pump questions
I picked up a s13 the other week with a stuffed oil pump. Just wondering when I'm replace the oil pump + front oil seal will I have to replace the back one or is that presses into something like the front? Also the manual says I have to raise my engine with a crane just to pull of the oil pan. Is there another or easier way to remove the oil pan?

oil pump is gone => engine needs a cleaning and a teardown . Changing the pump itself is the least of your worries here, you need to remove the engine. FWIW swapping another one in could cost you less.
Anyway... you can also use a crane to support the engine and drop the crossmember.
I remember just swapping my oil pan, and it was a nightmare to fit back, even with the engine lifted with a crane. The oil pan uses liquid gasket to seal, and there barely is room to put it back in place without touching anything with that fresh gasket on it.
A teardown like a rebuild or just block and head?

Hold on, let me get my cristal ball and i'll be able to see what happened inside your engine from the other side of the world.
Geez a little advice or simple I have no idea man would of been nice.

The problem is that you should not have bought a car with "a stuffed oil pump" if you didn't know what the consequences of "a stuffed oil pump" are. Oil lubricates and cools things, so the engine should have damaged bearings and local overheat everywhere. Basically anything that moves may need changing. The engine block and head even could be damaged. If the previous owner was driving when the oil light came on (it lights at 8psi i believe), it will have done a lot of damage.
Anyway, here are your choices:
1/ sell the car as is. Most cost effective thing you can do now.
2/ Remove that engine, swap another identical and in GWO in. Second most cost effective and it will give you some basic knowledge about cars.
3/ Remove the engine, tear it all down and rebuild it. Not worth it, and you lack the needed knowledge for it. Doing it yourself (or with "friends who knows about it") usually result in a busted engine 500 miles later. I'd say this is the worst option.
4/ Remove the engine, only change the oil pump and hope / pray for the best. IMHO the second worst option, a weak/ dead oil pump will have done some damage, so you are basically wasting time and money. The engine could just blow 100 miles later - or run fine for years if you were very lucky. Luck is not my religion though, and if the car was sold "as is with a stuffed oil pump"... well. There is a reason the oil pump was not changed: "not worth it".
5/ Remove the engine, swap a better one in. Get ready for a 10K$ bill though, and then you are going to need some work and money on the chassis. Good option if you were considering making a track car and you had money ready. Not good if you don't.
Thanks for the honesty... I'll probably just get it cleaned and rebuilt buy a motor shop
