View Full Version : Oil pump issues

So I got my car working the other day, and took it out for a drive. It's a ka24det. After driving for like 45 minutes and doing around 5-7 pulls never really going past 5200 rpm, my brand new turbo blew. I also noticed near the end of my drive that my oil pressure dummy light would come on at idle and ten off when I started driving (this could have been happening the whole drive)

I ended up pulling my crank pulley off, and sure enough, there was an extra woodruff key that was stuck behind the pulley, and had punched a hole into the timing cover in front of and at the bottom of the oil pump.

So I need a new pump/front cover, but I'm paranoid about my engine now.
I didn't hear any knocking or abnormal noises, but should I replace rod and main bearings to be safe?

What you should do is an inspection of the oil, then maybe have a look at the bearings and other internals, why? You didn't hear the key scraping the he'll out of the front cover! Also why was there an extra woodruff key? Why didn’t you notice the oil, on the ground or the engine bay?

Ya, I plan on doing an inspection. If I don't find any metal shavings, I'm wondering if damage could have still been done that could snowball into something worse eventually?
If I take the bearings off to look at them, may as well replace them at that point..

Someone who had the engine before me or whoever built it must have hit the woodruff key with the pulley while sliding it on, knocking it behind the oil seal. I had to pry it out of the hole it had punched in the cover. I'm surprised it wasn't banging around
Wasn't leaking any oil, the hole leads from the pump down into the pan

she's junk clark

Tear it down and check it out. How you even got that all to fit in there is beyond me. Oh well!
