View Full Version : car shuts off after short ram install...

Battery moved to the trunk. so I installed an intake where the battery used to be.
My new pipe only had one thing for the hoses coming out of it instead of two so I used a T fitting and hooked up both hoses.
Now when I start the car it will just die. I reset the ECU, and checked for leaks.
I do hear a hissing sound coming from around the charcoal canister, but I looked for a leak for 20 minutes and didn't come up with anything. I even sprayed the hoses down with Starting fluid... no luck.
So now my car doesn't idle and almost dies when I come to a stop.... but it sounds KICK ASS!!!
What should I do?

do you have a filter on it?

your MAF is out of position, you have to put it in the same position as before. Even if it is connected, but upside down or something it will start but die out.

did I have a filter on what?
There's a K&N filter on the intake.... but surely you don't think I'm that stupid...
Thanks guys, I will try to adjust the MAF tomorrow...

I've known of users to route their windshield washer lines into their vacuum system. :ughd:
Just eliminating possibilities.

S13 or S14?
If S14, what did you do with the tiny vacuum line on the bottom of the intake???

I'm gonna guess S13, seeing as how his sig says he has a '90 S13.
Call me crazy.
If it WAS S14 though, I'd want to know how he extended his MAFS wires.
The problem is probably something dumb like a leak in the intake piping or a disconnected vacuum line.

I know it by the hissing sound. On the big line, the one that goes under the intake mani is not getting enough vacuum. the evap purge system is not getting enough suction.

Hehehe..I have the sigs blocked in my preferences - I hate that shit popping up on every post.
Except that guys with the titty-shake(.gif)...haha.

I don't think the MAF position has anything to do with it. I can safely say this due to the fact I have my MAF upside down on my S14 custom shirt ram...no issues at all.
As Orion said, I think you might be missing the smaller vaccum line that goes to the cluster of intake tubes underneather the TB....kinda next to the IACV tube..the larger one...

ditto, i have the same exact setup. short ram in place of where battery is supposed to be, maf is upside down.

when i had my 92 with KA24DE I was having the same problem car would start but in safe more so it would not rev above 3000 and would die out. I don't know how it is for s14 but im pretty sure because someone told me about my position of my maf and thats the only thing I change and then it worked fine.

car is fixed... for the moment anyway..
Yeah the position of the MAF didn't seem to make a difference.
I changed the rubber connector between the MAF and the Pipe to one that fits exaclty perfect. Went from a 3"/3" to a 2 1/2"/3".
I drove around for a while, and the idle is now perfect. The car idles way better than before it had the short ram...
Hope it stays that way...
And yes I had double checked all the vacuum lines.
Thanks for the suggestions guys...

ha... car wasn't fixed... it is now though...
You guys were right. That tube under the TB needs a lot of air. I JB welded an outlet on my pipe. Works perfect.

did you gain any top end with the short ram? i've been thinking about doing this. i have a intake on my s14 ka right now, and i was wondering if this would be worth the effort.

so whats the follow up Thieu? Did you get it working okay? If so, how were the power gains...if any? Please be specific. Did you get better or worse bottom end, and better or worse top end? Thanks
Thieu

Sorry for the late response.
The two main changes I would say are:
1) Noise:
Car is much throatier, as would be expected. This is especially true for lower rpms.
2) Top end gain:
Huge improvement there. Note this is a mostly stock SOHC motor w/ 140k miles on it. Has an exhaust, removed AIV/EGR, slightly bigger injectors (10% over stock), and nothing major besides that...
After I JB welded another outlet on the pipe for the tube below the TB, the car idled and ran fine. It's been 3-4 weeks and still works fine.
Any other questions?

thread resurection!
how was the bottom end, and how was the mid range? The KA already has a good deal of torque, so I wouldnt mind sacrificing some low end for top end. Would you say that the engine wants to breath more past 5500? Or does it still kinda die out up high?
Thieu

I'd say lots more top end... KA is no rev machine... so not much change there.
But better throttle response throughout and butt dyno says maybe a few more ponies... nothing drastic.

do u have an exhuast? cuz i noticed when i got my intake and had no exhuast yet, u can actually feel the car wouldnt exhale, a nice header would help too

Not really... Only a Magnaflow muffler for now.
I'm working on 2.5" catback piping going on the car soon.
I haven't noticed any problems as far as the car "exhaling"... but I'm sure the bigger piping will make a big difference.
