Suprareal

This thread will Showcase progress photos of my 2nd current S13 build.
93' 240sx converted to a "true" Silvia, meaning RHD, Front end swap, and SR.
And will include tips on how to successfully convert for people who might need the help.
This build is Visual oriented VS my track hatch build found here : http://zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=487054
Current as of 2/1/20

Let’s start this off
When I first bought the car as a shell for 200$. With no real intentions of what I’d do with it.

Started the Firewall swap first. I did this the most "legit" way you can possibly do a firewall swap. I say this because there's no real way to be completely proper about this.
Every single spot weld was drilled out and welded back up. This includes the JDM wiper/cowl section that people often dont bother doing while swapping.
If you choose to include the cowl in your swap you will loose your original stamped vin number so make sure you keep the old firewall piece if you plan to make in legal.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5903_zpstn6j8nej.jpg
Make sure to seam seal your welds and creases making sure they wont leak. I through on some paint for rust.
Keep in mind the e brake bracket will need to be removed and retrofitted if you did not have the JDM one like me. I was able to cut the old one up and use it with the USDM handle.

Here is a mockup making sure everything still fits good
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_2673_zpslbeqzkzb.jpg
For wiring I am using the JDM body harness from a RPS13 so I needed to rip some wires out that i would not be using and connect to my tail light harness. This can vary from what car your clip was cut from and what shell you are converting.
If you plan to keep the auto seat belts you will have to wire them in yourself as the JDM s13 never came with them but a airbag instead. As for me i ditched the auto belts for s14 belts.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5932_zpsugt48xn1.jpg
Since this is a visual build i did a tuck and threw all the wiring under the dash. The vent housings are not compromised by this, everything still sits where it should. The fuse boxes sit in the glove box via a tab welded to the dash bar. The glovebox has to be cut in order for it to close as you can see.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_2720_zpsha3vs59i.jpg
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6964_zpsbxxog6ld.jpg
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6950_zpsbux9o5te.jpg
I welded 2 bolts to the dash bar to connect my grounds to.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6961_zpststzrpmm.jpg
I cant finish the wire tuck completely until i have the motor in place so i can cut to fit the engine harness so I started on the tubs. This is my second time doing tubs and was done in less than 3 days work by myself with essentially just a angle grinder and welder. If this is your first time don't be scared to jump on this project. I used 1 10'' trailer fender cut in half with sheets of 16GA scrap. Cardboard templates are all you need to get started.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5939_zpszs0s9dow.jpg
If this is your first time doing this or new to welding... take the time to make all your ends sit as flush as possible in order to get the best weld.
If your OCD like me you can level out your car on jack stands so you are able to keep your tubs level and identical on both sides.

You can run small tacks around all of the seams and it will probably be strong enough but my preference is to run short beads around. Unlike my tubs in my Hatch these will be seam sealed for a cleaner look.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6322_zpshezjacpk.jpg

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6317_zps6hz4gid8.jpg
If your tubbing your going to end up stitching the towers, again I don't like the looks of small tacks running around so i did small beads again.
I decided to plate off the front of the frame wells as well as they will later be used for bash bar supports.

Ill be running a front mount and decided against doing anything extraordinary with the piping routing even though i wanted to. So i just went the traditional way and cut out the holes. Later I will be tigging my own piping.
If you have a 3" hole saw or the money to buy a nice one I highly recommend it.
I don't have one big enough so i just drilled a hole and used a reamer bit until it was big enough.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6966_zpsq2om3grt.jpg
My front clip was original to the digital climate control so it was all plug and play for me essentially. For those who are thinking about putting one in your s13, do it especially if you have working A/C you will love it.
A/C on this car is still an idea im not sure if i want to go through with yet, well see.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_6959_zpstz0hj7us.jpg
My plans motor wise were constantly changing before i finally decided to go SR. I even thought about throwing in the viper V10 while working on Dean Kearney's new Viper. After research and measuring it was not a good choice for me. It is much longer than a JZ motor and does not add up in performance VS a LS swap while also thinking about finance.
And a pic of Robbie's car after the crash at Long Beach !

Its great having a girlfriend who actually supports the hobby. She bought me this 20ft long canopy that serves as my constant work space and will also serve as the paint booth.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_7058_zpsabz7ntwr.jpg
Next was something i contemplated for a while but came out better than expected. After seam sealing ( which was is difficult to make a neat seam ) i decided to try making some areas completely seamless.
I used fiberglass bondo for this, only enough to flush out the edges. If your doing this try not to build it up to high anywhere because it will have more of a chance cracking later.

Vert Will a full on KA missile with just a seat and steering wheel being done under 700$ just to have a little fun with.
Partial cage will be added onto as well.

Don't think i mentioned this but the rack is HICAS. For those who dont know the HICAS rack reaches full steering lock quicker that a ordinary rack. Even though this wont be a drift car it will still be a compliment. I'm currently working on a small angle upgrade for the car for fun.

The flake is added into the clear mix right before shooting. You can add as much as you like to make more or less dramatic look. Also laying multiple coats will give different looks. Everything I've done so far was one thick coat.

Due to the plans of this car being a show car I will be paying alot of attention to wheel fitment. lower control arms extended by 50mm (2'') will give me loads of camber which will work perfect for my setup because i am using stock tension rods and will be adjusting caster with the coil camber plates. Fitment idea will be similar to Justin Shreeves car.

Stock tension rods for now. Ill adjust caster with the camber plates on the coils if needed. The car wont be driven much at all so i don't think aftermarket tension rods are necessary for now.

Previous owner hacked up the stock fender wells and cut it out partly for inter cooler piping and had some sheet metal covering up some hole with JB weld. That's pretty much the main reason. Other than that they look baller especially with a wire tuck.
And yeah its being built for show but when the motor is broken in it will see some track time im sure Just not anything nearly as much hatch :D

Since im using my modded lower control arms my tie rods needed extra room to adjust. Im using s14 tein inners and aftermarket s14 outers.
I could have just ordered adjustable outers and that would have worked but i like to have custom made parts whenever i have the chance so we made these adjustable links to go between the inner and outer tie rods. All work was done at my friends shop Bangma Machine Works in Bell Gardens, CA. One side is female to thread into the inner rods while the other side is male thread to thread into the outer rods.
Also made a couple of spacers for the rack to increase the angle since the tein inner rods have extra thread for it anyways.

I wont be making any more progress for a few months because i will be painting my hatch. But as soon as that's done this build will be back and active starting with the motor install, and what comes after that is a secret.

The hatch is finally done being painted. Its a very dark black cherry pearl and im happy with the way it came out for painting outside.
Partway through paint El Nino happened and blew away my tent ripped it to shreds and pushed the frame into my passenger door. So i had to finish it up without any shelter.

That being said the Silvia is back in progress.
First ill be finishing the assembly of the motor.
For power steering im using a KA pump. I was stuck with a mix of HICAS SR, regular SR, and KA pumps/brackets but nothing that directly bolted up so i cut and welded the 2 brackets in order to work and it came out great.

I will still be using the freddy intake. All new coolant hoses under and behind. Tubular bottom mount manifold i will be using with the T25.
Water pump pulley is actual Greddy. The other 2 pulleys im unsure about, hopefully later i will come across the other 2 Greddys.

With long thoughts of swapping this into the coupe instead of the SR i decided against it feeling the SR is better fitting for the feel I want for this car. So the JZ will just sit until something else comes up.

I decided to do 3 separate looms to my headlights, 2 running down the passenger side and 1 on the driver.
One loom being wires running to the ac condenser sensors and E fan for AC.
One loom dedicated to blinkers both in the bumper and the side markers.
And the last loom for main headlights (all 3 in the projectors), and corner running lights.
The corner running lights and yellow inside lights on the headlights will turn on with the first click of the headlight switch with the headlights obviously coming on with the second click.
Im not sure if Silvia's used the amber sections of the corner lights as blinkers but that's what i am wiring them up as.

But when i removed this motor out of the car i bought it from (with same mounts) it did not sit as high as it does now. Im unsure why this is if anyone has any ideas leave a comment.
I will either machine these mounts down or buy some new stock style mounts to fix this if i cant figure it out.

I think you can rotate the mounts and it may lower them.
Also, xcessive sells 3/4" drop brackets which I ended up using on my KA.
I'd assume they fit SR.

Lower harness is now extended. Being the trans sensors, alternator charge, starter signal, and starter hot wire. Loomed and fed through the firewall. Everything will still plug into the fuse box as if it were stock making it easy to trouble shoot anything that might come up down the road.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5374_zpsxrpgjnqa.jpg
This hole drill size is slightly larger than the size of the heater core holes in the firewall so the grommets that go in said holes fit perfectly in this making it appear almost stock.

A local shop here called Baker precision. Im sure you can find someone online that sells what you need. These are crimp on so would need access to a real crimp machine. I think the one they have here is hydraulic.
Or use A/N fittings but will be alot more costly.
These cost me a total of 30$ per the 2. So in total with all braided brake lines and clutch line i shouldn't be spending more than 70$ total while using A/N would probly be 150$+

I have a few kinks to work out. It drives smooth but the boost doesn't pull even tho it is building. The rpm does not work and the Bov opens very easily and might need a stiffer spring. Nothing that cannot be fixed.

Hard to explain without a picture but if you open the hood you will see exaclty where the stopper is on the hinge you just cut the little corner off. Thats it.

My first guess to why the motor wasn't boosting like it should was pointing at the fuel pump since it was abnormally loud. When i pulled it, it was obvious. I drained the gas tank before starting the car for the first time so im assuming this was old fuel stuck to the walls of the tank and the sloshing around of the new fuel is washing it off.
I through a new sock filter on and the pump is now quieter and boost feels much better. Might get clogged again the same way until the tank is cleaner but i will deal with it.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5790_zpsj3wknzam.jpg
Ive now put around 90 miles on it and havent ran into any other problems. Drives very smooth.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5759_zpsr0ni8oxh.jpg
One of the next things im fixing is the alignment of the front end as you can see the RH side sags low and there are gaps on the hood area. Ill be making a basic bash bar for it.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q558/suprareal/IMG_5755_zpsnypm3dsm.jpg
I have absolutely no misfires but the car likes to back fire on very slow decel. (slowing down in gear to a stop) Sometimes small in pipe flames and sometimes for feet like this. I'm assuming its just leaning out to clean out but i don't have a wide band right now to see.

I haven't had to much time to focus on the silvia in the last few months due to other projects.
First got my Work VSSS re-lipped. Fronts are now 18x9.5 with 4" lips and rears are 18x11 with 5.5" lips. With the recently acquired tyre sponsor Zestino I had to get them wrapped up in them !
I decided they will look better on my hatch so ill be looking for a different set for the silvia.

Finnally got around to getting the hood release/gas lid lever on the RH side. i did not have the correct bracket for this so i used the LHD one, flipped it, cut it, made a couple spacers, bolted the lever to it then welded that bracket to the chassis since this side of the chassis does not have threaded holes for the bracket and sheet metal is to thin in my opinion to tap.

A couple friends and I had our first track day at Grange Motor Circuit and i wasn't able to get my hatch out there due to not having a trailer. I was able to drive my friends SR hatch and had a incredible time. First thing i did when we got back was design a trailer to build.
Engineered to slide gave me the idea i based my design around after talking with him he gave me alot of pointers, very helpful guy. Very light weight and low trailer. Im using the same design of a drop knuckle as his just not as low. These knuckles use the hubs from a 240sx rear. As you can see i even through on a set of "type x" wheels !

Oh man where do I start... a lot has happened over the past year since updating this post both for the Silvia and personally.
Here’s one thing that hasn’t really changed much. My hatch. It’s been seeing a few track days when I can with only a few upgrades.
The Ls is on its second rebuild, low oil pressure lead to a spun cam bearing at the last run of the day at grange. When rebuilding a thru in a mild cam and got a flash tune. Running and performing better than ever now but will actually be swapping in a 2JZ soon.

So back to the Silvia ...
The pictures will do most of the talking for me. Here’s how it sat for a while
As you can see the doors changed. Crimsonrocket came thru with complete jdm Silvia doors from a car he was parting out. Lucky enough he had all the matching locks including the ignition, trunk, and glovebox which is extremely nice.

Picked up a set of VSKF and Re lipped them to a similar spec. 18x9.5 and 18x11
I really wanted to use oem metal front fenders but that obviously wasn’t going to work. The rears didn’t take much work since I had already pulled the fenders considerably.

Got around to making the front and rear bash bars before paint. I’ve been hoarding these frp 40mm fenders for quite some time and decided to repair them and use them
The rest of the kit needed tons of work to the point I should have just bought new panels but decided to save some money since I know how to repair them.
Everything is duraflex. Took some time getting everything to line up and fit the way it needed to be of course but came out great.

Initially I was 100% certain I wanted to match my hatch with the 326 power wing but ultimately decided against it. Just didn’t flow well enough without rear over fenders in my opinion.
My 2nd choice was the s14 Kouki wing. Can’t go wrong with that. I’ve never tried to be different or out of the box with this car just simple and clean.

I came up with a simple yet intuitive way of mounting the headlights. Often times the tabs on fiberglass fenders snap off and this is a solution. I offer them for 45$ shipped if anyone’s interested.
Unbolt your fender without having to take your headlights off.

I got busy with work and let the paint cure up for about 2 weeks before I started wet sanding and buffing the entire car panel by panel.
At this point in the build you can’t stop looking at what all your hard work has finally come to be. Reassembly is always a fun part.
I went with led tail lights from eBay. Love the look and cleanliness of them and they are very bright.

The car spends its life either sitting in the driveway, on the trailer, or in the neighbors garage. I’ve put a whopping 80 KM on the motor so far. I soon hope to have it shown in local shows or booths at events. Also hopping for a feature with superstreet ...
Went ahead and bought a new truck for towing these cars around. 01 dodge Cummins. Basically a oversized and diesel JZ I always say.

I came across a S14 SR Head with valve cover for 50$. Decided to use it to make the S13.4 hybrid cover since I had a spare s13 cover already. If you don’t already know the reason for doing this is the upgraded internal baffling the s14 cover has over the s13. No need for a stock external catch can.
Since I do powder coating now I’m able to make all my metal parts look great. Wish I had access to this when first stating on this car !
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190110/34e93945a7dac57d6529cb51f0d999c9.jpg
Finally got around to rebuilding the R33 front brakes for it. Blue powder matching the valve cover.
All new hardware, pads, and braided lines of course

Since I’m installing the brakes my wheels will not clear them and a 7mm or so spacer will need to be added.
The problem is my wheel is already maxed out against my fender (camber maxed). To make extra room I have to tweak my set up.
I’m replacing my 2” extended control arms with a fresh set of 1.5” arms. This time they are tig welded! Of course I paint matched them the same black with purple flake the old ones were.

Awesome progress.
Its amazing that people don't understand how simple / relatively low cost a powder coating set up for small parts is. I have a handful of friends who do it in old home ovens. Typically having a blasting set up is the hardest part.

Hybrid valve cover and brakes are now on. Had the rotors turned but there already rusting since the car doesn’t drive anywhere haha
The new strut bar I’ll talk more on once it’s finished.

I learned that when doing this s13.4 valve cover conversion you’ll need to trim the RH rocker stoppers if your running them. Or else the cover will not fit due to it having a extra fin/baffle.
So instead of trimming the inside of the cover I decided to trim the stopper.
( notice how much is cut. After installing the cover take off your oil cap and inspect the cam does not make contact with the stopper due to the cover pushing downwards on it)
The stopper still works perfectly fine this way.

Tell me about it ... still trying to dial in my blast cabinet. Actual powder is super simple. I’m curing in a small cooking smoker

A while ago I was building a strut bar which I finished then down the road someone made a offer on it so ... I sold it. Here is the finished product

I felt the dimple plate down the middle didn’t flow with the rest of the car so I made another without it and CNC cut out the bolt ring to strengthen the entire thing
My intercooler piping was old work and didn’t aesthetically represent the quality work I do now so I redid it all !
Might be hard to tell at first but now has much less pie cuts and welds while the welds are much better than before

Reminds me of a time I was at a red light and a kid holding his dads hand in the crosswalk pointed at my hatch and said “daddy is that a race car ?”
