My speedo doesnt work properly, right now when the car is off it sits on the far right side like its topping out but the car isnt even on. It just works when it wants to. could this be a bad ground of some sort?

Doubtful. Ground to the speedometer is common for the cluster, if your other gauges had problems then it might be the cause. Sounds to me like a bad unit.
