View Full Version : How to remove clutch pad?

I'm trying to remove the clutch pad so I can replace it and so I can't put the engine on the stand. I took the clutch off, but the clutch pad bolts won't come out. They're stuck in for some reason and whenever I turn it the wheel turns around so it's no use. I already sprayed them with WD-40 and PB Blaster multiple times but they won't loosen. I'm sure if I put more torque on it I could do it but that's not the main problem. I can't even twist them because the pad rotates when I do! How can I keep it from rotating? Also would the bolts maybe have to turn right instead of left to remove them? I know some bolts are like that so I'm just wondering.

What I think you mean is the flywheel. Impact wrench to take them off ONLY. Use a torque wrench to put them on with blue loctite.
Make sure to resurface your flywheel before install. Keep everything spotlessly clean during install or you'll ruin your clutch. You might have to adjust the rod on the clutch master cylinder pedal, too. Also break it in properly.

Sr20?
No the bolts are lefty Losey, and get an FSM. Also get a 1\2" ratchet a 27mm socket and breaker bar or part of the jack handle from a floor jack. Go to work! Impact guns are handy tools, but I only use them for alternator pulleys.
Everything else is done by hand.

Yeah I meant the flywheel. I tried an impact wrench today at about 270 ft lbs of torque and the bolt didn't even budge. I've spent all day yesterday and today trying to figure out how and nothing is working.

Rb20, and how would I keep the wheel from spinning? I've tried lodging something in but it always falls out.

If you use the ratchet breaker bar combo, you have two ways you can do it. If the engine is on the lift lower it to the ground or a bench. Place the ratchet and socket on the crank bolt, either let the ratchet breaker bar wedge against the floor or hold it in your hand, use your other hand to work the flywheel bolts. You could also ask someone to help you break the bolts loose.
If you happen to have one arm then wedging the ratchet/breaker bar against the floor would be the second best option.
The italicized text is the best.

I'm not knocking you and I also use those same methods (or a huge extension pole, or wrench on one of the other flywheel bolts to counter the loosening moment), but removing the flywheel bolts may be a challenge if he breaks torque on the crank pulley bolt first.
OP- With the impact it wont spin free immediately, hold the trigger down and let it sorta jackhammer it free.
If a 270ftlb impact cant break those loose you might need some heat... Thoughts on this anyone?

When I need to stop the flywheel from turning so I can loosen/tighten the flywheel bolts, I grab it with a small pipe wrench and turn the flywheel until the pipe wrench handle stops against the block.

It also works when you want to torque the crank pulley down. To loose the crank pulley, I put a 1/2 drive ratchet on the bolt, and set the handle against a block of wood, then bump the starter.

If your planning on replacing the flywheel bolts or any bolts that could potentially get damaged, use the impact gun.
The flywheel bolts are torqued to 101ftlb the crank is 112ftlb by applying the torque to the flywheel bolts directly, you shouldn't break loose the crank bolt, but if it does better to find out now the later.
This is just my way, I'm old school! I never use them on lug nuts period and won't let tire changer use them either. They hate it.

Gotta say this is the easiest/simplest way to protect the flywheel and break it free.
Got give credit where it's due this gentleman replied to my thread on Facebook.
Can be used to loosen or tighten. See picture attached.

I would love to this thing up because I think that's my only option but I don't know anyone that has anything to heat it up

That'll work as well. ingenuity you can come up with something that'll work, because you have too.
