ok so one of my arp head studs broke as i was torqueing them down ! dammit! :rl:

so i go to carquest and get a broken bolt extracting tool.

ok so i drill the hole for the extracting tool, that went fine, then i "tap" the extracting tool down with a hammer as the instructions tell me to.
that went fine...

so then i take my "t-handle" and start reversing the tool and broken bolt out... and after 2 turns the damn tool snaps! WTF!

so now i'm pretty much fuc*ed and :Owned:

what tool can i purchase to remove both the extracting tool AND the broken bolt? i ordered another set of arp head studs from jgy and it should be here tomorrow. g'dam this fawkin engine!

i don't want to have to drill it out and helicoil it , that's my last last last last resort. someone help me out! i only have a few more days till i go back to school.

ps : s13 redtop sr20det engine on an engine hoist

when drilling and extracting, take you time and do not try to drill too fast or extract too fast. Also use extracting oil to keep the metal from overheating and snapping on you like it did. I know this comes late, but better to know now, than never. Oh yeah, removing the extractor tool is a fuckin bitch, cause that motherfucker is forged, and really hard to drill through.

tohelp prevent this next time oil up the threads before you try to torque then down. you'll get a more accurate torque number too.

the threads WERE oiled with molylubricant.

and i did use oil when trying to extract the broken stud , i also didn't try to rush it... after 2 turns the tool snapped on me.

i guess i'll try to drill it out and try with a larger extractor tool...i hope this one doesn't break too!

are ARP studs supposed to be stronger or what? if so, how the hell did you manage to break a performance stud?

The extractor is made from high carbon steel, use a small punch and slowly shatter it to remove it. After that, drill it up 1 or 2 sizes largerand try again.

This thread reminds me of my friend putting the head on his SR back on. 80inch lbs or something it said. He toqued 80 ft lbs!!! When I got there, he told me he couldn't get the bolt to tighten. hahaha, "80 ft lbs?" "That's what you torque the nuts on the rims too!" <---me

^ what ? ? ?

arp specifies to follow the fsm torque sequence but use their specified tq : 65 ft lbs.

on FA, they've been known to succesfully tq the head studs to 80ft lbs.

anyways, i took the block to the machine shop and he got it out.... best 16 bucks i've spent yet!

Suicide is only good if it's in a public place. If you can't affect the lives of other when you die, it's not worth doing.
