tried leaving a friends driveway 2 nights ago and car wouldnt go into reverse, the shifter wouldnt even move in the direction of reverse as if something was blocking it so i figured something was blocking it or something had loosened and was binding up not letting it go into reverse, so i push it out of the driveway and start driving home, no issues with any forward gears. i get out onto the highway and start cruising along and as i come up to my exit i take the car out of 5th and it comes out hard and try to shift into 4th to drive through town and the same thing happens, now no 4th gear, i tried to put it back into 5th and no 5th gear either, then i try 3rd and no 3rd gear and finally the car shifted into 2nd and i drove it home in 2nd

so after i got home i took the shifter out to see if anything was up with that and it looked like trans fluid had leaked all over the place, the previous owner had "forgotten" to put the front two bolts to mount the shifter :tardrim: I unbolted and pulled the shifter out and it was pretty much dry inside the trans.

is it possible it leaked and being low on fluid permanently damaged something? what is it that would be damaged?

before i pull the trans im going to fill it up with fluid and run it and see if that fixes it, if not the trans is coming out and being taken apart, what fluid should i run in it?

Had the same thing happen to mine years ago. Made a pull and it wouldn't come out of 5th. Finally got it out of 5th and the only gears I had left were 1 and 2. Made the swap to a Z32 trans and never looked back.

I've read where people have saved our transmissions w/ royal purple gear oil

I didn't. Mainly because I knew it was junk and I wasn't salvaging anything from it. My guess would be that the baulk rings and syncros were destroyed and then took out the gears. I did cut the input shaft off to use as a clutch alignment tool.

Much happier with the Z trans. It is a bit more notchier than the SR, but it's a positive feeling putting it into gear.

yeah i have a line on another trans now, but i think i might save up to do a z32/z33 trans swap down the road

if i was smart id just start saving to swap my ly6 into it but id like to have the car to drive for the summer so the sr20 will stay for now

Shiiit man ya trannys and diffs are not forgiving. Half a lap with low fluid or no fluid and they are done for good... and to add insult to injury it ruins EVERYTHING and 98% of the time warps the case as well as the input and output shafts. Just be glad its a $150 nissan trans and not a Hewland sequential!!! Bummer though. Expensive clutch alignment tool/paperweight/boat anchor/lamp stand...
