View Full Version : Bizarre water pump problem / thermostat replacement

I went to replace my thermostat on the 240 (I have a 91 KA in there), after I replaced it I start to fillup the radiator and engine block with water.

Water starts leaking out of the bottom of the water pump through a hole, so I just plug it with my finger because I don't want coolant all over the driveway. Then water starts leaking out of the top hole in the water pump...ARG.

Thinking maybe something is screwed up with the water pump I just take plain water and fillup the coolant system and turn the car over hoping the hole will stop leaking. Nope. Now I have a good stream of water coming out.

All I did was replace the stupid thermostate. I didn't touch the water pump. What gives?

(I have a theory but I don't want to taint anyones ideas)

Thanks

sounds like a seal to me. I'm assuming your talking about the little holes that house the clips that hold the water pump shaft.

your water pump is done for. Those are check holes. They leak when the water pump is bad. Replace the pump.

gotta put some blue silicones between the thermostat/water pump & the block.

Uhhhhh.....HEEEEEEELLLLOOOO!!!!! :aw: :aw: :aw:
if your car is overheating, then it is possible that the thermostat may NOT be the cause of the problem & simply replacing it will NOT solve your overheating problem. Water pumps, like anything else MECHANICAL in your engine bay, will go bad in due time. Water leaking out of the weep holes on the water pump is a CLEAR sign that your water pump went to that great wreaking yard in the sky!!!...kiss it goodbye & replace it...

you were in such a hurry to try and put your smartass bitchmouth reply in this thread that you didn't even read. he never said his car was overheating. chances are, you probably also think you're the cockgod of all that is waterpumps. i've never met anyone who was so sure to just know everything and somehow end up flaming a guy asking a NON-STUPID question about his thermostat swap. you try too hard ..

in spirit of dumb insults... Shift_GoFuckYourself :D

whats with all the confusion, you over-opinionated faggots?

the answer is simple, change your t-stat, change your fucking water pump and be done with. routine maintanance.

this thread is basic mechanics 101, post something more challenging please. ;)

This blows...change a thermo and I lose the water pump. It was working fine before I changed it too. Crappy water pump. I'm going to upgrade to a carbon fiber one.

I think what happened was...thermo died at the track, killed the radiator in the process. Epoxy on rad on the way home, pulled radiator, killed water pump (SOMEHOW)....replaced thermo and water pump.

Seems to all be working again now.
