View Full Version : I have $300; Spend How?

Well, I'm new to this whole having money with which to modify your car thing and I need some opinions on what I should drop $300 on. The suspension is all old, but I have some SPL coilovers on the way, so shocks and springs are taken care of.

Mainly what I'm asking is: should I buy the P2M Kazama pillowball tie rod ends/Tein tie rod combo for $250 or wait and just spend $195 on CP Racing tension rods and use the $55 I save on used tires and mounting?

Which one would offer the most bang for my buck?

Yes, I do realize I sound like a noob, but I'd really like to be ultra-sure before dropping a significant amount on parts. (It's made even more significant by the fact that I have no job.)

Subframe spacers, wheel hop sucks

You don't have to spend every dime you get, if you plan on getting both it doesnt matter whcih you get. When are your coilovers coming in? Do you plan on getting your car aligned after getting the coilovers if so, get the tie rods harder to eyeball and have a bigger effect than uneven caster.

And get TougeFactory or SPL Parts T/C Rods, cheaper and work great.

mjjstang... I have a feeling it wouldn't help you get on the road any faster.

Already have subframe spacers.

If I order the tie rods now, they'll come in before the coilovers. I'm gonna get the suspension aligned the day after I get the coilovers.

I was thinking about all the companies that carry t/c rods and for some reason I completely blanked about those two. Heh, duh.

I'll be getting a job soon enough, so I guess I'll go with the tie rod combo. Next: a real seat.

should have gottent he seat first. It will make a bigger difference. Tie Rods and T/C are good for fine tuning, but the seat will change your whole driving experience.

STOP.

Don't buy any parts.
Take your money, go to 5-6 Autocrosses or buy a helmet and hit the fucking track.

Come back, now you won't have to ask us what to spend your NEXT $300 on.

Oh yeah, I have Falken Azenis Sports already. And Axxis Ultimates. And Ate Superblue fluid. And an SSK.

I think you sat on a pineapple the wrong way, dude. I've been to four autocrosses (in my previous car) and I have a track day coming up in September. I just want the car to be sorted for the track day, and I haven't driven it hard yet because the current coilovers are SHOT and over bumps it skips like a smooth stone over smoother water.

Ok, so I really have $1k that I could spend... but almost all of that would be eaten up by a decent seat. Although... I could buy an S14 seat rather than messing with the tie rods or tension rods. Crap, and I do need a helmet...

y r u so set on buying seats? this thread is making it sound like u are obligated to spend ur money...
those who have full intention to spend will regret it in the long run. i wish i had never spent as much as i have already. but, it is your choice. seeing that you have no job, i would think u'd have something more significant to spend it on.

if you're dead set on spending, post a list of ALL ur mods. This way every1 on this forum can see how your project is progressing. that sounds easier...

All my mods:
Axxis Ultimate pads
Ate Superblue fluid
205/50 Falken Azenis Sports
KTS coilovers on order
Powertrix Subframe spacers
C's short shifter
Kyo-ei 10mm spacers
Kyokugen lug nuts (kinda wish I hadn't spent the money on 'em)
Nismo 60mm lug studs
A'pexi drop-in air filter
Silvia front end conversion
random JDM front strut brace

No bodykit, no bumpin' sound system, (12-disc cd changer in trunk, passenger side) no bling. Strictly function over form. (Ok, well, I'm painting it in my driveway with rattle cans. Is that bling?)

I want to get this stuff done before the track day. After that, I can take a little break from spending. I'm trying to make this car as friendly as possible.

I just installed the Nismo power brace and SPL tension rods that I ordered from them. I'm getting an alignment next week, but even without it it's awesome. I'm waiting to get my alignment to do a write-up and review but so far I would highly recommend them. The power brace improved turn-in a LOT and the steering feel is a little tighter, more like my gf's Mazda Protege. Also, over less than perfect roads the front end feels like it's stiffer (the chassis not the suspension). I'd get them from SPL, where I ordered from, Alan and Kuah are very helpfull and their turnaround on orders if fast. :D

do the tc rods really make that big of a difference? or that combined with the power brace? this is just a random inquiry..i know i could search but im lazy.

anyway...I have to go with the guy above who said a seat makes a huge difference. I've heard of far too many people say that it's made such a drastic change in terms of feel. Think about it...if you're moving around in the car how are you expected to control the car yourself? something to think about...along with $1k + ...lol

go bride!!

I'm pretty sure most of it was the power brace. I can feel the road (bumps and stuff) through the floor a little more. I like the tension rods cause later down the road when I'll need the adjustability it'll be there and the spherical bearings are nice. The two together made a big difference. I guess I could to a comparison and put the stock tension rods back, if it would be of interest to people here I'll do it. If not I have no reason to and I'd rather just enjoy it the way it is. :D

Ya know...for a guy that has over 200 posts, you should at LEAST have had enough sense to post this message FIRST than your previous messages. All these mods you listed would have given EVERYONE a clear idea of what you had & you would have gotten better responses than the ones you initially received....

You said you sounded like a NOOB in your original post....sounds like you still are judging from your initial post!!! This one makes a hell of a lot more sense & would have gotten you your answer a lot quicker than the initial post.

where's kevin when you need 'em!!! hahahahahaha

All the responses I received were received well. I thank everyone for contributing, and I think I'm just going to spend the money on gas and practice tires. If I come across a good deal on a good seat (FIA-approved, of course) or a VLSD, I'll probably buy it... but for now, I'll stave off the want to spend all the money.

haha diego man, no one is used to his shit talking.. thats just the way he is.

well anyway, if you ask me.. i think you should make sure your car is maintained well. fix whatever is broken, upgrade if you think the part you are buying is INDEED an upgrade.

from there on, just drive your damn car and you'll start to get a feel for the items that NEED improvement (or that YOU want to improve on).

i think the best money i ever spent was on sway bars, but that was years years years ago. since then, i lost my tab and just stripped my car. oh welllll

Don't buy an S14 seat, unless you plan on upgrading it sooner or later. Your best bet is find the perfect sized seat. I highly recommend bucket seats, but I realize some people think its overkill (even though I think its not). But you will thing S14 seats are crap once you sit in a bucket seat that perfectly fits you.

Most will say buy a Brix but don't unless you have sat in one and it perfectly fit you. Especially since the ones we get are all stupid fat. The right seat makes a huge difference IMO, makes you feel like you are welded to the car.
