So I swapped everything over to stock stuff. Stock e6 ecu, stock injectors, and stock maf (22680 52F01). So I pulled valve cover off and double checked the timing. The black links matched the dimples on each cam gear and I lined it up on the second to the mark on the crank pulley. I believe it's 15 degrees. I pulled out the cas lined it up on the dot on the right pushed it in and the second dot lined up. Well when I started it it runs up to 2k then idles at 1000+/- 150 rpm. But I've had times where I give it has and it drops to like 500 or less until I give it gas again. I bought a timing gun to make sure it was timed right and it was. So I'm confused as to why it's running so rough. It's got bc 264 cams on both intake and exhaust and it's got stock cam gears. Should it have adjustable? Please help

We read in the united states of America from left to right. So the second mark on the crank is zero. Aka tdc as long as the cam lobes for #1cyl are pointing outwards. Piston 1 should be top dead center. That the position we install the chain, and cas. I think you got that correct.
After you start the car, let it warm up. You can hold the rpm at 2000 to help it warm up faster, otherwise let it idle until 80°c/176°f. set the engine into timing mode. If you have consult port wired up? Use a program to lock the ecu into timing mode. If not, disconnect the tps, rev the engine to 3krpm 3x. Shoot the crank, the mark you want is the 15° mark second from the right or -5 0 5 10 [15] 20
Rotate the cas to achieve this. After that adjust idle to 850rpm + or - 50rpm. Then shoot the crank again. Still 15°? Rev the engine 3x to 3krpm shut car down plug in tps start engine.
If not still 15°when you check again, adjust cas. Rev 3krpm 3x and blah blah blah.
With a consult program you don't have to rev the engine, just take the ecu out of timing mode, shut it down, restart to make sure the settings took hold.
Remember some people have issues with the coil pack loop, so have a spark plug wire handy and you can spend the time figuring out if either way is different for you.

Another way that I use, as per CodyACE
Quote:
In regard to the mechanical timing, there is only one way to do it right, and zero way for it be off a hair. Set it up per FSM, and then once you stab the cas just verify it lines up correctly or close. 9/10 it's always within 2 degrees either way (adding aftermarket cams sometimes changes it) so then you take a timing light and turn the cas to make sure it's right.
Cheap/Easy way to check timing (although takes some common sense):
Hold timing light on crank, rev motor by hand (throttle body pulley) to like 3 or 4 k. You'll see the timing 'mark' move all around but then just before the engine returns to idle it'll stabilize. When it does this, you'll want to turn the CAS until the 2nd mark from the left (yes the left, this test involves you using 0*) with the mark. Rev it up again and again and watch as it comes back down idle and you'll see it verify the mark with the 2nd mark from the left.
This can be done without the engine in timing mode, or TPS unplugged or any of that, but it uses the 0* mark instead of the 15* mark that you'd use in the traditional way.
Remember timing marks (from left to right) +5 0 5 10 15 20
Hope this helps, credit to CodyACE

Here is how I do it,
1. Set piston #1 TDC. Double check this if you are new.
2. Now set the lobes facing outwards on cylinder number 1.
note: Since the timing tensioner is out, there is some slack in the chain. If the slack falls between the gears, then remove the slack by turning the gears away from each other so that the lobes are facing outwards.
3. Once the lobes are facing out, and piston #1 tdc, you are set. Just double check the number of links between dots, (you know how many goes between the dots right?) And lock the cams down by following FSM torque procedure.

Ok so probably beating this post to death but here goes. So I set the timing just like I was suppose to unplugged the tps and reved it 3x but I can't keep the engine running long enough to get it set to 15 degrees. It runs like crap. Stumbling and hesitating. Any ideas?

Once the engine starts you can turn the cas by hand slowly to keep the engine running. If it doesnt run long enough in any position then it needs tuning more than timing (or other problem).
