View Full Version : Why does my A/C motor fan only work when it wants to?

I recently purchased a 1996 S14, its completely stock. When I bought the car the A/C did not work. I researched and found that my resistor was most likely bad (I only had fan level 4). I replaced the resistor with an OEM unit and the A/C worked perfectly for about a week, and then it started acting up again.

Problem: Suddenly the blower motor fan (under the dash) only wants to work when it "feels" like it. Meaning on day I can have A/C and the next day I may not.Thats basically what happens. It's very confusing and a bit frustrating. I live in Florida and would like to have A/C.
My A/C compressor works and everything, there just isn't any air coming out of the vents.

are you talking about the blower motor or the electric fan near the radiator and condensor?

Sorry, I am talking about the blower motor in the cabin of the car.

the only thing i can tell you so you save money is when its not working unplug it and see if your getting power AND ground at the plug. if you arent then its your blower motor.

Thanks! I will look into that tomorrow. I am beginning to think its the blower motor.

I think its the blower motor, which is starting to go out. I would look into that. I read that it can land on a certain part of the blower motor and that explains why sometimes the AC blower works and sometimes it doesn't. Good luck.

Usually when the blower motor goes it starts pulling a lot of amps. First killing the resister then itself.

Check the fuses first then the connections. Your hypothesis about the the motor sticking in certain positions is probably spot on. But, make sure it's not just a wonky connection.

Will look into that, my resistor did die, and I bought a new one. So I am really thinking its the blower motor now.
