So I'll give you all a brief "hello and intro" to my car and I,
My name is Hanz, and I'm from the wonderful state of Florida where drugs are smuggled and old people come to die, always seemed to be a weird combo to me, anyways! I got my s13 after a 2 year journey in 2014 and since then have personally gone through 2 SR's and plenty of other costly experiences, however, I wouldn't have it any other way, I love my car and it hates me<3
on to the cool stuff! This is my 240sx. It's an 89 SOHC car that I purchased from my neighbor with a blown up SR in the hatch:)
Day I got it,

When it was running last,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/61CEFF8D-B48E-402E-A830-957B1346C77F_zpspqnsqhq6.png (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/61CEFF8D-B48E-402E-A830-957B1346C77F_zpspqnsqhq6.png.html)
And what it looks like today, (quite sad)
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/20CC94BE-E73C-4143-8232-535B077BA897_zpswovhnvlq.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/20CC94BE-E73C-4143-8232-535B077BA897_zpswovhnvlq.jpg.html)
So to make some very long sad stories short, I rebuilt the SR the first time around and it lasted all of 30 minutes and had a tasty rod knock. I didnt double check my machine work and it was a hard lesson learned, then I rebuilt the motor the second time around and went all out, I used ACL race bearings, hot tanked everything, and spent too much money at a machine shop and the result was a healthy SR that i thrashed daily and lasted almost a year until I was racing a new SS camaro on my way home the mall. We took off from a traffic light and I was about 2 cars out in the top of 4th gear, then BANG, and then that instant oh shit moment, followed by :picardfp:.
This was the sad result, after waiting 2 hours in the middle of the road in the Florida heat,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/D66BC914-B35D-4A32-8BA5-006303D91207_zpstktuomlp.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/D66BC914-B35D-4A32-8BA5-006303D91207_zpstktuomlp.jpg.html)
But the tow truck driver actually ended up knowing all about 240's and even had plenty of his own trauma stories about his own, so that was a plus!
Anyways the car sat in my driveway for a month or two, then in my back yard for a few days, and then I finally grew a pair and decided to fix my baby. I pulled it in front of my shop and started stripping it down to pull the motor, my friend Tucker stopped by to help speed the process along and provide some helpful hands ( most of my friends are pretty usless car-wise, however, Tucker owns 2 S13's one LS1 sil80, and a rad SR hatch) anyways here's the few pics I snapped along the way,

And now the sad ones haha,

Well I had known that I had a rod go through my block, but I didn't know why, I knew I was making mid 300's so a snapped rod wasn't too crazy of an idea, but I also had a theory that it simply oil starved, sadly the latter was indeed the issue. I was stupidly running a stock pan and pick up on a lowered car and payed the price for it. After tearing down the block I found that my pick up hadn't broken off, but it definitely had kissed the pan a few times leaving some marks. This plus the heavy acceleration from racing the camaro was a ticking time bomb literally haha.
I don't have any tear down pictures, but the motor was filled with bearing and rod, I have already purchased a new block, trans, starter (mine had a rod in it), lightweight flywheel (ACT I believe), new bearings (rods & mains), crank, and some power steering pieces, all for $100! My neighbor who sold me my car is pretty desperate to get rid of his SR parts to fund his WRX haha.
So as the car sits now, is motorless, waiting on the machine shop to call and ask me to bring my piggy bank, and I've been doing some various odds and ends that I should've done the first few builds.
Pictures of this weeks work,
I made a floor to cover my old spare well so it looked more "finished". Still needs carpet and a newer smaller sub box, and yes I have the side covers and they do cover the edges of the wood.

Today I had the urge to actually attempt to properly tuck my harness and re wrap my harness as well.
Stripping the harness

The wires I removed, basically anything I've never plugged in or seen a use for

Where the fusebox wires "tuck" at, they will be wrapped and waterproofed of course, and yes in this location the fender still bolts on no problem. I'm also going to trace "useless" wires back to their source and depin them.

And finally the finished mess of 25 year old tape and plastic

So small update but I had some time to work on the car and decided to start shaving the bay to prepare it for paint!
Used my trusty Snap-On 140 amp MIG, and tried to weld the shittiest metal in the world (blew through almost every weld)

Example of holes that actually turned out nicely

Then I started grinding and very quickly decided to stop because my electric grinder wouldn't let go of a cutting disc to change it to a grinding disc, so long story short the few I did grind where done with very loud small air grinder and my ears are still ringing

Once I couldn't hear anymore I decided I should go to Orileys and spend more money I dont have and picked up some wiring goodies, some winkle paint for my intercooloer set up (pictures coming soon), and a piece I've always wanted, a battery interrupter switch. I needed to modify my battery cable anyways with the new tuck and I've always loved the anti-theft and ease of working benefits that come with these. (Also feeds my inner ricer)

You've got an interesting story behind your car, and that's awesome! Keep up the good work.
My brother and I are both 19 and we are building out s13 from the ground up, and struggling with the finances for it as well haha, so we've got a good idea what its like. Check out our build thread sometime.

Not much of an update, I didn't get to work on the car today. I've been super busy with graduation, but I did get to finish my new intercooler piping! I hated how shitty the old polished aluminium looked so I went with a wrinkle black to cover most of the imperfections.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/D8B561A2-19E6-4550-AD61-1D554CECCBB5_zpsxubrsugx.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/D8B561A2-19E6-4550-AD61-1D554CECCBB5_zpsxubrsugx.jpg.html)

All I did to prep them was a quick sand down with some 320-grit and then cleaned them off, gives a nice classy oem+ look!

So another small update since I haven't been doing much on the car, I've got a pretty solid idea of an engine bay color scheme after I was putting my intercooler piping back together and saw how bad ass anodized purple looks with wrinkle black,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/BB103E92-3414-4D5A-B78B-6E17BD099C4E_zpsyscxcja0.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/BB103E92-3414-4D5A-B78B-6E17BD099C4E_zpsyscxcja0.jpg.html)
So what I have in mind is winkle black on things like the rocker cover and piping and other small accessories, then with touches of silver and purple. I'd love some opinions on the engine bay color though! I had silver in mind but I'm not sure...
I'd also like to include a picture of a car I found on instagram that's influenced my tear down,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/Mobile%20Uploads/13CEE8F0-72AA-47A9-8D95-55E5D3F6F014_zpsdp1xopxu.png (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/Mobile%20Uploads/13CEE8F0-72AA-47A9-8D95-55E5D3F6F014_zpsdp1xopxu.png.html)
I don't plan on running any crazy areo, mainly because I don't like putting my bumper back on every few days and I personally think a nicley done bash bar with stock areo on some dishy wheels looks amazingly simple. I'm also taking opinions on the exterior color of the car!!! I have a full paint shop so any color is possible for me!:naughty:
Anyways that's all for now!

Good updates, small or not! I debated the exterior color for awhile on mine, but I think I'm I'm going to go with bright blue on my S13, but it really depends on your goal. Do you want it to be flashy or conservative?

It changes day by day honestly, I'd love to stand out, but already get pulled over often now, but at this point if I'm gonna be different I might as well go all out:rolleyes:

Actually I've never been ticketed, have a clean driving record, and even have a Florida "safe driver" license. When I get pulled over it's always been because my car's too loud, or it's been late at night for "suspicious activity". Then there was the one-off time that I got pulled over for not having a bumper cover, something that is perfectly legal in Florida's codes that I pointed out to the officer and he ended up telling me that it was his bad and to have a nice day. I have a long history at race tracks, I grew up racing karts, my dad drags, and my mom even used to whip karts. I've road raced and dragged myself too, I actually haven't even gone to a drift event or drifted my car. So please before you go forum hopping making assumptions, ask.

I'm 18 as well, and I'm so glad you said this. I've never received a ticket and have never been in an accident of any sort. The only time I was pulled over was because the license plate light was burnt out, so it was a courtesy stop. Teenagers do not equate to bad drivers at all. In fact, it's those in their 30s and 40s who scare me the most on the road, but it could really be anyone.
As for the paint color, look up some pictures and decide what you like! Think of a color scheme, not just one color. 240s look great in nearly any color :)

Well, you DID say you were racing a SS camaro and your engine blew at the top of 4th gear..which is about 122mph assuming you were at redline with stock trans, final drive ratio and 195/60r15-ish tires LOL
Most of us are guilty of "spirited driving" from time to time - I know I am just be safe out there and keep it on the track :2f2f:

Oh I definitely do agree with being guilty of the occasional spirited driving, I just didn't appreciate the harsh sterotype, that I try my best to stay away from as well as being the typical "240 kid". And I wouldn't say 120's I'd say it was closer to 90's working my way to the top haha. It was honestly even lower than that considering the engine failure that was rapidly occurring. But anyways, still not behavior that should be considered okay, I appreciate you for not just throwing a label on me entire being.

So small update guys!
I've put off my engine build due to a financial status change for the better and will also be traveling to New Orleans for a job opportunity this summer, however I have been working here and there on small parts of the car just to pass time until I can work on the engine.
Anyways today, I decided to do what I thought would be an easy job, replacing rear break rotors! Well in theory it was a super easy job, but due to nobody giving a single fuck about this car for 20 odd years, the stock rotor had seized onto the hubs/studs, and needed a little "persuading". I tried a rubber mallet, then a bigger one, then a metal hammer, and then I got pissed off and got out a 15lb slide hammer and stopped giving a fuck.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/A4A09B3D-3790-4A27-9923-6DB771F459C5_zpshnn4phnb.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/A4A09B3D-3790-4A27-9923-6DB771F459C5_zpshnn4phnb.jpg.html)
The rotors were super worn, grooved, rusted, etc. The passenger side was also warped.
Old v new

And here's some pictures of what happens when you cheap out on break pads, these pads got used under 500 miles and were already extremely worn and coming apart, the car also never stopped that great.

Anyways besides the rotors giving me trouble, I also found the dust boots for the caliper pistons had torn, so I'll be tracing down those and if you could give me a part # I'd greatly appreciate it!
Also since I never really included it, this is the color of the car currently, its a galaxy grey with red and green flake, a cool color, but not one I like, I only chose it because it roughly matched the jams and I was in a financial bind finishing the car the first time round and I had plenty of this left over from a customer job.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/49582A73-0A47-4C08-A768-3FC9C3A59CC5_zpsvqupnbwj.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/49582A73-0A47-4C08-A768-3FC9C3A59CC5_zpsvqupnbwj.jpg.html)
Speaking of color, I've finally decided on a color scheme for the car, I've decided that in the engine bay I'm going to go for a silver color and the engine will have bits of wrinkle black and anodized purple, and as for the outside I was watching some Tuercked videos and specifically the ones featuring his "street" S13 and I've always loved the look of a clean black car with some dishy wheels so I'm leaning toward a nice gloss black with some kind of five spoke wheel with a deep dish. The car will also be getting some over fenders depending on the wheels I pick!
Thanks for reading guys!

So not much has happened with the car in a while due to me working and traveling, I do have a pretty solid build plan for the car at this point though including,
Built SR to handle 500+
.020 over bore
Wiseco Pistons (stock compression)
Eagle rods
Tomei HG
ISIS gasket kit
ISIS V2 oil pan (steel plate is stronger than V1)
ARP head studs
ACL bearings throughout
S14 oil pickup
Tomei 260 poncams
BC springs & retainers
DOC race top mount T3 mani (My ISIS top mount was garbage)
Tial MVS wastegate
Spec stage 3 clutch
750+cc injectors
Z32 MAF
And I'm currently trying to decide between full stand alone or a Enthalpy ECU (input on this is very welcomed)
That's the basic parts list as it stands right now, and the build should start in mid august. I've been talking with Sam at Enjuku and I've decided to source all my parts from them since they're my local shop and have always happily helped me from my own cars to customer cars and I would always recommend them.
Now on to some cool stuff! Currently I've been starting to do more work in my desired profession which is film, I'm intending on going to Full-Sail sometime in the winter and I've started building my portfolio, first project of many to come is this edit I made at a drag strip in Lakeland FL.
NWMQ_6hraoY
I hope that embedded properly haha, anyways it was a test n' tune night and the first volkswagen to lay down a 6 second 1/8th mile pass walked out with $100. MY dad has raced volkswagens his whole life and currently has a promod car sitting in our shop, recently we've been pit crewing for a friend of my dad's, Noel Latour who's recently put together a 5 second promod VW featured in the video above, anyways I'm not sure if you guys are into this sort of thing or want this in my build thread but I figure I should explain what I've been up to in absence of building my 240 and tell everyone a little about me and what I do, sorry for this being a kinda boring wordy post and thanks for reading, fun stuff coming in August!

LAZARUS EFFECT ENGAGED!
So long time no see guys! To make a much too long story much shorter we'll make some bullet points,
-Moved to New Orleans left car in FL
-Moved back
-Bought another financial mistake
-Got a job that fueled my bad spending habits
-Got some race car shit done for once
-Possibly getting a better much more awesome job tomorrow??? 2/24/16
-And now, Progress!!!!
First of all, my new financial mistake,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0107_zpsvrkwu8jh.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0107_zpsvrkwu8jh.jpg.html)

It's a 2001 330ci that has all the leaks all the time! Also the turn signals just fall out and it had a bad date with a guard rail on a rainy night's drive home. Behind it you can see my old daily a Volkswagen, lots of good memories in that car and it's also being rebuilt atm.
Now, let me preface the next few images saying some things. I'm now 19, I pay for everything on my own working 40+ hours a week and I have no shop affiliations or sponsorships to help me. I have some good friends and supportive family.
now PICTURES!!!!
I went to a place,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0814_zpsjvmw29xt.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0814_zpsjvmw29xt.jpg.html)
I saw some cars
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0792_zpsi7kyeyby.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0792_zpsi7kyeyby.jpg.html)

And finally, bought some parts! (not all pictured)
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0836_zps5tiydjiz.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0836_zps5tiydjiz.jpg.html)
I basically went to Enjuku on one of my few days off because I got tired of looking at my bare block sitting in bedroom and decided that I'd finally do something about it. I got there and stated talking to Gregg who is a great down to earth guy who let me tour the shop and take plenty of pictures like the idiot I am. At the end of the day I left with all the parts I needed for my basic short block and some extras,
-Manley Rods
-Wiseco 86.50mm 9:1 pistons
-ACL Race bearings
-ARP Head Studs
-Tomei Head Gasket
-Z32 MAF
-Wiring Specialties Harness
-S14 Oil Pick Up
-Megan Racing Mounts
-And that's about it
So I went ahead and assembled the motor myself, and by assemble I mean painstakingly balance and blueprint my entire engine documenting as I went to leave no room for errors and surprises down the road.
SR porn incoming
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0830_zps29v7i8gm.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0830_zps29v7i8gm.jpg.html)

So with the short block assembled I decided to think about my head, and thought why build a race block and not a race head? The result was a full port and polish along with boring out the combustion chambers. I have a set of BC springs and retainers and some Tomei 270's coming in the mail and will be doing a dual guide conversion with all new OEM guides.
Everyone loves good head right???

And well that's about all folks, I'll be updating a bit more frequently due to my new job and also because my build is in full swing at the moment. As soon as my head supplies come in the mail I'll be building the head and posting up some pictures of that!

I have already purchased a new block, trans, starter (mine had a rod in it), lightweight flywheel (ACT I believe), new bearings (rods & mains), crank, and some power steering pieces, all for $100! My neighbor who sold me my car is pretty desperate to get rid of his SR parts to fund his WRX haha.Jesus Christ. There's desperate and there's "these parts are hotter then a blood stained rape van" desperate.
Ridiculous deal if legit though. Keep on the good work.

BIG UPDATE
Well for me at least, but it does involve all S-chassis owners!
You may have seen that Mazworx was hiring if you follow them on Instagram, well I did at least. I saw their photo as I was pulling an all nighter from the shitty hours I got at my previous job (Ruths Chris) and immediately typed up a new resume at 5am and sent it to Mark as fast as I could, and a few days later I got called in for an interview I never thought I'd get and as of today I'm a Mazworx employee and it's surreal saying that. I can't thank Mark or Manuel enough for this opportunity.
Anyways if you guys need anything I'll be working sales with Manuel starting tomrrow!

Okay guys so another small update!
I finally got most of the parts together to start building my head and decided to take some progress pictures.
First off thanks to Bryan at work for letting me hot tank my head for free!
So if any of you haven't installed springs and retainers it's fairly simple. Just get some thick grease I used X-tra from Lucas and put it on the valve where the keepers sit and also grease the inside of the keepers so they don't just fall all over the place, then compress the retainer and either use your finger or a scribe tool to push the keepers in place. Slow and steady will win the race here, if you try to rush you'll get frustrated and take twice as long.
If you've never done this before and want a really good detailed write up on the full process look here! http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/how-to-build-a-9000-rpm-sr20det-head.html

And finally my cams came in! Tomei hydraulic Procam 270's
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_11951_zpszx5g5ne4.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_11951_zpszx5g5ne4.jpg.html)
I'll be able to finish the head by next week hopefully, I'm waiting on a pair of keepers because I lost some and I also need to get new guides for the rocker arms so I can convert them to dual guide for reliability on any kind of two-step.
Anyways that's all guys!
hanzbrady
03-16-2016, 09:19 PM
So I finally finished my dual guide conversion and figured I'd share the progress, I'm sorry it's not much but a speeding ticket has cut into this months budget haha.
Anyways, glamour shots!
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_12741_zpsfn89tard.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_12741_zpsfn89tard.jpg.html)
Here's the guides installed, I used a mix of my used guides, new OEM, and some slightly ground ones to get them all to match up. For those of you who don't know all the OEM guides are 3mm thick, but you need to compensate for the difference in valve stem length so that your rocker arm can sit level. all of the guides in your head don't need to be the same height, but the two guides per rocker need to be, if that makes sense. So cylinder 1 doesn't need to match cylinder 2, but you need to make sure that the guides you have in cylinder 1 are level so that your rocker makes full contact with your camshaft, the hydraulic lifters will take care of the height difference as long as all rockers are level. Wow I feel like that was over explained, hmm it's late so it's staying that way.
Now to measure your guides you'll need a tool that can measure your valve stem height. I know that there's better tools available, and that you can make one out of an extra lifter but here's what I came up with. It's a socket I drilled out to accept a dial gauge that extends out of the bottom of the socket. You use this tool by resting the end of the socket on your retainer and this gives you your guide height per spring. Again, probably not a good explanation but I have pictures!
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1275_zpsufwps8ls.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1275_zpsufwps8ls.jpg.html)

And here is it in use,
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1280_zpsbzsfehxx.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1280_zpsbzsfehxx.jpg.html)
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1278_zpsumeevzzy.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1278_zpsumeevzzy.jpg.html)

You want this gauge to read as close as possible on both guides, and there's no real science to it besides trying all the shims you have haha
And here are my rockers that I ground using a bench grinder
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1281_zpshfdsusx3.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_1281_zpshfdsusx3.jpg.html)
Ground side

OEM side
Well that's all for now guys, I'll be bleeding my lifters tomorrow and then I'll have my head complete, then I'll just need to grab a timing kit and a few oil galley plugs for my block, then hopefully I'll finally have a full long block!
Thanks for reading!

So I apologize in advance for the cell phone pics, but I forgot to take some with my DLSR along the way.
Anyways I had my girlfriend come over last night and keep me company while I worked away on the block, I got the head installed and the timing set. The motor thankfully turned over easily and no guides shot out at me. My rockers are all also wearing evenly on to my camshafts. Now I just need to clean the outside of my front cover because it looks horrible and install my timing tensioner then the rotating bits will be finished and I can seal everything up.
Also since I'm sure people will assume I just threw my old used pump back in, I didn't. I fully disassembled it and cleaned it with carb cleaner, I reassembled all of the bits making sure to pack it with a low temp grease and I also shimmed my pump by 2mm since this is a "loose" motor. I really wish I could've gotten the outside clean before installing it but you know how it is when you decide to start working on things before you realize that you don't own degreaser and brushes right? The front cover also got a new front main seal, mine never leaked, but its one of those "While you're in there" parts.
And now bad quality phone pictures!

I put the manifold on to check block clearance and this thing is big, is has long equal length runners so it'll spool a little slower, but also make a bit more torque, I'm not sure how this will work, but I'll give a more detailed review of it when I actually have the car driving.

Well it seems that I update this about weekly now, so this week I got my hands on some cool things and tidied up some loose ends on the block.
Firstly I bought some 1000cc Precision injectors and managed to find a fuel rail that actually fit these things which was quite annoying due to them being 11mm injectors, the fuel rail I ended up going with was a JWT rail that I scored for $75 sweet!!!
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0091_zpsbvgnk1ml.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0091_zpsbvgnk1ml.jpg.html)
I still need to sort out the feed and return fittings and hope that my block off plate for the stock FPR doesn't leak but that'll be for a later date.
I also cleaned up my heater hoses the right way by cutting them and welding up the extra nipples for things like the throttle body and IACV because I wont be using those, also if you want some cheap 180* heater hose bends a 96 v6 Mustang has 2 of them!
And lastly a full resolution picture of my assembled long block! (yes it does fit throught the door... barely.)
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0093_zpsqkmapfnh.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_0093_zpsqkmapfnh.jpg.html)
I'm sorry the pictures are a bit grainy but the lighting in my room is far from ideal so I have to crank the ISO up.

Are you assembling an engine in your bedroom? And is that a sharpie checklist on the wall?
Props on the quality parts though, this is quite the build :)

Well there's no AC in the garage... haha.
Yeah, it's kinda how I've always done it because it's just comfortable and keeps me and my dads stuff separate to avoid any drama, and about the list, I'm a super forgetful and artistic person, one of m walls is a chalkboard and it's filled.
And thank you for acknowledging that I'm actually putting some effort in!

Woah hey these aren't engine pictures!
So I ran out of cool go fast stuff to play with and saw my poor shell in my back yard in need of some love, so I started ripping it apart
My dash has seen better days, my AC has never worked, and 95% of the dash buttons don't do anything so why not just throw it all away? The dash was easy enough to get out due to half of the bolts missing, and sanding it wasn't bad either, just messy and of course like an idiot I did it in my bedroom.

Tomorrow I'll try to bondo the cracks up if my girlfriend allows me to being that it's her birthday weekend haha. hopefully sometime soon I'll actually get around to flocking it.

I thought I may have to, for the most part though I got the sharp edges all knocked down by hand with some 80 grit.

Well I decided it would be a brilliant idea to not bring my camera home from work so you guys are stuck with more Iphone camera updates and I'm sorry!
Anyways I finally pulled all of the HVAC stuff from my dash and got the chassis harness out of the car so that I could gut it and get the necessities out.

Doing this with the windsheild and seats in the car is a bit of a chore, but doable.
I also started bondoing my dash for its upcoming flocking appointment, hopefully I'm capable of not screwing that up haha.

Well, once upon a time I owned a relatively stock 240sx with a mild SR20det, then I started going full race car... don't ever go full race car...
So my friend Tony came by and let me completely gut my car and decide to run all of my own custom wiring, now I'm not mad about this at all, and I've only been writing in this tone because I get bored and writing things in a story format is at least 3.789% cooler than usual.
So the bullet points are as follows
-Interior went bye bye
-The stupidly heavy factory wiring went bye bye
-And my snazzy dash finally got installed! (I'm actually not too proud of this, I should have gotten the bigger flocking kit for sure because I ran out of fibers and there's some dry spots.)
And as always pictures!

And eventually I have to finish this, I broke my MIG's gas solenoid and have just been putting off spending the money for a new welder, but the plans are to shave the holes and go with that glossy almost primer Scion grey color for the bay.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/IMG_02841_zpstjbxcv8u.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/IMG_02841_zpstjbxcv8u.jpg.html)
Well that's all for now, the next steps are going to be wiring, I sold my OEM Wiring Specialties harness to fund purchasing their universal one, then I also need to grab some kind of switch panel to control everything, I was thinking the ARC one, but it's still TBD. I want the wiring on this version of the build to be as simple and race-inspired as possible so that I can spend more time enjoying my car and driving it.
Thanks for reading guys!

I should've posted another photo of that sanded now that I think about it lol. That's also no bondo, its filler with fiberglass in it for the extra heat resistance. Anyways long story short 98% of it was sanded back and only the low spots remained and the was skimmed with putty to smooth it out. I'm not too worried about the cracking seeing how the car wont see the sun often.

Well I didn't get much done on the car this week, mostly it's just a financial issue and I'm trying to save up the last bit I need to finish the car.
However I did snap one interior picture while my girlfriend was helping me run new wires for my lights and accessories. Finding a girl that doesn't mind working on your car with you is probably one of the best feelings ever tbh.

It's slowly coming back together piece by piece, The mismatched gauges bother me just as much as everyone else, and Broadfield wouldn't be proud of my tach install, but in time I'll build a nice all in one cluster with a spare body I have.
End 240 stuff, on to Saturday
MY co worker Manuel finally got his Mustang back together after going through a bit of a shit show with a tranny swap and we went to the IHRA bracket event we had at OSW. After just a few passes the brand new tranny started leaking fluid and we had to make a make shift diaper to hold everything in, it's amazing that you can go 10's with a car held together with shop rags and duct tape.
Anyways I took some glamour shots!

Unfortunately we ran too fast in the second round due to the new converter slipping causing the car to not engine break and rather act like you push a clutch in, not slowing it down.
Now on to mothers day, I made my mom and my girlfriend some roses out of some scrap sheet metal I had laying around because I was bored and wanted to get some TIG practice in since I'll be doing a lot for my car.

Mini update!
So these passed few weeks I've been working solely on the chassis and mostly the engine bay in particular, It used to be beat up, scratched, rusted, have some janky ass holes punched out for intercooler piping, and a lot of other hack job BS that I didn't want to sit a new engine in to.
So let's start with a before picture
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/042931F0-EBC2-49B3-8FF6-A897AF0B11B5_zps8rfitfjv.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/042931F0-EBC2-49B3-8FF6-A897AF0B11B5_zps8rfitfjv.jpg.html)
I planned on shaving my bay as stated in the beginning of the thread but never finished due to my MIG breaking but I ended up repairing it so I finally got around to finishing up filling of all the useless holes, I also made some patch pieces for where the IC piping and battery tray used to sit and zapped them in.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/83E695FB-C1DF-4DC4-8C81-33F1D4CF2D9B_zpsi50aphyg.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/83E695FB-C1DF-4DC4-8C81-33F1D4CF2D9B_zpsi50aphyg.jpg.html)
My factory radiator support also went bye bye and I'll be fabbing up something removable and simple to take its place. Here's some in process mock up pictures, you can also see where I started to use some short strand filler to smooth everything out, bondo is coming today!

Well after a pay raise at work I've found some motivation to finally pull the trigger on some hotboi paint! I finished the high build primer today, and tomorrow the bay will be sprayed in a candy purple. Hopefully I can get everything done by tomorrow because after that it's going to rain for about a week straight (I hate Florida) .
The exterior will eventually be Scion IH5 grey, but that'll be after the car is running. Sorry for this being kind of a slow build, this is just my 3rd time building the car and I'd like it to be done right.
Anyways pictures!

And here's just some quick throw back pictures that I found laying in my photobucket that I'd like to share. I may have only had my car since I was 17, (I'm 19 currently) but I feel like it's really come a long way.
Excuse the mess and quality of these, they're from the day I got my car and my excitement came before my quality control lol. For anyone who didnt know I got my car as a shell with a bucket filled with 95% of an SR swap and built it myself over the summer before my senior year. It may be corny to say but this car really means a lot to me and owning it has helped me grow as a person and made me into the individual I am today.

Well. NEVER trust your local weather forecast, 10% chance of rain my ass. :picardfp:
I managed to get the bay sprayed and cleared then a fucking torrential downpour set in and even snapped the pop up tent I had set up around my car. So basically I have sand everything back down, re-prime, and re-shoot.
This is the only picture I got (Just base no clear)

Just found your thread and the amount of similarity between our cars and situation is crazy! Bought my 240 when I was 18 last year, turned 19 in January this year. Also live in south fl by fort lauderdale so a bit away from you. Drove my hatch everyday to school and work after sitting for months replacing things and redoing stuff from last owner. One day motor started knocking from driving home from work on a miss. Bent two rods and now im almost done piecing everything together.
Im ka-t with will all the internals goodies wiseco, manley, arp etc welded my holes and did a sorta a shave on the bay that finished paint today. This weekend is our monthlyish south fl meet so I dont think ill get everything together in less than 4 days with working two jobs. Maybe next week drop the motor in. Nice to see another local teenager doing the same thing with hopeless 240s

Sorry to thread jack but had to comment :) fully agree with you on the sentimental value of the car. Spent and learned a lot doing this and has shaped me more than I like to admit. BUT after this I think im done with a lot of mods, spent a lot of money and will probably buy a daily end of the year then have this has a weekend car. My biggest fear is some asshole driving and wrecking my front end or my perfect rear panels.

Not a problem man, I don't mind the photos or comments haha, its cool to see the interaction. And props on having a mindset of restoring the car and building it proper! Maybe I'll make it so some south Florida events when my cars done and we'll meet up!

Well I haven't updated this in a minute but I'm still working on the car. I've had an insane amount of events to attend lately from work to my personal life and I've been trying to fit time for the car in to all of it.
Anyways, I've almost completed wet sanding all of the water spots out of my bay, I also decided to buy some Z32 brakes and a roll bar while I was finding stuff to spend money on since I can only sand for so many hours a day.
I also managed to break a toe working on the car yesterday so that's halting progress a bit, but the roll bar will be in this weekend broken toe or not haha.

Well turns out using a foot pedal with a broken toe is a bit hard, so that'll have to wait a few days which I'm not too happy about since I'm trying to get my car done before FL2K.
None the less, I still got some work done, I rebuilt my Z32 calipers. I'm still deciding if I want to paint the letters silver or not, I kind of have a thing for the flat black on its own.
So hopefully I can get my bay re-sprayed this week, once that's done all I really need to do is start putting the car back together, I've run out of things to buy for now.

But suffer the same issues as any old Nissan engine, if it's not a VR38 nothing is in stock.
The SR for example has no VVL cams and very few det available at the moment OEM or aftermarket, Manley is backordered on rods, virgin cores are borderline impossible to source, rockers come in sets of 2 every couple of weeks from Nissan, I could go on and on as a guy who spends 40 hours a week advising builds and helping customers source parts I can confidently say that building a 80-90's Nissan engine is one of the biggest headaches you could currently ask for, hence why I'd move on to a Toyota or GM platform as they have a much larger aftermarket with more competing businesses influencing production.

Does Nissan attempt to keep up with the demand for parts for the SR20 due to hordes of drifters and other builders beating them down? Or do they just treat it any other platform in regards to production of parts vs. number of motors produced? I could only imagine the demand for SR parts is 100 fold vs. VG parts. Not to mention the VG's abysmal aftermarket compared to the SR.
Anyways, this is where GM will always dominate the swap debate. Half of Americans live within several miles of a store that stocks enough LS galore. Very convenient.

knowing Nissan though you can repurpose other parts for newer engines to work with the older ones. Its just a thought I know the VG makes alot of power on the stock bottom end. so you dont need to run cams for extra oomph. really the power in most engines is in fabbed stuff with proper measurements right? good head flow and custom turbo set up and they'll spool hard

But why put all the time and money into a dying platform that's already tired when you could take that 5-6k you'd spend building that set-up reliably and just buy an E-rod LS3 and make 500hp with a warranty?
This SR will probably be the last Nissan engine I fully build for a while, reliability and consistency is starting to really appeal to me as I get older.

Oh, I wasn't calling them reliable and consistent, they're the opposite, I was saying I'd never build another when compared the the reliability found with LS's or JZ's. The only reason I built my SR was because it was what I had at the time and it's what all the parts I have on my shelves are for.
I built my ka but after this im for sure going 1.5jz or boosted lsx. I only built my ka because of the experience and rather have new built engine reliable @400-450whp vs a used swap at 300whp for the price. Just need my ka-t to get me around for the next year till I get an actual car to daily lol

Well small update, but my roll bar is in and all of the chassis welding should be done for now, next is painting everything. So far I've decided on hammered black for my roll bar and doing raptor liner for the floor to hide imperfections, cut glare, and have a nice texture. No plans to upgrade the MC for z32? What are you doing for rears? Ive got stock all around but will wait for funds to go ctsv fronts and z32 rear. Man where does the time go, between work and every other aspect of life it's been hard finding time for the car. It's odd to finally be a point where time is the hold up and not so much money. Anyways I hope you guys don't mind me updating this with some personal life stuff as well as car progress, I feel like the best build threads are the ones that you get to feel like you're actually learning about the person writing it.
So, as per the car, I started putting the front suspension back together and started putting the five lug components together, I was cheap and just drilled the front hubs on my press and I'm just waiting on my wheel studs at this point, I also am trying to find some time to make the Nismo style power brace.
I also redid my radiator support because I was not happy at all with the first idea that came to mind and rightfully corrected it. It's now held in with two bolts and is made of 3/4" tubing and a bit of flat bar
Previous version which was just some aluminum bar stock bent to shape that I was disappointed in myself for even considering.

Nice work dude. Keep it up!
Thanks for the kind words, and in spirit of keeping up the work I've finished the front suspension and did a rough alignment, I'll get a real one dialed in when I actually have a set of wheels for the front.

I also whipped up a "nismo style" power brace out of some 1-3/4" DOM I had laying around I figure the extra beefiness can't hurt considering I cut my radiator support in favor of of ease of maintenance.

I'm also not sure if I ever shared the new turbo setup, external gate GT28! I wish I had the cash for a vband manifold and housing but hopefully this just plays nice and doesn't come loose.

It's In!
After going to the track/ a few meets Friday night I decided that I miss my car and did some things haha. I invited some friends over to have a engine drop in party.
Everything for the most part went smooth, my tranny had some rust on the input shaft so it fought me, my driveshaft is stuck on my diff due to the nuts being seized on to the studs, and I scratched my firewall due to my tranny vent tube getting stuck in my tranny tunnel but all in all I'm happy. Everything went much easier than the many times I did this by myself before.
Now I just need to buy an ECU, currently leading towards Haltech just because I don't plan on keeping the SR forever and it's easiest to transfer engine to engine. I also need some wheels and the square R33 reps (flame away) are looking good to me as their price is stupid low as I get some good hook ups at Enjuku.
Picture dump!

Well here's another small update, I'm to the phase of building a car that sucks the most, the end is near but every step of the way I'm always needing something, AN fittings, nuts & bolts, fluids, etc. I think everyone who's ever built a car knows this nickle and dime pain and has the constant regret of not leaving everything stock, but hopefully all of the money and hard work pays off, if not I'm never building another car and I'm buying an R6 haha.
Anyways I got some little things done like finally cut my rear interior panels to fit around my roll bar which made me cringe because they we're so nice. Also the holes came out over sized from aggravation and exhaustion, cutting the holes too big sure is a lot easier than getting in and out of the car over and over at 1am.
http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag214/HanzB_/240%20build%20v2/7E8FCD95-B0FF-4312-8CE3-1812A8071E77_zpsjfx5neez.jpg (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/HanzB_/media/240%20build%20v2/7E8FCD95-B0FF-4312-8CE3-1812A8071E77_zpsjfx5neez.jpg.html)
I also started working on my exhaust, which consists of a $100 special Ebay catback, and an ISR test pipe/ down pipe which cost me $60 brand new, damn I love China.
Since I'm running a weird exhaust housing on my GT28 that's also a V-band I have to make my own "J-pipe" though, also since I cut the cat hump out of my car the ISR downpipe flange was pointing straight into my tranny, nothing a cut and twist couldn't fix (I love cutting destroying things I just bought), I also made what will be a very annoying yet effective solid exhaust mount out of the 3/4 tubing and 1/8 flat stock to keep the downpipe in place and stop everything from smacking the floor under my seat. As for the J pipe I have to make it's going to be an expensive little bastard since it's stainless, but I'll need a 2.5-3 cone then a 90 bend and a flex section that's almost $100 for 6 damn inches
Regardless I'm sure it'll be pretty and I'll be happy I made it in stainless, also I don't think my ground clearance will be too bad considering the car will be on 17's rocking functional ride height because the low life sucks.
Anyways photos!

Well race car progress has been slow, just due to the fact that ECU's are expensive and that's the current hold up, in the meantime I did finish my downpipe that took slightly longer than I wanted just because building a custom 3" turbo-back exhaust on your back sucks, you can tell I just wanted to get it done and over with by the fact that I just ended up MIG welding everything rather than playing with the TIG. Photo dump!

So, ta-da a custom 3" turbo-back with a flex section that only hangs a bit below my squished frame rails! I'll eventually get around to getting those stupidly expensive metal zip-ties and more heat wrap for the rest of the downpipe.
Anyways, once I get an ECU it'll be party time and I'll finally get around to doing rowdy things in my S13 again! And since Timehop is hitting me in the feels I'm gonna share some more old pictures of my car!

Well I finally manned up and went 5-lug and ordered some wheels! I'll be replacing my axles while I'm in here since they're trashed and I'll be rebuilding the stock s13 rear brakes because I'm not baller enough for a Z32 rear set-up at the moment and I also hate drum brakes.
Anyways here's some photos of the rear 5 lug hubs courtesy of Zilvia's own killer2001! The fronts are just the DIY redrill method (yes I can feel the flames).

Well I bought another shell today haha. I scored myself a rolling shell with Z32 wheels and tires, Z32 F&R brakes, an uncracked dash, and a whole bunch of SR20 stuff to sell. This shell is going to serve as a missile car since I have too much money in mine to actually comfortably beat on it. Before everyone starts roasting me it has rust so I don't feel bad sending another chassis to damnation, I'll fix whats structural and have something I can enjoy on weekends.
The plans are a carb'd 302/ WC T5 swap, some single stage whatever is in my cabinet paint, cage, and other basic stuff to have a functional 200-300hp track car.

Seeing this reminded me I need to get my shit going. Been out since April so its been about a year :( everything is done but got this lean issue that I can narrow down to actually drive it. I just turned 20, got super corporate job so will be doing 40+ hour week, other life BS, school etc and I feel like im 40 now. Sometimes I forgot I have a 240 since its been so long working on it.

Well my SR car finally runs! If you consider only being able to idle running lol. I got the car to fire up this past week or so and set my base timing. After that I broke the cams in and did an oil change. This SR has to be the smoothest one I've ever built. I had no leaks, no lifter tick, and the damn thing just worked it was amazing.
Unfortunately it hasn't been all good though, I'm fighting a losing battle trying to get my Racepak to work and my brand new LC-2 wideband isn't sending any voltage to my ECU. My alternator also managed to kill itself while sitting on the shelf.
Hopefully I can get that all sorted out since I've been bugging the Megasquirt tech support team non stop and have already had my alternator sent out to be rebuilt.
After that's all sorted all I need to do is buy some rear break calipers and tires and shake this bitch down hopefully, then I can start cutting up and fixing the red car.
(ignore the unwired IAT sensor that's been taken care of I just don't take enough photos when I work lol)

Sorry to continue being vague but it runs and I have some quick video to prove it haha! I also started painting the interior of the car and finalizing the wiring, I'll have a proper update in a couple weeks.
Also my dash isn't displaying any data due to a hardware issue with my ECU that the awesome guys at Megasquirt are fixing for me!
PeYPegUAOkU&feature=youtu.be
Not anytime soon, I only have Z32 fronts, the rears are staying stock for now. If it feels weird then I'll upgrade but for now I'm pretty sure stock will do, if anything I'd got to a boosterless setup.
randomly strolling through here, if you plan to do that grab a JDM S14 brake master cylinder. brake lines will hate you since you'll have to re-bend them but your brake bias will be much better since S14's in japan ran the 4 pots up front with the single pot sliding calper in the back.

randomly strolling through here, if you plan to do that grab a JDM S14 brake master cylinder. brake lines will hate you since you'll have to re-bend them but your brake bias will be much better since S14's in japan ran the 4 pots up front with the single pot sliding calper in the back.
Oh awesome, I never knew that haha. Luckily I have braided brake lines so no annoying re-bending. Thanks for the info!
